Notes: The temporal growth rates, spatial behavior, and saturation characteristics of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) occurring in a CO2 laser–gas jet experiment are investigated experimentally by picosecond Thomson scattering of ruby laser light as well as by intensity and spectral measurements of the backscattered light. Exponential temporal growth of the ion acoustic waves was observed and found to have a growth rate in good agreement with theory. Spatial modulations in the ion-acoustic-wave amplitude resulting from plasma inhomogeneities were found to limit the backscattered reflectivity to less than 10%. The ion acoustic waves saturate at a fluctuation amplitude of 〈20%. Ion trapping is shown to account for the observed saturation as well as temporal modulations in the ion-acoustic-wave amplitude and sibebands in the backscattered spectra.

Notes: Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in a CO2 laser(λ0=10.6 μm) produced plasma has been studied experimentally. The enhanced electron plasma wave (epw) fluctuations observed with ruby laser Thomson scattering have been compared with the scattered infrared (IR) spectra and the high-energy (near 100 keV) electrons. No scattered IR light in the range 1.5λ0 〈λ〈2λ0 was observed although the epw fluctuations suggested there should be IR light in this range. A signal was detected at 2λ0 which is due to the two plasmon decay instability. The number and energy spectra of the fast electrons are well correlated with the Thomson scattered wave vector spectra.

Notes: The hardening ability of a dental palladium–silver (Pd–Ag–Sn–In) bonding alloy has been investigated, and the distribution of the elements along the metal–ceramic interface have been studied by microprobe analysis. The alloy was found to be highly heterogeneous in its ‘as-cast’ condition, but homogenized alloy was obtained after heating the alloy at 1000°C for 2h. Hardening occurred after annealing at 650°C for 1 h. A longer thermal treatment caused the hardness to decrease (over-ageing). The change in hardness could be attributed to an internal oxidation phenomenon. The additional elements tin and indium segregated towards the ceramic–metal interface, with a diffusion of indium only into the porcelain. Diffusion of silver in the ceramics, supposed to be the cause of the ‘greening’ of dental porcelains baked on silver-rich alloys, has not been detected by the microprobe across the interface.

Notes: Summary In 17 patients (10 patients with mitral insufficiency, 5 patients with tricuspid regurgitation, 2 patients with mitral stenosis) the result of valve reconstruction was evaluated by intraoperative two-dimensional transesophageal contrast-echocardiography (TEE). Therefore, 1–2 cc of an agitated contrast-medium (GelifundolR) were injected into the left or right ventricle. The result of reconstruction was assessed by the extent of regurgitant microbubbles into the left or right atrium. A successful valve repair could be demonstrated in 15 patients without or with only minimal regurgitation of contrast-fluid. In one patient residual severe mitral insufficiency after valve reconstruction could only be detected when valve function was examined by contrast-TEE in the beating heart. An intraoperative decision for valve replacement was made. In another patient, mild to moderate residual mitral incompetence was shown; no further surgical intervention was done. By TEE the function of reconstructed valves can be examined under physiological conditions in the beating heart. Surgeons can obtain additional intra-operatively information and certainty about the result of reconstruction and an early decision for valve replacement can be made if necessary.

Notes: Summary Corn production on the organic soils of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta of California was affected by the salinity of the irrigation water and the adequacy of salt leaching. Full production was achieved on soils that were saline the previous year, provided the electrical conductivity of the irrigation water (ECi) applied by sprinkling was less than about 2 dS/m and leaching was adequate from either winter rainfall or irrigation to reduce soil salinity (ECMSW) below the salt tolerance threshold for corn (3.7 dS/m). For subirrigation, an ECi up to 1.5 dS/m did not decrease yield if leaching had reduced ECMSW below the threshold. If leaching was not adequate, even nonsaline water did not permit full production. In agreement with previous results obtained in a greenhouse, surface irrigation with water of an electrical conductivity of up to 6 dS/m after mid-season (end of July) did not reduce yield below that of treatments where the salinity of the irrigation water was not increased at mid-season. Results also reconfirm the salt tolerance relationship established in the previous three years of the field trial. The earlier conclusion that the irrigation method (sprinkler or subirrigation) does not influence the salt tolerance relationship was also confirmed.

Notes: Abstract In two groups of dogs, we studied average rates of gastric emptying of 0.15 M NaCl, 0.6 M glucose, or 0.04 M oleate liquid meals while gastric pressures were controlled by a barostat and compared this emptying to spontaneous gastric emptying of the same three meals. In the first group of dogs, this comparison was made before and after truncal vagotomy+pyloroplasty (TVP); and in the second group, before and after antrectomy, first with gastroduodenostomy (A-BI) and then with Roux-Y bypass (A-RY). Under barostatically controlled gastric pressures, gastric emptying of oleate and glucose remained slower than emptying of saline before as well as after TVP or A-BI and A-RY. However, all operations accelerated initial spontaneous emptying, compressing differences between half-emptying times of the three meals. We conclude postfundic resistances remain after TVP or antrectomy but may act too late to alter rapid initial emptying.

Notes: Abstract We have characterized the dose-response of inhibition of gastric emptying by acid, glucose, and fat in duodenal ulcer (DU) patients and normals (N) matched by age and sex. Gastric emptying was measured by the George technique while intragastric pH was maintained constant by intragastric titration. Acid, glucose, and fat inhibited gastric emptying in a dose-dependent fashion in both groups. DU patients emptied all three types of meals faster than normals, but differences were only seen at the lower doses of glucose or with the less potent doses of acid and fat. With low concentrations of glucose and at all concentrations of acid, DU patients emptied the meals faster than normals only in the first 5 min; but with fat the differences persisted throughout the 30-min test. Differences in gastric emptying of liquid meals in DU patients vs normals are small, and they occur with nutrient as well as acid meals. The variable responses obtained with the different concentrations may explain the inconsistencies found by other workers.

Notes: Summary The diagnostic value of transoesophageal echocardiography was evaluated in 24 patients with aortic dissection and compared to transthoracic two-dimensional echocardiography, computer tomography, aortography, surgery and autopsy. Using transoesophageal echocardiography we found in 5 patients a type I dissection, in 5 patients a type II and in 14 patients a type III dissection. Transthoracic two-dimensional echocardiography was positive in 3/5 type I, 2/5 in type II and 2/14 in type III dissections. Computer tomography was unable to demonstrate an intimal flap in 1/2 patients with type I, 2/3 type II and 1/11 type III dissections. Aortography was negative in 1/4 type I, 3/5 type II and 3/12 patients with type III dissection. Additional information concerning thrombus formation, localisation of the entry tear, differentiation between true and false lumen, flow dynamics within the true and false lumen as well as accompaning aortic regurgitation may be obtained by transoesophageal echocardography.
