Notizen: Abstract A theoretical model was introduced for the evaluation of the boundary layer developed between the main phases during the preparation of unidirectional fiber composites. It has been shown that this thin layer influences considerably the physical properties of the composite. It was assumed that the physical properties of themesophase unfold from those of the hard-core fibers to those of the softer matrix. Thus, a multicylinder model was assumed improving the classical two-cylinder model introduced by Hashin and Rosen for the representative volume element of the composite. Based on thermodynamic phenomena appearing at the glass transition temperatures of the composite and concerning the positions and the sizes of the heat-capacity jumps there, as well as on the experimental values of the longitudinal elastic modulus of the composite, the extent of the mesophase and the mechanical properties of the composite may be accurately evaluated. This version of the model is based on a previous one concerning a multilayer model, but it is considerably improved in order to take into consideration, in a realistic manner, the physical phenomena developed in fiber reinforced composites.

Notizen: Abstract The mechanical and optical properties of polyimides were studied in this paper and the influence of the variation of the reaction temperature on the physico-chemical properties of the polymers was evaluated. From this the dependence of the stress-strain diagrams on the reaction temperature, as well as the stresses and strains at fracture were experimentally determined. Moreover, the elastic moduli and Poisson's ratios, as well as the refractive index of the polymers were evaluated for different temperatures of imidization. In order to define also the behaviour of the polymers as thin membranes at fracture, simple tension tests with edge-cracked thin strips were executed up to fracture. The method of caustics was used, with the specimens loaded inK I mode of deformation at different stress-levels to evaluate the stress intensity factors of the materials in the non-linear zone of loading. TheK I -factor was evaluated by applying the simple Dugdale-Barenblatt model for the ductile materials, whereas for brittle samples the elastic theory was used. Interesting results concerning the physico-mechanical properties of the polyimides were derived.

Notizen: Summary The plane problem of two dissimilar materials, bonded together and containing a crack along their common interface, which were subjected to a biaxial load at infinity, is examined by giving a closed-form expression for the first stress invariant of the normal stresses, which is equally valid everywhere, near to, and far from, the crack-tip region. This exact expression for the first-stress invariant is compared by constructing the respective isopachic-fringe patterns, to the approximate expression with non-singular terms, due to the biaxiality factor, for the same quantity. Significant differences between respective isopachic-patterns were found and their dependence on the elastic properties of both materials and the applied loads was demonstrated. The relative errors between the computedK I - andK II -components by using the approximate expression for the first stress-invariant and the accurate one, derived from closed-form solution along either isopachic-fringes or along circles and radii from the crack-tip have been given, indicating in some cases large discrepancies between exact and approximate solutions.

Notizen: A method which combines the finite element technique and the singular-integral equation method is presented. The association of the two methods is obtained with the help of Schwarz's alternating method (SAM). The method was applied with satisfactory results to the solution of a series of problems of a circular arc crack lying inside a finite thin plate for various lengths of the circular arc and for various dimensions of the rectangular cracked sheet.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper, the method of reflected caustics—which was used to evaluate Mode III SIF's in stationary cracks in isotropic plates—was extended to deal with stationary cracks in orthotropic plates. Furthermore, a correspondence between the anisotropic stationary case and the case of a Mode III dynamic crack, traversing an isotropic plate, is developed by analyzing appropriately the governing equations of the two problems. For this purpose the singulardisplacement field for rectilinearly orthotropic cracked bodies was combined with either Yoffé's model for steady-state, or Broberg's model for transient-crack propagation. Graphs are given where the equivalence between these cases can be established. In this way, the dynamic problem of the propagating crack in an isotropic medium can be readily simulated by considering the experimentally easier anisotropic stationary case.

Notizen: The static and dynamic elastic moduli of particulate composites, consisting of two phases, one of which has isotropic-elastic and the other linear viscoelastic properties, were studied. For this purpose a model defining the approximate equations for determining the elastic modulus of a composite from the properties of the constituent materials was used. Classical theory of elasticity was applied to this simplified model of a composite-unit cell. The following assumptions are made: (i) filler particles are spherical; (ii) fillers are completely dispersed; and (iii) the volume fraction of fillers is sufficiently small, so that any interaction among fillers may be neglected. A class of iron-filled epoxy composites was subjected to tests in order to compare the theoretical values with the experimental results. The elastic modulus calculated by the expression derived in this study seems to corroborate with the experimental results fairly well. Finally, by applying the correspondence principle to this expression, theoretical relationships for the dynamic storage and loss moduli were also derived.
