    Notes: We have repeated and extended turbidity measurements on a new sample of the ionic mixture triethyl n-hexyl ammonium triethyl n-hexyl boride (N2226B2226) in diphenyl ether in a temperature range above its consolute point. Previous measurements on this system by some of us indicated mean-field critical behavior over the range of reduced temperatures 10−4〈t〈10−1. Our new measurements do not reproduce those reported before. The transmission of the new sample is substantially lower, and the turbidities up to a factor of 3 higher than those of the sample used in the previous work. The correlation-length amplitude is approximately 40% larger than that found for the previous sample. Unlike the earlier results, the new data do not display a substantial range of mean-field critical behavior. In our investigation of this irreproducibility, we have carefully reviewed the earlier experiment, and we report here an effect not previously noted: a time dependence of the turbidity of the earlier sample. It is likely that the discrepancy is due to impurity effects, but we do not understand their origin. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report turbidity, light scattering, and coexistence curve data for a solution of triethyl n-hexyl ammonium triethyl n-hexyl borate in diphenylether. We recently reported that the present sample shows much higher turbidity than that of K. S. Zhang, M. E. Briggs, R. W. Gammon, and J. M. H. Levelt Sengers [J. Chem. Phys. 109, 4533 (1998)] for an earlier sample. An analysis of the data shows that nonclassical critical behavior is favored in the reduced temperature range from 10−5 to 10−2. At fixed reduced temperature, the correlation length is about twice as large as that of the previous sample. The correlation length amplitude calculated from the fit is 1.4 nm±0.1 nm. A detailed data analysis points out the limitations of turbidity measurements far away from the critical point. The intensity of scattered light was measured at 90°. Multiple scattering is relevant in the wider vicinity of the critical point and was corrected for by a Monte Carlo simulation method. An Ising-type exponent for the correlation length was obtained: ν=0.641±0.003, and the amplitude of the correlation length ξ0=1.34 nm±0.01 nm agrees with that of the turbidity experiment. Mean-field behavior can be ruled out. The refractive indices of coexisting phases were measured in the reduced temperature range from t=10−4 to 0.04. These measurements disagree with results reported by R. R. Singh and K. S. Pitzer [J. Chem. Phys. 92, 6775 (1990)]. The present data lead to an exponent β=0.34±0.01, close to the Ising value. The coexistence curve is much narrower than that of Singh and Pitzer. Crossover could not be detected in any of the experiments. Two-scale-factor universality could be confirmed for this and another ionic system within the experimental uncertainty. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report turbidity measurements of a nonaqueous ionic solution of triethyl n-hexylammonium triethyl n-hexylboride in diphenyl ether. A classical susceptibility critical exponent γ=1.01±0.01 is obtained over the reduced temperature range 10−4≤ t≤10−1. The best fits of the sample transmission had a standard deviation of 0.39% over this range. Ising and spherical model critical exponents are firmly excluded. The correlation length amplitude ξ0 from fitting is 1.0±0.2 nm which is much larger than values found in neutral fluids and some aqueous binary mixtures.

    Notes: A manually operated Burnett apparatus has been converted into a semiautomated Burnett–isochoric PVT facility. An automated pressure injector with dedicated control logic nulls a sensitive differential pressure indicator. A microcomputer is used in setting the control temperature, monitoring equilibration, measuring temperature and pressure, processing the raw data, and storing the information. The quality of the apparatus is demonstrated by means of a low-density and a high-density isochore obtained for a geothermal working fluid mixture in one-phase, two-phase, and supercritical regimes, including a dew and a bubble point.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes some of the experimental and theoretical problems encountered when the Taylor dispersion method is applied to the measurement of diffusion coefficients near gas-liquid critical points. We have used our own measurements of diffusion of benzene and toluene in supercritical carbon dioxide, along with measurements from several other sources, to illustrate some of the experimental challenges. Special attention is given to the peak shape. The intercomparisons are greatly simplified by comparing the experimental data as functions of density, rather than pressure. We find large and unexplained discrepancies between the various experimental sources. We discuss the theoretical predictions for the relationships between the diffusion coefficients and diffusivities obtained from Taylor dispersion and dynamic light scattering in fluids near critical points. We conclude that there is no strong reason to press for Taylor dispersion measurements near the gas-liquid critical point of the carrier gas.

    Notes: Abstract Needs exist for thermophysical data on aqueous solutions at high temperatures and pressures in many different areas of science and engineering. These needs are reviewed and references are given to recent relevant conference proceedings, reviews, and papers. Aspects and drawbacks are discussed of current methods, which are most often extensions to high temperatures of methods developed for liquid water. The challenges posed by engineering needs and by new phenomena resulting from experimental breakthroughs are discussed. Some examples are given of alternative approaches more suitable for highly compressible media.
