Notes: Summary. Plasma progesterone levels were measured in three groups of untreated women. (1) Nine women with follicle rupture, proved by laparotomy or laparoscopy, had values of ≥40 nmol/l on days 18–24 (days −10—5 from the next period); thus a value of 〈40 nmol/1 should not be taken as evidence of ovulation. (2) Nineteen healthy women with normal menstrual histories had hormone assays on alternate days during one cycle. In five of them all values were 〈38 nmol/1. (3) Forty women had a single progesterone assay on days 20–29 of a conceptual cycle. Eight of them had a level 〈40 nmol/l. Ovulation had certainly occurred in all of them, but it is difficult to assess whether the sample timing was optimal since there was no following menstrual period. Progesterone levels in drug-induced conceptual cycles were in general higher than those in spontaneous pregnancy cycles. Women with luteinization of the unruptured follicle frequently had values of 〉40 nmol/l. Conversely, a secretory endometrium was not uncommon in cycles with values of 〈38 nmol/l.

Notes: The case is described of a 20 year old pregnant woman with clear cell adenocarcinoma of the vagina who had been exposed to diethyl stilboestrol in utero. This is the second of three cases known to have occurred in Britain. The importance of radical treatment is discussed. Neither cervical nor vaginal intra-epithelial neoplasia were seen histologically, although squamous metaplasia was widespread, and in some areas was immature and showed atypical features which could be misinterpreted as intra-epithelial neoplasia. An area of atypical adenosis was noticed, a hitherto rarely observed feature.

Notes: Abstract— Acetylcholine synthesis in homogenates of human intercostal muscle was measured by a radiochemical method. Choline acetyltransferase activity in control muscle was about 20 nmol.g−1.h−1. The enzyme was found only in the endplate area of the muscle. At high substrate concentrations its activity was overshadowed by the acetylcholine synthesizing activity of a different enzyme not saturated by 10 mm-choline. The nonspecific enzyme was present at and away from the endplate area. Choline acetyltransferase in parasternal samples of intercostal muscle from myasthenia gravis patients was about 2.5 times higher than in samples, taken from a more lateral location, of control patients, but the Km for choline was not altered (0.24 mm). It is suggested that in myasthenia gravis the shortage of acetylcholine receptors is partially compensated for by increased synthesis, storage, and release of the transmitter.

Notes: American eels, Anguilla rostrata, obtained from an aquaculture facility in South Carolina were examined for diseases and bacterial pathogens were isolated and identified. During the first year of culture, only a small number of bacterial pathogens and diseases were detected in glass and elver stages. This observation appears to be associated with a natural immunity to disease and/or administering the antibacterial compound, nitrofurazone. There was also a positive correlation between the use of nitrofurazone and the isolation of nitrofurazone resistant strains of Aeromonas hydrophila. A higher incidence of bacterial pathogens and/or disease occurred during the process of culling and in older eels during warmer months. The primary aetiological agent of disease of cultured eels was A. hydrophila. Other potential pathogens isolated included A. salmonicida, Vibrio spp. and Pseudomonas spp.

Notes: Summary Artificial cryoprecipitates have been prepared from SLE sera by incubation of anti-double stranded DNA with 3H-PM2 DNA, IgM rheumatoid factor, and complement to study further the relationships between natural cryoprecipitation and the DNA/anti-DNA system in this disorder. Addition of rheumatoid factor and/or complement to a mixture of SLE serum and 3H-DNA results in increased precipitation of the 3H-DNA following incubation at 4 °C. Precipitations formed with added complement or complement plus rheumatoid factor could be rapidly resolubilized or reprecipitated by warming to 37 °C or recooling to 4 °C, i.e., exhibited the behavior of natural cryoprecipitates. The resolubilized cryoprecipitates contained excess antibody, because they bound significant quantities of additional 3H-DNA in the Farr assay. Of special interest was the observation that DNA binding activity frequently could be recovered from resolubilized cryoprecipitates even though 3H-DNA was not added during the original cryoprecipitate preparation. With certain cryoprecipitations prepared in this way, the DNA binding activity was further increased by deoxyribonuclease treatment, raising the possibility that endogenous DNA may be a constituent of such cryoprecipitates. The implications of these findings with respect to the nature of antibody-DNA immune complexes in SLE are discussed.

Notes: Abstract We compare coronal holes observed in solar soft X-ray images obtained with rocket-borne telescopes during 1974 to 1981 with holes observed on nearly simultaneous 10830 Å maps. Hole boundaries are frequently poorly defined, and after 1974 the brightness contrast between the large scale structure and holes appears substantially diminished in both X-rays and 10830 Å. We find good agreement between soft X-rays and 10830 Å for large area holes but poor agreement for mid and low latitude small area holes, which are generally of low contrast. These results appear inconsistent with the popular view that the quiet corona is sharply separated into open magnetic field regions consisting of coronal holes and closed field regions consisting of the large scale structure.
