Notes: Abstract A series of discharge experiments were performed from the PbO2/O2 region to various reduction potentials using the potential step technique. Two distinct potential ranges were observed, one which occurs at potentials between 1050 and 1100 mV and the second, where there was a much larger output of capacity between 400 and 700 mV. Between these two regions there is a plateau where the relatively small output in capacity during discharge experiments enables almost complete recharging to be effected. The data presented here shows that once the electrode has entered the second reduction region it is virtually impossible to recharge the electrode using this experimental technique.

Notes: Abstract Linear sweep experiments on Pb in H2SO4 at concentrations in excess of 5 mol dm−3 have been conducted using computer controlled techniques. Measurements have indicated that the maximum charge in the PbO2 reduction peak occurs at 5 mol dm−3, the available capacity decreasing with the concentration of H2SO4.

Description / Table of Contents: Preparation and Crystal Structure of ZrP2S6 and ThP2S6The compounds ZrP2S6 (I) and ThP2S6 (II) are synthesized from the elements at 750-800°C. They are isotypic (P42/m, Z = 2; I: a = 668.2, c = 948.9 pm; II: a = 688.0, c = 990.3 pm) and to be described as M4+(P2S6)4-. The thiohypodiphosphate anion has ideal staggered conformation. The cation is coordinated by a (slightly deformed) 42m dodecahedron of S atoms. The geometrical details correspond to the most favourable ligand distribution.

Description / Table of Contents: Crystal Structure of NaAlCl4 · 1.5 SO2A single crystal of the title compound could be prepared by means of a micro bridgman technique. The crystal (melting point -8°C) was measured on a four circle diffractometer at -25°C. NaAlCl4 · 1.5 SO2 crystallizes monoclinically in the space group P 21/n (No. 14) with a = 3159.8(33), b = 1004.6(11), c = 637.0(8) pm and β = 93.39(9)°. The main features of this novel structure type are AlCl4 tetrahedra and NaO2Cl4 as well as NaO3Cl3 octahedra. Two non-equivalent polyhedra of each type occur in the asymmetric unit. Tetrahedra are sharing chlorine atoms with octahedra and octahedra are linked mutually by SO2-bridges. Bond distances and their correlations to the conformation are discussed.
