    Notes: Product-concept testing is a popular activity in marketing research. Often the number of new product/service concepts under study far exceeds the time available for any single respondent. Respondents therefore may receive only a subset of the concepts comprising the total design. Researchers are interested in making plausible imputations for the missing evaluations of any given respondent.This paper proposes a model and an iterative estimation procedure to impute missing entries for each evaluator. The model and the procedure incorporate (1) the internal structure of the response matrix and (2) an ancillary matrix of (nonmissing) respondent background data; they also (3) allow for individual differences in respondents' uses of the numerical rating scale. The model is applied to both real and synthetic data. Suggestions also are given on how the data imputations may be used in market segmentation and product-line decisions.

    Notes: Abstract A detailed description of a multiport detection experiment operating close to the quantum noise limit is presented. Simultaneous phase and amplitude measurements were made on signals of only five photons energy with a signal-to-noise ratio that was accountable to within 2 dB of the quantum limit. Statistical examination of the noise showed excellent agreement with the gaussian distribution predicted by both the semiclassical and fully quantum theories.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary A brief study of the analytical characteristics of a commercial FANES atomiser is reported. Experiments were performed to assess the influence of the FANES discharge on Cd analyte atom formation and matrix interference effects. An attempt was made to measure changes in the electron concentration under different operating conditions from H β line profile measurements but only general trends could be identified. The temperature of the atomiser tube was shown to have an influence on the nature of the FANES background spectrum.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Es wird über eine kurze Untersuchung der analytischen Eigenschaften einer kommerziellen FANES Atomisierungseinrichtung berichtet. Es wurde versucht, den Einfluß der FANES-Entladung auf die Atombildung und auf Matrixinterferenzen bei der Cadmiumbestimmung festzulegen. Weiter wurde versucht, Änderungen in der Elektronenkonfiguration unter verschiedenen Betriebsbedingungen durch Messen von H β -Linienprofilen zu bestimmen, es konnten aber nur allgemeine Trends identifiziert werden. Es wurde gezeigt, daß die Temperatur des Atomisierungsrohrs einen Einfluß auf die Art des FANES Untergrundspektrums hat.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary In electrothermal atomisation, the rapid volatilisation of a sample into a hot constant temperature environment is recognised as a desirable condition for improved atom formation and the control of vapour phase interferences. The introduction of samples on a probe into a constant temperature environment offers one of the simplest methods for approaching the optimum conditions for this technique. This paper reviews the various investigations carried out at the University of Strathclyde in attempts to identify the important design characteristics of graphite probe atomisation. Factors considered include: a) the direction of entry of the probe into the atomiser, b) the dimensions and shape of the probe, c) material for probe manufacture, and d) the analytical performance of the various probe systems investigated to date.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Beim elektrothermischen Atomisieren wird das rasche Verdampfen einer Probe in eine heiße Umgebung konstanter Temperatur als wünschenswerte Bedingung für eine bessere Atomisierung und die Beseitigung von Gasphaseninterferenzen anerkannt. Das Einführen einer Probe in einen Ofen bei konstanter Temperatur mit Hilfe einer Sonde bietet eine der einfachsten Möglichkeiten, nahezu optimale Bedingungen für diese Technik zu erreichen. Die vorliegende Veröffentlichung gibt einen Überblick über die verschiedenen Untersuchungen an der Universität Strathclyde, die wichtigsten Konstruktionsmerkmale bei der Atomisierung von der Graphitsonde zu erarbeiten. Hierzu gehören: a) Eintrittsrichtung der Sonde in den Ofen, b) Dimensionen und Form der Sonde, c) Material zur Herstellung der Sonde, d) analytische Leistungsfähigkeit der bislang untersuchten Sondensysteme.
