    Notes: Ultralow-power, high-resolution, pulsed-laser photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectroscopies were carried out in molecular-beam-epitaxial GaAs/AlxGa1−xAs multi-quantum-well structures at 5 K. Fine structures were observed for the first time in the PLE spectra, both in the heavy-hole and light-hole excitonic regions. Most of the fine structures are considered to arise from monolayer fluctuations in the thicknesses of the GaAs wells. Dramatic changes in the line shapes and the peak positions of the PL and PLE spectra were observed by applying selective PL detection and excitation spectroscopic techniques.

    Notes: A new nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) flow-velocity-imaging method applied to the study of the fluid dynamics is introduced. In the proposed technique, a selection gradient is used for the phase encoding, and since the selection gradient is relatively small compared with the conventional gradient for phase encoding it allows the measurement of high-velocity flow. To obtain the phase-velocity relationship, the Bloch equation is solved numerically and establishes the quantitative phase-velocity relationship of the flow under the slice selection gradient and echo radio frequency pulse. The flow effect compensation in the directions other than the slice selection direction is achieved by applying additional flow coding gradients similar to the conventional flow phase coding. The experimental NMR flow images obtained with the new technique are compared with the velocity measurements made with a laser Doppler velocimeter, and are found to be in close agreement.

    Notes: A set of rotations and Lorentz boosts is presented for studying the three-parameter little groups of the Poincaré group. This set constitutes a Lorentz generalization of the Euler angles for the description of classical rigid bodies. The concept of Lorentz-generalized Euler rotations is then extended to the parametrization of the E(2)-like little group and the O(2,1)-like little group for massless and imaginary-mass particles, respectively. It is shown that the E(2)-like little group for massless particles is a limiting case of the O(3)-like or O(2,1)-like little group. A detailed analysis is carried out for the two-component SL(2,c) spinors. It is shown that the gauge degrees of freedom associated with the translationlike transformation of the E(2)-like little group can be traced to the SL(2,c) spins that fail to align themselves to their respective momenta in the limit of large momentum and/or vanishing mass.

    Notes: A sensitive and selective analytical technique for the determination of free and total sulfites in food was developed using ion chromatography with electrochemical detection. Free and total sulfites in three dehydrated foods were analyzed by extraction of the sulfites at pH 2.0 and 8.9, respectively, and separation on an anion exclusion column with 5 mM H2SO4, pH 2, solution as eluant. Using an electrochemical detector set at + 0.40 volts vs Ag/AgCl electrode, sulfites equivalent to 0.1 ppm SO2 in the extract could be detected with detector response linear up to 6 ppm SO2.

    Notes: Some characteristics of an antioxidant factor in ginger rhizome were studied. The antioxidant property was evenly distributed across the cross-section of rhizome, and was very effective against lipid oxidation. Two thirds of the original activity remained after 2 hr of boiling. Its effectiveness was dependent on pH, increasing with increasing pH between 5 and 7. A linear relationship was observed between the amount of ginger extract added to the oxidation system and the protection factor values. The antioxidative effectiveness of ginger extract was further tested with fresh, frozen and precooked pork patties. The shelf life of all products determined by TBA value was improved by the inclusion of ginger extract.

    Notes: Summary The morphogenesis and cytodifferentiation of human colon cancer cells (LS174T and HT29) were examined by combining cancer cells with fetal rat digestive-tract mesenchyme in organ culture. LS174T cells migrated into the mesenchyme to form glandular structures composed of single columnar cells with their nuclei oriented basally, while HT29 cells formed cell masses with little lumen formation. Immunohistochemical studies with antibodies against carcinoembryonic antigen and secretory components showed that the composition of cell surface glycoproteins was not necessarily reversed to the normal type, even when neoplastic cells exhibited normal glandular structures.

    Notes: Summary A rapid, semiautomated system to quantitate and analyze leukocyte shape and locomotion was developed. Video images of moving leukocytes were obtained using a Vidicon camera mounted on a Nikon phase microscope. The video signal was either inputted directly, or indirectly via a video cassette recorder, to a Datacube video analog-digital, digital-analog converter. A Digital Equipment Corporation LSI 11/23 computer using the RT-11/TSX-Plus operating system and computer programs written in FORTRAN and MARCO assembly language permitted image segmentation, image display, and calculation of position, speed, direction of movement and orientation of each leukocyte at 10 s intervals. These data were stored on a winchester disk for subsequent evaluation of the leukocyte orientation, speed and direction of movement using statistical and graphical methods. The reproducibility of measurements made with the video system was tested by comparison with manual measurements; a correlation coefficient of 0.998 was obtained for the two methods. Rates of chemokinesis were then determined for unstimulated and chemokinetically stimulated polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) and found to average 12.8 μm/min and 18.1 μm/min, respectively. The high speed, ease of data analysis, and potential for multiparameter evaluation makes this system useful for directly evaluating leukocyte locomotion.

    Notes: Abstract Ternary alloys from the Al-Zr-B system were prepared as thin foils by a rapid quench technique. These foils were annealed isothermally as well as isochronally at various temperatures (150 to 550° C). The microstructures show that at high temperature, the grain growth is significantly retarded by the grain boundary pinning of boride precipitates. A strong age hardening is also a characteristic phenomenon in these alloys. It is found that microstructure and microhardness largely depend upon the zirconium/boron ratio of the alloy, indicating that the ratio determines the types of compounds occurring in this alloy system. It appears that in these alloys, high concentration of boron and the low ratio of zirconium/boron together yield stable precipitates at high temperatures.

    Notes: Summary Colorectal carcinomas are composed of heterogeneous cell subpopulations which may be instrumental in conferring metastatic potential and therapeutic refractoriness to these tumours. To assess cellular heterogeneity, the expression has been examined of two oncodevelopmental antigens, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and stage-specific embryonic antigen 1 (SSEA-1), by double immunofluorescence microscopy on 11 human colorectal carcinomas. Although both antigens were expressed in each tumour, their regional and cellular locations differed considerably. SSEA-1 expression was rarely expressed in poorly differentiated cancers but was enhanced with increasing degrees of differentiation. CEA expression was independent of histological differentiation. SSEA-1 was expressed with similar frequency in cell membranes, cytoplasm, and glandular contents regardless of degree of differentiation. Cytoplasmic staining with CEA however, was limited to more poorly differentiated tumours. In normal mucosa remote from the tumours and transitional mucosa adjacent to them, SSEA-1 stained only a few lower crypts whereas CEA stained a majority of both upper and lower crypts. Although biochemical studies have indicated that the SSEA-1 epitope may reside on CEA molecules, the fact that colon cancer tissues express these two antigens quite heterogeneously suggests differences in antigenic processing which may be dependent upon the degree of cellular differentiation.
