Notes: The components of genetic variation were studied in four F2 crosses (PG3× 5064, T163× B.V., T163× Arkel and 5064 × ED) for quantitative characters such as days to flowering, plant height, pod number, seed number, test weight and yield/plant. The overall epistasis (T type) was, in general, a major contributor for genetically controlling the expression of the characters in all the- four crosses except for the character seed number in crosses 1 and JV, where the j + l component at epistasis played a significant role in determining the expression of this attribute:. Though the ‘j + l’ component of the epistasis was significant, it was relatively less important than the ‘i’ type epistasis. Both the additive and dominance components of the genetic variation were highly significant for all the trans studied in all die four sets of crosses. The expression of the dominance was directional only for a few characters in certain crosses. The degree of dominance lies in the partial range, and heritability estimates obtained were high for most of the trails. The possible application of cross prediction in the isolation of superior recombinant inbred lines in pea is discussed.

Notes: The current study examines the effects of N-nitrosonornicotine (NNN) and all trans-retinoic acid (RA) on the synthesis and composition of lipids of oral epithelial cells grown in culture. Cells were exposed to NNN, RA or methylene chloride (the vehicle for the NNN and RA) and the lipids labelled with [14C]-acetate. Lipids were extracted from the cells, separated by paper chromatography, located by autoradiography, and acetate incorporation determined by liquid scintillation spectrometry. Cholesterol labelling was significantly decreased by the RA between 4 and 48 h when compared to the NNN-treated or control cells. After 48 h the incorporation levels in the presence of the two last compounds decreased. Free fatty acid labelling was also significantly less in cells exposed to RA, while labelling of triglycerides and phospholipids was increased. N-nitrosonornicotine seemed to produce a decreased labelling of cholesterol after 96 h continuous exposure. The results of these studies suggest that retinoid rapidly elevates the cell content of lipid formed from the glycerolipid pathway and membrane mechanisms may be modulated by this effect.

Notes: Abstract In this paper certain theorems of theoretical interest have been established with the help of the geometrical properties of Maxwellian surface (which is spanned by the flow and field lines). These theorems shed light on the behaviour of steady incompressible hydromagnetic flows. The complex-lamellar acceleration and simple geodesic motion admitted by such flows have also been studied.

Notes: Abstract The present paper examines the axisymmetric problem of the axial translation of a rigid circular disc inclusion of finite thickness which is wedged in smooth contact in a penny-shaped crack. Results for the axial stiffness of the embedded inclusion and the stress intensity factor at the boundary of the penny shaped crack are evaluated in exact closed form.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der zweikernige Kupfer(II)-Harnstoff-Komplex wurde dargestellt.

Notes: Abstract A binuclear copper(II)—urea complex was synthesized and its structure was established from elemental analyses, IR, UV and visible spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements to be [OC(NH2)2Cu(OH)2]2. The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of the complex were studied by recording thermogravimetric measurements in streams of nitrogen and oxygen. TG analysis showed three main steps of decomposition, leading to Cu2O formation in the final stage.

Notes: Summary Based on triaxial compression studies on eight coals, the well known empirical relation $$\sigma _1 = \sigma _{\text{c}} + a\sigma _3^b$$ has been suggested as the best fit. The parametersa, b and internal friction μ are shown to be interrelated. Values for μ given in Bieniawski's classification tables are used to obtaina andb for a given Rock Mass Rating (RMR), according to these interrelations. This procedure thus gives a simple failure criterion for rock masses. This non-linear failure criterion has been used in developing two independent pillar strength approaches, the first based on a Wilson type method (1972) and the second by estimating the total confining stress at the pillar centre. The performance of these new equations has been compared with some of the more popular strength formulae as tested against 16 failed and 27 stable pillar case studies. A nomogram is presented for pillar design based on the second approach developed.

Notes: Abstract Synthetic cubic boron nitride (CBN) compacts are an important tool material used extensively for the machining of hardened steels. The paper describes work on the synthesis and characterization of CBN compacts. A 200 tonne cubic press has been used for the generation of high pressures. Solid solutions of TiN and TiC have been used as the binder material. The CBN powder and the binder are homogenously mixed and the mixed powder is pressed in a steel die under a pressure of about 3 kbars (300 M Pa). The pellets so formed are the starting material for synthesizing the compacts. Compacts both with and without a tungsten carbide substrate have been synthesized. The best compacts are formed at 58kbar (5.8 G Pa) and 1450° C. The sintered compacts after grinding and polishing are characterized by using powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Knoop hardness measurements made on the best CBN compacts give a hardness of 3400HK 0.5.

Notes: Summary Gene effects, and interactions, and associations between days-to-flower initiation and maturity, number of secondary branches and siliquae per plant, and 1,000-seed weight and yield per plant were studied in a cross of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea (L.) Czern & Coss) using the parents and F1, F2, F3, B1, B2, B11, B12, B21, B22, B1S, B2S, B1F1, B2F1, B1bip, B2bip, F2P1, F2F1, and F2bip generations. A linked digenic model was adequate for all characters studied. According to this model, the main effects, additive and interactions between linked pairs of genes, were present in varying proportions for days-to-flower initiation and maturity and number of siliquae per plant. The contribution of linked epistatic effects, however, was much greater than that of additive effects. Dominance effects contributed significantly to the inheritance of days-to-flower initiation. Duplicate epistasis was observed for all traits except 1,000-seed weight where epistasis was of the complementary type. A complete association among the genes of similar effect (increasing or decreasing) was observed for number of secondary branches and siliquae, and yield per plant. Coupling phase linkage was observed for days-to-flower initiation whereas repulsion phase linkage was observed for daysto-maturity and 1,000-seed weight.

Notes: Abstract In order to study the degree of genetic differentiation in natural populations of Drosophila ananassae, the mean genetic identity has been computed on the basis of differences in the gene arrangement frequencies. The estimates of genetic identity suggest that the populations from Keral, South India are genetically similar to the populations from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands though they are isolated by nearly 2 000 km of water. However, the South Indian populations are genetically more differentiated than the North Indian populations.
