    Notes: We analyze the current density-voltage characteristics of double-barrier tunneling diodes, with different spacer layers, within the framework of a Poisson solver together with a coherent tunneling approximation for transmission probabilities. We show that varying the spacer layer thickness, together with barrier heights, changes dramatically the current density-voltage characteristics line shape, which is revealed to be an important qualitative signature of the tunneling paths involved in the double-barrier diodes under operation. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: Differences and similarities in the temporal organization of hormone secretion in plasma reflect the activity of CNS pacemakers. One aspect of this activity, the temporal synchronization of the secretion of different hormones is still poorly understood. We report the analysis of melatonin and testosterone plasma concentrations during two nights in 6 normal healthy young men. Blood was collected every 20 min between 2040 and 0640. Plasma testosterone concentrations increased by 1.5- to 2-fold during the second part of the night, and melatonin by 2.5- to 4-fold. In each subject, the individual temporal pattern of melatonin was quite stable over the two nights of sampling, while testosterone profiles showed fluctuations. There was a high degree of parallelism in these two hormones nocturnal secretion. These results, together with previous studies, suggest that melatonin might entrain the nocturnal secretion of testosterone.

    Notes: Abstract The aggregation of dodecyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (DTAOH) aqueous solutions has been studied by several methods. It is stepwise and four critical points were found. AtC T=(2.51±0.10)×10−4 mol · dm−3 the surface excess becomes zero, atC T=(1.300±0.041)×10−3 mol · dm−3 small aggregates from, which grow with concentration. AtC T=(1.108±0.010)×10−2 mol · dm−3 true micelles form (CMC) and at (3.02±0.28)×10−2 mol · dm−3 the structure of micelles probably changes affecting their properties. The DTAOH micelles are highly ionized (α=0.8) at the CMC, and decreases to reach very small values when the total concentration increases.

    Notes: Abstract The evaporation rate of aerosol OT-water-n-heptane inverse micellar systems was studied. The evaporation behavior of solutions was strongly affected when compared with pure heptane. The changes are related to the structure of the micelles and the properties of the water molecules dissolved in the micelles. The initial rate of evaporation reaches a maximum when the surfactant head groups are hydrated with three water molecules, a minimum when the first hydration shell of Na+ ions is completed, and then rises and stabilizes until the second hydration shell is completed. The presence of free water when the ratio water molecules to surfactant molecules exceeds 12 produces a new rise of the initial evaporation rate, which is always higher than that of puren-heptane.

    Notes: Abstract The diffusion coefficient of disodiumn-decane phosphonate micelles was studied by polarography at 25°C in NaCl and in NaOH solutions, and the size and aggregation number of the micelles was computed as a function of Na+ concentration. All other conditions being equal, the addition of NaCl produces micelles with an aggregation number one order of magnitude larger than the NaOH addition. This is due to the increase of the effective charge per micellized head group produced by the reaction of OH- with the hydrolized head groups which are mainly present as-PO3H- in the micellar Stern layer.
