Notes: The influence and redistribution of the inert gas Kr in chromium silicide formation have been investigated by MeV He backscattering spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that krypton implanted in the chromium film remains stationary with respect to the chromium during silicide formation, but krypton implanted in the silicon substrate accumulate at the silicon/silicide interface. The effect of krypton on the rate of silicide formation is much more pronounced when the krypton is in the chromium rather than in the silicon substrate. The thermal growth of CrSi2 is linear with time in a krypton-free sample, but becomes parabolic when the krypton is incorporated in the silicide at a concentration of 1 at. %. The activation energy associated with Si diffusion through CrSi2 is increased from 1.4±0.1 eV to 2.6±0.1 eV by the presence of krypton in the silicide. The results are interpreted as being due to segregation of krypton on grain boundaries in CrSi2 and subsequent retardation of diffusion along the boundaries.

Notes: Abstract Seven oral squamous cell carcinomas developed in HMT rats were studied with light and electron microscopy. Two carcinomas in extra-oral sites were also described. Histodifferentiation of oral squamous cell carcinomas ranged from well-differentiated to poorly-differentiated, comparable to that of the same disease in humans. Ultrastructural features characteristic of human oral carcinomas were observed in the HMT rat carcinomas.

Notes: A biopsy taken from an annular eruption on the thigh of an infant boy showed features of Ofuji's eosinophilic pustular folliculitis, yet fungal hyphae were demonstrated in the lesion. This ease is reported to illustrate that tinea infection can simulate eosinophilic pustular folliculitis histologically.

Notes: The monoclinic anthracene crystal is used as an example to demonstrate the feasibility of optimizing the orientation of molecules in the unit cell by matching calculated and experimental refractivity ellipsoids using a simplex algorithm. The calculated refractivity ellipsoid is determined by use of an empirical formula using bond directional polarizabilities. Optimization of the molecular orientations to provide the best fit to the experimental ellipsoid starting from several assumed orientations results in fits for which the maximum deviation from the experimental molecular orientation was no more than 10°. The method can be applied to other monoclinic molecular crystals directly and could be extended to other crystal systems with anisotropic optical properties.

Notes: Abstract The human gene for liver fatty acid binding protein was assigned to chromosome 2 using human-rodent somatic cell hybrids and Southern filter hybridization of cell hybrid DNA. The filters were hybridized to a radiolabeled cloned cDNA which covers 485 bases. Hybridization of the DNA to a human-specific 7.5-kb DNA fragment in HindIII-digested DNA was used to identify the human liver fatty acid binding protein gene. Results from two cell hybrids with chromosomal rearrangements suggest that the gene is on the short arm of chromosome 2.

Notes: Abstract Fetal hemoglobin analysis and globin gene mapping have identified one type of βo-thalassemia and four different γ globin gene arrangements among newborn babies from the northern part of Sardinia. The βo-thalassemia with a nonsense mutation at codon 39 was found on two chromosomes, each with a distinct pattern of polymorphic restriction sites; one had the AγT (Aγ75 Ile → Thr) mutation, while the second did not. Four closely related haplotypes were identified for chromosomes with the AγT mutation. The γ-thalassemia heterozygosity with the —GAγ— hybrid gene fell into two categories. One apparently originated through crossing-over between mismatched chromosomes characterized by the most common haplotype, while the other had polymorphisms resembling those of a less frequently occurring chromosome. Chromosomes with the —Gγ—AGγ—Aγ— triplication had polymorphic sites to be expected for this condition, being complimentary to the —GAγ— thalassemias. Of the two additional γ globin gene variations the —Gγ—Gγ— arrangement was associated with the chromosome with the most commonly occurring haplotype, while the chromosome with the —Aγ—Aγ— arrangement had a haplotype characteristic for that with the AγT mutation, which identified an —Aγ—AγT— arrangement. The incidental discovery of a silent β-chain mutant, Hb Hamilton, with the Val → Ile substitution at position β11, in five newborns was also reported.

Notes: Abstract The corrosion resistance of steel is vastly improved when a zinc cathodic protective layer is applied. In recent years there has been renewed interest in producing this galvanized coating electrolytically. As with many deposition processes, the control of the operating parameters is very important in order to produce good quality zinc coatings. The homogeneity, ductility and smoothness of the zinc layer are critical. These factors are usually influenced by the electrochemical nature of the solution and organic additives are often used to assist in control. Studies on the polarization behaviour of solutions for electrogalvanizing electrolytes were made. Cyclic voltammetry techniques were used to develop methods which might be applicable in monitoring the active organic content of liquorice in solution. The morphologies and orientations of the zinc were studied using SEM and X-ray diffraction techniques.

Notes: Tracer diffusion coefficients were measured for benzene, toluene, mesitylene, naphthalene, and phenanthrene in dense ethanol at 0.56 ≤ TR ≤ 1.07 and ρR ≥ 1.44. The results were used to examine the temperature dependence of the degree of association between ethanol molecules across the entire range of temperature. The hard-sphere tracer diffusion equation and the Stokes-Einstein equation were used to develop two engineering correlations. The former approach was found to be adequate for solvents of relatively compact molecules, and the latter to be more general in its applications. The absolute deviation of prediction from observed values of tracer diffusivities is 4%, with a maximum error of 13%.
