Notes: [Auszug] The work to be described concerns only fast neutrons, and its object is the study of their scattering by uranium and the possible neutron emission which accompanies the fission of the nucleus. Tho experiments were performed with a polonium plus beryllium source equivalent to 3mC. of radon ...

Notes: Abstract In the actinides bothi 13/2 protons andj 15/2 neutrons are close to the Fermi surface. At rapid rotation these high-j particles will unpair and align their orbital angular momentum along the axis of rotation giving rise tos-bands that cross the ground-state band. Coulomb excitation of the odd nuclei 237 93 Np (established up to the 45/2+ state) and 235 92 U (established up to the 51/2− state) provides specific information about these band crossings: From the saturating alignment of the odd high-j particle in both nuclei at intermediate rotational frequencies we find the aligned angular momentum of thei 13/2 protons-band to be 6.6ħ while the corresponding value for thej 15/2 neutrons-band is 5.5ħ. At more rapid rotation above ℏω=0.18 MeV we observe additional alignment in235U. This is ascribed to the interaction of the protons-band. From the gradual onset of the additional alignment we deduce that forZ=92 the protons-band interacts strongly with the ground-state band and from a comparison of the actual amount of alignment with the full value of 6.6ħ we estimate the crossing to occur around ℏgw c p =0.25 MeV.

Notes: Abstract The investigation of the odd-neutron nucleus235U and odd-proton nucleus237Np provides the possibility to study separately the alignment effects in thei 13/2 proton andj 15/2 neutron intruder states in the actinides. Using Coulomb excitation with208Pb projectiles we were able to extend the yrast bands up to the 57/2 levels in both cases. The experimental results consistently show — at least in the region of the rotational frequencies studied — the dominant role of thei 13/2 proton alignment, as well as the weakness of the interaction strength of thej 15/2 neutrons-configuration forN=144.

Notes: Abstract The Coulomb excitation measurements for the230Th nucleus with32S,84Kr and142Nd projectiles are presented. The use of different projectiles allowed us to get information in the ground-state band and side bands. The energy spectrum of the ground-state band and of the lowest negative-parity band have been investigated up to the spin valueI=24+ andI=19−(21), respectively. Five side bands (K π=0+, 2 1 + , 2 2 + , 1−, 2−) were observed also. The branching ratios for a large number of transitions in the spin regionI≦10 for π=+1 andI≦9 for π=− 1 are analysed. The full set of experimental data contains information on the mixing of the adiabatic states and on the nuclear response to the electromagnetic field ofγ-radiation. It is shown that the experimental data may be explained taking into account the coupling of the ground-β- and twoγ-bands and also of theK π=0−, 1− and 2− negative-parity bands. An enhancement of the transitions from theγ-to theβ-band in respect to the transitions from theγ to the ground band and from theβ- to the ground band is reported. The mixing of the negative-parity bands is found to be typical for the alignment of the octupole-vibrational angular momentum. The strong spin dependence of the intrinsic matrix elements of the electric-dipole operator follows from the branching ratios of inter- and intra-band transitions from theK π=0− states.
