    Notes: Abstract A biochemical model of C 3photosynthesis has been developed by G.D. Farquhar et al. (1980, Planta 149, 78–90) based on Michaelis-Menten kinetics of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylase-oxygenase, with a potential RuBP limitation imposed via the Calvin cycle and rates of electron transport. The model presented here is slightly modified so that parameters may be estimated from whole-leaf gas-exchange measurements. Carbon-dioxide response curves of net photosynthesis obtained using soybean plants (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) at four partial pressures of oxygen and five leaf temperatures are presented, and a method for estimating the kinetic parameters of RuBP carboxylase-oxygenase, as manifested in vivo, is discussed. The kinetic parameters so obtained compare well with kinetic parameters obtained in vitro, and the model fits to the measured data give r 2values ranging from 0.87 to 0.98. In addition, equations developed by J.D. Tenhunen et al. (1976, Oecologia 26, 89–100, 101–109) to describe the light and temperature responses of measured CO2-saturated photosynthetic rates are applied to data collected on soybean. Combining these equations with those describing the kinetics of RuBP carboxylase-oxygenase allows one to model successfully the interactive effects of incident irradiance, leaf temperature, CO2 and O2 on whole-leaf photosynthesis. This analytical model may become a useful tool for plant ecologists interested in comparing photosynthetic responses of different C3 plants or of a single species grown in contrasting environments.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of temperature on photosynthesis at constant water-vapor pressure in the air was investigated using two sclerophyll species, Arbutus unedo and Quercus suber, and one mesophytic species, Spinacia oleracea. Photosynthesis and transpiration were measured over a range of temperatures, 20–39° C. The external concentration of CO2 was varied from 340 μbar to near CO2 compensation. The initial slope (carboxylation efficiency, CE) of the photosynthetic response to intercellular CO2 concentration, the CO2 compensation point (Γ), and the extrapolated rate of CO2 released into CO2-free air (R i) were calculated. At an external CO2 concentration of 320–340 μbar CO2, photosynthesis decreased with temperature in all species. The effect of temperature on Γ was similar in all species. While CE in S. oleracea changed little with temperature, CE decreased by 50% in Q. suber as temperature increased from 25 to 34° C. Arbutus unedo also exhibited a decrease in CE at higher temperatures but not as marked as Q. suber. The absolut value of R i increased with temperature in S. oleracea, while changing little or decreasing in the sclerophylls. Variations in Γ and R i of the sclerophyll species are not consistent with greater increase of respiration with temperature in the light in these species compared with S. oleracea.

    Notes: Abstract Molecular computer graphics (MCG) has become the indispensable complement of experimental chemical and biological tools and, in a way, will shape the evolution of these fields. This accelerated and popularized evolution takes root in the visual, even scenic, grasping of fundamental chemical concepts, perceived as veritable ideograms, which condense a vast amount of information with a few two- or threedimensional graphic symbols. With MCG one can carry out real computerized syntheses of chemical images. MCG is also an ideal tool through which to visualize the changes of a system as a function of time. This review article describes the potentials and advantages of structural MCG for visualizing the basic steps of important modelization concepts, particularly for handling on-line structures in information networks and in computer-assisted drug design (CADD) applications.

    Notes: Summary The isolated perfused rat brain was used to demonstrate an effect of gallopamil on energy metabolism affected by ischemia. After a perfusion period of 30 min and 10 min of ischemia the isolated brain preparation was reperfused. From the onset of perfusion onwards, gallopamil (1 or 10 μmol/l) was present in the medium. The higher concentration of gallopamil accelerated significantly the restoration of the high-energy phosphates in the recovery stage: after 2 min of recirculation the ATP and the creatine-P levels were higher and the AMP level was lower in cortical tissue of drug-treated brains than in untreated controls. These results suggest that gallopamil protected brain energy metabolism against ischemic damage.

    Notes: Abstract In the field, photosynthesis of Acer saccharum seedlings was rarely light saturated, even though light saturation occurs at about 100 μmol quanta m-2 s-1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). PPFD during more than 75% of the daylight period was 50 μmol m-2 s-1 or less. At these low PPFD's there is a marked interaction of PPFD with the initial slope (CE) of the CO2 response. At PPFD-saturation CE was 0.018 μmol m-2 s-1/(μl/l). The apparent quantum efficiency (incident PPFD) at saturating CO2 was 0.05–0.08 mol/mol. $${\text{CO}}_{2^ - }$$ and PPFD-saturated CO2 exchange was 6–8 μmol m-2 s-1. The ratio of internal CO2 concentration to external (C i /C a ) was 0.7 to 0.8 except during sunflecks when it decreased to 0.5. The decrease in C i /C a during sunflecks was the result of the slow response of stomates to increased PPFD compared to the response of net photosynthesis. An empirical model, which included the above parameters was used to simulate the measured CO2 exchange rate for portions of two days. Parameter values for the model were determined in experiments separate from the daily time courses being sumulated. Analysis of the field data, partly through the use of simulations, indicate that the elimination of sunflecks would reduce net carbon gain by 5–10%.

    Notes: Abstract Photoluminescence is studied in silicon, deformed in a well-defined and reproducible way. Usual deformation conditions (high temperature, low stress) result in sharp spectra of the D1 through D4 lines as recently described in the literature. New lines D5 and D6 emerge for predeformation as above and subsequent low-temperature, high-stress deformation. Another new sharp line, D12, is observed when both the familiar and the novel lines appear simultaneously. Annealing for 1 h atT A≳ 300 °C causes all new lines to disappear and the D1–D4 spectra to reappear. Quantitative annealing and TEM micrographs suggest that D5 is related to straight dislocations and D6 to stacking faults, whereas D1–D4 are due to relaxed dislocations. Photoluminescence under uniaxial stress shows that D1/D2 originate in tetragonal defects with random orientation relative to 〈100〉 directions, whereas D6 stems from triclinic centers, preferentially oriented — as are the D3/D4 centers. We conclude that the D3/D4 and the D5 and D6 defects are closely related, whereas the independent D1/D2 centers might be deformation-produced point defects in the strain region of dislocations.

    Notes: Abstract The supraspinal control of colonic motility and anorectal motility is poorly documented. We had the opportunity to study colonic function, esophageal function, and urinary bladder function in three patients who presented with vascular lesions limited to the anterior (case 1) or the posterior area (cases 2 and 3) of the pons. Esophageal manometry, urodynamic examination, whole and segmental transit time measurements (using radiopaque markers) and anorectal motility were systematically performed. The results were the following: (1) in the first case esophageal motility was not altered, whereas abnormal micturition, right colonic inertia, and absence of rectoanal inhibitor reflex were observed; (2) in cases 2 and 3, there was a poor esophageal coordination, the micturition and rectoanal inhibitor reflex were normal, and the transit time of the left colon was increased. Our observations are consistent with the previously described localization of neurological areas controlling swallowing and micturition; they also favor the pons as the possible level of supraspinal control of colonic and anorectal motility.

    Notes: Abstract A quantitative study of the life cycle ofSkrjabingylus nasicola was made. Before estimating the losses at each level of the cycle, we needed to know the location of the infectious larval stage in the paratenic host. We found that a significant number of L3 encapsulate in the anterior part of the paratenic host. The cephalic glandular zones, salivary and lacrymal glands, and maybe the musculature and connective tissues ofApodemus sp. andClethrionomys glareolus are preferred waiting regions. Of the 100 L1 placed in contact with the intermediate host,Agriolimax reticulatus, about 24 reach the infectious stage in the mollusc, and a little more than six become adults in the definitive host. These are relatively large losses, if one considers that the conditions of host-parasite encounter were optimal.
