Notes: Summary A cytochemical study of gastric K+-stimulated p-nitrophenylphosphatase (K-NPPase) activity, corresponding to a K+-stimulated phosphoprotein phosphatase of H-K-ATPase system, has been made by a new cytochemical method. Sections of fixed guinea pig gastric mucosa in a mixture of 2% paraformaldehyde and 0.25% glutaraldehyde, were incubated with the incubation medium (1.0 M glycine-0.1 M KOH buffer, pH 9.0, 2.5 ml; 1.1 M KCl, 0.5 ml; 10 mM lead citrate dissolved in 50 mM KOH, 4 ml; levamisole, 6.0 mg; dimethyl sulfoxide, 2.0 ml; 0.1 M p-nitrophenylphosphate (Mg-salt), 1.0 ml; ouabain, 73.0 mg) for 30 min at room temperature. Under a light microscope the specific gastric K-NPPase reaction was distributed only in the parietal cells of the fundic glands. The electron microscopic cytochemistry showed that the gastric K-NPPase activity was localized on the membrane lining the apical surfaces, secretory canaliculi and tubulovesicles. On the other hand, ouabain-sensitive K-NPPase activity (Na-K-ATPase) was demonstrated to localize only in the basolateral membrane of parietal cells with Mayahara's method. These findings support the interrelationships between the apical surface membrane, secretory canalicular membrane and tubulovesicles, and the functional differentiation of the membrane between the secretory membrane and basolateral membrane.

Notes: We report the first experimental observation of excitonic polaritons in a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well with incident light propagating parallel to the quantum well layer. We have built a time-of-flight measurement system which allows us to investigate low-temperature optical properties of semiconductor waveguides with picosecond time resolution. This system has been used to measure propagation delay time of an incident light pulse transmitted through the quantum well. The delay time increases drastically near the photon energies resonant to the optical absorption lines of the quantum well excitons. This behavior shows that the group velocity of the light pulse decreases as a result of the formation of quantum well excitonic polaritons. The group velocity drops to 7×104 m/s at a heavy-hole exciton absorption line at 6.0 K.

Notes: Summary The effects of kallidinogenase on urinary kallikrein excretion, plasma immunoreactive prostanoids and platelet aggregation were investigated in patients with essential hypertension. Urinary kallikrein excretion and plasma 6-keto PGF1α concentration were significantly decreased in these patients. Significant decreases in blood pressure, as well as significant increases of urinary kallikrein excretion and plasma 6-keto PGF1α concentration after kallidinogenase administration were also observed.

Notes: Summary The distribution of F-actin, α-actinin and filamin in smooth muscle cells of the chicken was examined by immunofluorescent and immunoelectron microscopy. Those from the gizzard, the femoral artery and the aortic arch were compared. F-Actin labeled by NBD-phallacidin was seen diffusely distributed in the sarcoplasm in the gizzard and the femoral artery, but in the aorta it was observed as streaks and spots, with unstained areas in between. Epon sections of the aortic arch showed that bundles of thin myofilaments run in various directions interspersed with areas mostly occupied by intermediate filaments. α-Actinin labelling occurred in dense plaques along the sarcolemma in all the muscles examined. While dense bodies in the sarcoplasm were common and labelled for α-actinin in the gizzard and the femoral artery, hardly any were seen in the aortic arch and little labelling for α-actinin was observed in the sarcoplasm. Filamin was concentrated along the periphery of dense bodies and plaques in the gizzard and the femoral artery, but it was seen diffusely in the sarcoplasm of the aortic muscle. After chemical skinning of the latter, filamin labelling persisted only in the F-actin bundles, and other areas became negative. The present results show that smooth muscle cells of the aortic arch contrast with those of the gizzard and even with those of the femoral artery in the distribution of F-actin, α-actinin and filamin. The mechanisms of contraction and/or stress maintenance in the aortic smooth muscle may be different from those in other smooth muscles.

Notes: Abstract The samples for this study were made by oxidizing the interface region of an Fe/Al2O3 system containing either wüstite or Fe-FeO composite (I) as interlayer. The bonded materials of Fe/FeO/Al2O3 and Fe/I/Al2O3 were prepared by hot-pressing. For analysis of the boundary region electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used; at the FeO/Al2O3 and I/Al2O3 interfaces a newly formed reaction layer of about 6 μm in thickness containing iron, aluminium and oxygen could be identified, but EPMA failed to reveal the Fe/FeO interface. Therefore, the interface of iron single crystals with FeO scale was investigated by Auger electron spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and at the Fe/FeO interface formation of a transition layer with a thickness of several hundred nanometres was observed. Through the Fe/I interface, interdiffusion of iron occured. Fe/I/Fe and Al2O3/l/Al2O3 bonded materials had tensile strengths of 150 and 130 MPa, respectively, when an interlayer of Fe-25 mol% FeO was applied between both bonding pairs.

Notes: Abstract Studies have been carried out on electron beam induced polymerization of LB films of saturated and unsaturated long chain aliphatic acids, in an attempt to obtain information about the dose dependence of conversion in relation to molecular arrangement. The results indicate that polymerization of unsaturated aliphatic acid LB films occurred when irradiation was carried out in a nitrogen atmosphere and that the LB films of a disordered state are more sensitive to radiation than tightly packed LB films.

Notes: Summary Dibutyryl cyclic GMP was given intravenously to anesthetized dogs with doses of 0.0625. 0.125, 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 mg/kg, respectively. It induced decreases in blood pressure, heart rate, max LV dp/dt and total peripheral resistance with increase of stroke volume in a dose-dependent manner. Although these effects began to appear 30 sec after the administration in each dose, the duration of the effect was oberved 50 sec after the administration. Effects of 1 mg/kg dibutyryl cyclic GMP on mean blood pressure and max LV dp/dt were almost equal to those of 3 μg/kg acetylcholine, but dibutyryl cyclic GMP was revealed to have a slower onset and longer acting effects than acetylcholine. The administration of atropine did not block the effect of dibutyryl cyclic GMP but blocked those of acetylcholine. These results indicate that dibutyryl cyclic GMP does not exert these effects through muscarinic receptors in spite of its acetylcholine-like effects.
