Notes: The current-voltage characteristics for Schottky barrier diodes with series resistance are discussed. It is shown that by using Norde's function F(V)=V/2−(kT/q)ln(I/SAT2) at two different temperatures, barrier height, n-value or ideality factor, and series resistance can be determined even in the case 1〈n〈2.

Notes: The transverse magnetoresistance of a DyNi single crystal was measured at a temperature of 4.2 K over the magnetic field range 0–100 kOe. It was found that a negative magnetoresistance was observed with a spin flopping of the magnetization along the c axis when the magnetic field was applied along the c axis and the current was parallel to the b axis. On the other hand, the negative magnetoresistance was not observed when the current was parallel to the a axis, and the magnetoresistance increased monotonically with increasing magnetic induction B. Information was also obtained about features of the Fermi surface from the field dependence of the magnetoresistance. It was inferred from the present results that there are open orbits along the a axis and the c axis.

Notes: Summary Psammoma bodies at the perivascular area in five cases of meningioma were examined with the electron microscope. In general, meningocytic cells invest the outer aspect of blood vessels, which are constituted by multilayered basal laminae, collagen fibers, microfibrils, and pericytes. Remnants of degenerated cells are observed in some areas of the perivascular space. Matrix vesicles and matrix giant bodies with or without mineralized deposits are also present in those areas. Energy disperisve, X-ray microanalysis evidenced the presence of both calcium and phosphorus (probably hydroxyapatite) mineralized precipitates. Production of psammoma bodies in the perivascular area may indicate that matrix vesicles and matrix giant bodies are derived from degenerated cells, which then sequestrate hydroxyapatite crystals to form psammoma bodies.

Notes: Summary Three cytopathic rotavirus strains were isolated in MA104 cells from intestinal contents of lambs with diarrhea. Pretreatment of virus with pancreatin and incorporation of a small amount of pancreatin in maintenance medium were important for establishment of the strains in these cells. The isolates showed marked cross reactions with bovine rotavirus in immunofluorescence, but no cross reaction with bovine, human, simian, equine, porcine and lapine rotaviruses in neutralization.

Notes: A new method for solid-state ethanol fermentation (the SSEF system) was experimented on for the ethanol production from solid starchy materials, where a packedbed-type fermentor was used. Both cultivation of Aspergillus saitoi and enrichment of a saccharifying enzyme were effective for hydrolysis of the starch. Ethanol production was set in by a form of parallel fermentation using a respiration-deficient mutant of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Produced ethanol was simultaneously stripped by circulating inert gas and separated in a condenser. Average ethanol concentration in the condensate was over 200 g/L, and over 90% of produced ethanol was recovered from the packed bed during 15 or 16 days of stripping. The fermentation efficiency was about 80%, which was evaluated much higher than those of conventional solid-state fermentations. The residue had lesser volume and a higher solids content compared with the distillery wastewaters of conventional liquid-state fermentations. This means an advantage for the treatment and the effective conversion of the residue into fetilizers or animal feeds.
