    Notes: Abstract Polyacetylene films, contacted with platinum mesh, have been polarized anodically in aqueous H2SO4, HClO4, HBF4 and H2F2 of medium concentrations (30–70 wt%). Two oxidation peaks are observed, the equivalents of which are 1 $${\text{(1) 0}}{\text{.045 F mol}}^{ - {\text{1}}} {\text{ CH (2) 0}}{\text{.23 F mol}}^{ - {\text{1}}} {\text{ CH}}$$ The potential of the Process 1 decreases linearly with increasing acid concentration by 20–40 mV mol−1 dm−3, while the potential of Peak 2 exhibits normal Nernst behaviour (about + 60 mV decade−1. Process 1 is partially reversible, while Process 2 is totally irreversible. From these findings for Process 1 we conclude the reversible insertion of anions into the polyacetylene host lattice, which is primarily oxidized to the polyradical cation, with the co-insertion of acid molecules HA to yield the insertion compound [(CH)+·yA−·vyHA] x y⩽4.5% andv=1.5 for H2SO4 and HClO4. In the course of Process 2, the polymer is irreversibly oxidized according to $$( - ^ \cdot {\text{CH}} \cdot \cdot \cdot \cdot \cdot \cdot \cdot \cdot ^ \oplus {\text{ CH}} - )_{x/2} + 2{\text{H}}_{\text{2}} {\text{O}} \to ( - \mathop {\text{C}}\limits_{\mathop \parallel \limits_{\text{O}} } \cdot \cdot \cdot \cdot \cdot \cdot \cdot \cdot \mathop {\text{C}}\limits_{\mathop \parallel \limits_{\text{O}} } - )_{x/2} + 6{\text{H}}^{\text{ + }} + 5e^ - $$ As this process occurs to some extent even in the potential region of Process 1, a continuous degradation of the host lattice occurs upon cycling.

Notes: Abstract We study the effects of ground state tensor correlations with a phenomenological two body correlation function on the spin-isospin modes of excitations in nuclei. The correlation function is of Jastrow type with a tensor term. The energy weighted strength is drastically enhanced because of these correlations. We predict considerable amount of strength in the region of 60–70 MeV excitations if the sum is evaluated in a two-state model. Our results are also sensitively dependent on the strength of the tensor term in the phenomenological Jastrow function.

Notes: Summary In order to investigate further the relationship between maternal diabetes and fetal malformation, rat embryos were grown in vitro in the presence of β-hydroxybutyrate, one of the ketone bodies produced by diabetics. At 10 mM, β-hydroxybutyrate produced minor abnormalities and at 20 mM it produced major abnormalities in rat embryos.

Notes: Abstract It has previously been shown that during mannitol-saline volume expansion (VE) Na transport was inhibited 50% by harvested proximal tubular fluid without a change in paracellular shunt pathway permeability to Na. To determine whether this inhibition was due to changes in cellular entry step or an effect on the pump itself, intracellular element concentrations were measured by electron microprobe X-ray ranalysis in proximal tubular cells of control (non-expanded, NE) and VE rats. Na i , Cl i and phosphorus i were increased (mean±S.E.) from 19.3±0.8 to 23.4±0.6, 15.8±0.4 to 21.3±0.4 and 124.3±2.6 to 138.0±1.8 mmol · kg−1 wet weight (P〈0.001) respectively while K i remained unchanged: 122.9±2.2 and 124.2±1.3 mmol · kg−1 wet weight. The increases in Na i and Cl i were in excess of cell shrinkage produced by the hyperosmolal peritubular environment while the unchanged K i in the face of cell shrinkage indicates and actual loss. It is concluded that mannitol-saline VE inhibits the Na pump producing a rise in Na i and a fall in K i .

Notes: Summary The authors present a technique of a lined nasolabial flap for closure of a large nasal septal perforation. This is illustrated with a case report. The etiology and symptoms of septum perforations are reviewed and the most common surgical techniques for closure are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Lifetimes and feeding times of high spin states in 156 Er have been measured employing the recoil distance method in the reaction 123 Sb(37 Cl,4n) at bombarding energies of 158 and 166 MeV. The yrast states up to spin 20 Ϝ were found to be collective. These levels are fed, however, from long-lived high spin states, causing time delays up to ∼ 100 ps, the existence of which is interpreted as a signature for an oblate shape at high spin.
