Notes: A commercial high pressure steam peeler was adapted to accept direct injection of cold water in order to study the effect of rapid cooling under partial vacuum on effectiveness of the peel and on product loss in the peeling of cured sweet potatoes. Tests were: (1) high pressure steam peeling with flash in-chamber cooling by cold water injection; (2) high pressure steam peeling with postdump cooling by spray washing; (3) lye peeling. Cold water injection facilitated trimming and handling and improved appearance. The peeled and trimmed yield of U.S. No. 1 Red Jewel sweet potatoes was 81.1% for steam-peeled roots with flash cooling, 80.3% for lye-peeled sweet potatoes, and 73.7% for steam-peeled roots with wash water cooling.

Notes: A process utilizing the synergistic effects of minimal thermal processing in glass containers, acidification, calcium firming, and refrigerated storage to produce a superior quality canned sliced tomato has been developed. After 6 months of refrigerated storage these canned slices were judged to be equal in quality to peeled and sliced fresh winter-grown tomatoes when used in sandwiches and salads. Microbiological tests proved the efficacy of the process for all storage temperatures, and separately showed the additive preservative effect of each of the process variables.

Notes: The relationship of John to the synoptic gospels has been a recurring problem, not only for two centuries of modern critical scholarship, but for Christian theology and exegesis over a much longer period. To my knowledge a full history of this problem is yet to be written,1 although it might well be helpful in arriving at a solution, as well as illuminating the present situation. The purpose of this paper is not to treat the history or to resolve the problem, but to sketch out and assess its dimensions.

Notes: Abstract A method is described for demonstrating the hypothalamic control of corticosterone in the intact rat. Oxotremorine 0.01–0.05 mg/kg IP and 5-hydroxy-l-tryptophan 1–50 mg/kg IP raise plasma corticosterone levels in dose-related fashion. The oxotremorine response is blocked by atropine 1 mg/kg SC and the 5-hydroxy-l-tryptophan response by mianserin 10 mg/kg IP. α-Methylparatyrosine methyl ester 400 mg/kg IP raises plasma corticosterone levels 14–16 h later. This rise can be suppressed by clonidine 0.01–0.05 mg/kg IP and this suppression is antogonized by piperoxane 5–50 mg/kg IP. Apomorphine 5 mg/kg IP does not lower plasma corticosterone levels in rats pre-treated with α-methylparatyrosine. The response to oxotremorine cannot be blocked by atropine methylbromide or by mianserin. The response to 5-hydroxy-l-tryptophan is unaffected by benserazide or atropine sulphate. These data suggest separate cholinergic and serotoninergic facilitation of corticosterone release in the intact rat. The stimulating drugs used appear to be acting centrally. The data also support the presence of a noradrenergic inhibitory system mediated by α-adrenoceptors. Dopaminergic receptors appear to play no part in the central control of corticosterone secretion after pre-treatment with α-methylparatyrosine.

Notes: Summary Calcification occurring in the basal ganglia in children with acute lymphocytic leukemia following therapy is uncommon and to the best of our knowledge has not been reported prior to therapy. Eleven cases of bilateral symmetrical calcification in the basal ganglia were noted in 2350 CT scans, two being in children with acute lymphocytic leukemia. In one of the two cases, calcification was present prior to therapy.

Notes: Abstract Acetylene reduction (nitrogen fixation) was measured in several vegetational areas in a Delaware, USA salt marsh. Samples were collected for 1 yr and the results showed a seasonally variable pattern of acetylene reduction at all stations. Peak rates were generally recorded during the later summer and early fall (September–October). The seasonality was influenced mainly, although not exclusively, by the soil temperature. In addition, samples collected in short Spartina alterniflora stands exhibited rates which were up to 20-fold higher than those found in samples from tall S. alterniflora stands. Over 50% of the total yearly ethylene production occurred from mid-August until the beginning of December at the tall and short S. alterniflora stations. Maximum activity occurred at 5 cm depth for all stations. Surface activity accounted for only 3–4% of the total measured in the top 20 cm. Addition of glucose or mannitol resulted in considerable increases in activity, thus suggesting that heterotrophic acetylene reduction is carbon and/or energy limited. The results obtained in this study indicate that the measured rates are only potential rates and that considerable caution must be used in extrapolating from acetylene reduction rates to nitrogen fixation rates in situ.

Notes: The contribution of the associated steps to the properties of grain-boundary dislocations are investigated. Two methods of step-height determination are given and it is shown that the step height, like the Burgers vector, must be conserved during the reactions of grain-boundary dislocations: this is not always automatic and additional coherent steps must take part in some reactions. The energies associated with steps have been estimated and compared with the elastic energies of grain-boundary dislocations; these comparisons suggest that (a) the reduction of elastic energy alone may not be a sufficient criterion for the progress of a reaction and (b) that arrays of dislocations may reduce their energy by containing dislocations embodying steps of varying height.
