Notes: Summary A case of retroperitoneal inflammatory fibrous histiocytoma associated to a marked granulocytic blood reaction and high eosinophilic count is reported. The paraneoplastic nature of the haematological findings and their probable prognostic role are discussed. Ultrastructurally the tumor does not differ significantly from “non inflammatory” fibroxanthosarcomas.

Notes: Abstract Dynamical stability of a static axisymmetrical magnetic star with respect to high-order modes of oscillation is investigated by means of the energy method, neglecting the Eulerian perturbation of gravity. The magnetic field is assumed to be continuous across the surface of the star and its first-order spatial derivatives, but it may have both toroidal and poloidal components. The second variation of the potential energy is written in a way which, in the case of apurely toroidal field, and for axisymmetrical and non-axisymmetrical modes, yields Tayler's local stability criteria which are necessary and sufficient conditions for convective stability, and in the case of ageneral field yields a single local stability criterion, which is a sufficient condition for convective stability.

Notes: Abstract A NaI sum-spectrometer combined with Ge-counters has been used to characterize the members of the island of high spin isomers nearN=82. On the basis of half lives, totalγ-decay energies and discreteγ-lines, assignments of 22 isomers are given or confirmed. The isomers are localized to the region 82≦N≦86 andZ≦68, and the excitation energies vary from 3 MeV to 12.2 MeV. An empirical relation between spin and excitation energy is presented and on this basis isomeric spin values up to (33±2)ħ are deduced. The isomers are thought to be due to strong alignment of 2 to 8 shell-model particles in a spherical or possibly weakly oblate potential.

Notes: Abstract In the actinides bothi 13/2 protons andj 15/2 neutrons are close to the Fermi surface. At rapid rotation these high-j particles will unpair and align their orbital angular momentum along the axis of rotation giving rise tos-bands that cross the ground-state band. Coulomb excitation of the odd nuclei 237 93 Np (established up to the 45/2+ state) and 235 92 U (established up to the 51/2− state) provides specific information about these band crossings: From the saturating alignment of the odd high-j particle in both nuclei at intermediate rotational frequencies we find the aligned angular momentum of thei 13/2 protons-band to be 6.6ħ while the corresponding value for thej 15/2 neutrons-band is 5.5ħ. At more rapid rotation above ℏω=0.18 MeV we observe additional alignment in235U. This is ascribed to the interaction of the protons-band. From the gradual onset of the additional alignment we deduce that forZ=92 the protons-band interacts strongly with the ground-state band and from a comparison of the actual amount of alignment with the full value of 6.6ħ we estimate the crossing to occur around ℏgw c p =0.25 MeV.
