Notes: Abstract Mercury adsorption of HgCl2 and 2-methoxyethylmercury chloride (Aretan) (100 mg Hg L−1) was measured for three soil profiles from Morogoro, Arusha, and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. The adsorption was investigated for the physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties of the soils. All soil samples showed greater capacity for adsorption of Aretan than for HgCl2. In the Morogoro profile Hg adsorption decreased with depth but in the other two soils, the minimum adsorption occurred in the third horizon and increased both upwards and downwards. In the Morogoro profile, Aretan adsorption correlated well with pH. Adsorption of both Aretan and HgCl2 correlated well with the distribution of organic C and with the cation exchange capacity of the soils. In the Arusha and Dar es Salaam profiles Hg adsorption was not significantly correlated with any of the soil properties tested.

Notes: Graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was carried out on jute fibers using a V5+ -cyclohexanone redox initiator system. The effect of the concentration of acid, monomer, and V5+ on graft yield have been studied. In order to obtain optimum conditions of grafting, the effects of temperature, acid, reaction medium, solvent, and some inorganic salts on graft yield have been investigated. The most remarkable features of the investigation include the proposition of a mechanism and derivation of rate expression for the grafting process. More than 100% grafting could be achieved with the present system.

Notes: Abstract Effluent, air, and soil samples near a battery factory in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where HgCl2 is used to prevent mold growth, were collected to explore the potential for pollution of the environment from industrial discharge of Hg. Flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry was used for Hg determinations. The concentration of Hg in the effluent ranged from 〈0.2 to 5.2 mg L−1 and the Hg concentration varied greatly within and among sampling days, showing different peaks. Air contained a mean of 4.0 μg m−3 with little variation within and between sampling days. Soils near the factory contained high Hg levels, from 6.7 to 472 mg kg−1 in the immediate vicinity, the highest level being associated with disposal of solid waste (defective batteries). Downwind the concentration of Hg decreased with increasing distance from the factory resulting in a soil concentration of 1.0 mg Hg kg−1 about 2 km away. Upwind the Hg concentration decreased drastically within a distance of 100 to 200 m.

Notes: Abstract The problem of an orthotropic infinite plate of finite width containing a centrally located stressed Griffith crack is considered. The crack is located perpendicular to the edges of the orthotropic plate. The crack tips are fully yielded and in the inelastic zones the material carries only constant normal stresses equal to the yield stress. Dugdale's model is employed to find the effects of the material anisotropy on the size of the plastic zones around the crack tips. Graphical results showing the effects of anisotropy on the length of the plastic zone are also presented.

Notes: Abstract The present paper examines the elastostatic problem related to the axisymmetric rotation of a rigid circular punch which is bonded to the surface of a non-homogeneous isotropic elastic halfspace. The non-homogeneity corresponds to an axial variation of the linear elastic shear modulus according to the exponential form % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGqiVu0Je9sqqrpepC0xbbL8F4rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGaam4raiaacI% cacaWG6bGaaiykaiabg2da9iaadEeadaWgaaWcbaGaaGymaaqabaGc% cqGHRaWkcaWGhbWaaSbaaSqaaiaaikdaaeqaaOGaaeiiaiaabwgada% ahaaWcbeqaaiaab2cacqaH+oaEcaqG6baaaaaa!439C!\[G(z) = G_1 + G_2 {\text{ e}}^{{\text{ - }}\xi {\text{z}}} \]. A Hankel transform development of the governing equations yields a set of dual integral equations which in turn can be reduced to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. A numerical evaluation of this integral equation yields results which can be used to estimate the torque-twist relationship for the circular punch.

Notes: Studies have been made on the kinetics and mechanism of the retardation of V5+-thiourea initiated polymerization of acrylonitrile by phenol in the temperature range 40 - 50°C. The effects of retarder (phenol), metal ion, monomer, sulphuric acid, some inorganic salts, and organic solvents have also been studied. The most remarkable observation in the present investigation is the positive intercept obtained from the plot of [M]/Rp vs. 1/[M]. A reaction mechanism has been suggested and a suitable rate expression has been proposed and explained in the light of experimental findings.
