Notes: Summary The agonistic and antagonistic effects of the new compound SCH 23390 were tested in functional model systems for the D-1 dopamine receptor and for the D-2 dopamine receptor in vitro. In superfused rat neostriatal slices the increase in the efflux of cyclic AMP was used as a parameter for D-1 receptor stimulation. D-2 receptor stimulation was measured as the decrease in the K+-evoked release of [3H]-acetylcholine. SCH 23390 had no agonistic activity in these two models. SCH 23390 was a potent antagonist of the stimulating effect of dopamine in the D-1 receptor model (apparent pA2=7.28). SCH 23390 also antagonized the effect of the D-2 receptor agonist LY 141865 in the D-2 receptor model (apparent pA2=6.34). This D-2 receptor antagonism proved to be of a competitive nature.

Notes: Abstract Experimental values of the differential cross section for the reactionn+d→π 0+t at large angles (θ≳50°) in the neutron energy range 460–560 MeV and the known values of the coupling constants $$G_{nn\pi ^O }^2 $$ andG tdn 2 are used to predictdσ/dΩ at smaller angles. The method is based on the use of general analytic properties of the differential cross section in the cosgq-plane.

Notes: Abstract This paper briefly reviews the changes which have occurred in the past three hundred years in the public's attitudes toward our Nation's natural resources, particularly the wildlife resources. It discusses how these changing attitudes have contributed to today's surface coal mine reclamation laws which require that the disturbed land be restored to a level of productivity equal to or greater than that which occurred before mining. This paper stresses the need to manage each reclamation site on an ecosystem basis, recognizing the interrelationships of all the resource components. This paper emphasizes both the fundamental importance of the holistic approach to mine site reclamation and the responsibility that the wildlife biologist has to see to it that wildlife habitat considerations are incorporated into each phase of the reclamation plan. Brief management considerations are given to three unique reclamation habitat types; riparian, agriculture and forest.

Notes: Abstract In view of the lack of information concerning the commercial availability in Europe of biopreparations (based on microorganisms including viruses) as well as of beneficial metazoa for biological control of pest organisms, an inquiry was started for the following countries: France, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, Rumania, Yugoslavia, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Finland and Germany Fed. Rep. Results are presented as a momentary picture of the situation in early 1984. A plead is made for the acceptance of an European protocol for registration of biopreparations (which has already been drafted) in order to save money and time. There are great differences between countries in the availability of biotic agents for biological control. Some very promising new developments are briefly reviewed and considered to act in a stimulating way. Thanks are due to those colleagues who helped to obtain the information here presented.

Notes: Abstract A visit to Northern China's forests on behalf of the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) gave us the opportunity to report on some impressions. After a short description of the forestry situation overthere, a survey is given on the most important pest insects, vertebrates, and forest diseases, based on personal observations as well as on Chinese reports. Defense measures for forest protection include mainly chemical control, also silvicultural control, and recently more and more biological methods. In the report on the use of beneficial organisms, main emphasis is placed on the utilization ofTrichogramma dendrolimi to suppress the pine caterpillar (Dendrolimus spp.), the experimental use of two hymenopterous parasites,Scleroderma sp. andSchreineria sp., against the poplar borer (Saperda populnea) as well as the colonization of insectivorous birds and of weasels to suppress voles. It is also reported on the microbial control of pest insects using insect pathogenic viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Finally, some research projects on the use of antagonists against phytopathogens are mentioned.
