Abstract To characterize the behavior of the thermodynamic properties of systems near a critical point, systems are grouped into universality classes. Systems within a universality class have the same universal critical exponents and scaling functions. Specifically, fluids are expected to belong to the universality class of three-dimensional Ising-like systems for which the universal quantities have been calculated with considerable accuracy. A scaled fundamental equation is presented which incorporates these theoretical predictions. Results obtained for various technologically important fluids, namely ordinary steam, heavy steam, ethylene, and isobutane, are discussed.
