    Notes: Abstract An Antarctic psychrophilic marine Vibrio species was isolated having the inducible ability to accumulate nonmetabolizable thiomethyl-14C-β-galactopyranoside (14C-TMG) through a galactose permease system. Induction of 14C-TMG uptake was found to have a salinity requirement which was higher than that required for uptake. At the optimum salinity, galactose and fucose were the primary inducers. Lactose produced a comparable induction but only at higher concentrations, whereas glucose did not cause induction. The initial rate of 14C-TMG uptake exhibited saturation kinetics with an apparent Km value of 4.8 x 10−6M. An amino acid, in addition to the inducer, was required for induction which could not be replaced by glycerol or galactose. Evidence is presented which indicates that the uptake of 14C-TMG is energy-dependent and that nutrient availability is more important than salinity for induction and uptake under conditions which would normally be found in the oceanic environment.

    Notes: American eels, Anguilla rostrata, obtained from an aquaculture facility in South Carolina were examined for diseases and bacterial pathogens were isolated and identified. During the first year of culture, only a small number of bacterial pathogens and diseases were detected in glass and elver stages. This observation appears to be associated with a natural immunity to disease and/or administering the antibacterial compound, nitrofurazone. There was also a positive correlation between the use of nitrofurazone and the isolation of nitrofurazone resistant strains of Aeromonas hydrophila. A higher incidence of bacterial pathogens and/or disease occurred during the process of culling and in older eels during warmer months. The primary aetiological agent of disease of cultured eels was A. hydrophila. Other potential pathogens isolated included A. salmonicida, Vibrio spp. and Pseudomonas spp.

    Notes: Abstract. Extracts of the tunicate Ecteinascidia turbinate were used in preventing Aeromono hydrophila infection in the American eel, Anguilla rostrata. Intraperitoneal injection of the extract 2 days after bacterial challenge was shown to increase dramatically eel phagocytic activity and resistance to disease. Intravenous injection of the extract 2 days post-bacterial injection was shown to increase antibody titres. This study helps to substantiate the possible use of E. turbinata extract in treating eel diseases. The exact nature of its protective effect will be dependent on the time and route of its delivery.

    Notes: Diseased American eels, Anguilla rostrata, were collected from an eel culture facility in South Carolina and examined. The disease was characterized by skin lesions located on the body. A bacterium identified as Aeromonas salmonicida was isolated from the lesions and shown to be the causative agent. The bacterium was also isolated from the kidney during later stages of the disease.
