Notes: The potential of ferroelectric liquid crystals for application as pyroelectric infrared detectors is examined. The liquid crystals studied belong to a family of biphenyl and phenylbenzoate esters. It is found that even within this first liquid-crystal family examined, the materials figure of merit compares well with ferroelectric solid materials commonly used for infrared detection and imaging. Because they permit very simple and flexible device design, liquid crystals are attractive candidates for these applications. However, for low-frequency applications, attention must be paid to the reduction of thermal loading by the cell walls.

Notes: A microminiature refrigeration system allowing precise temperature control above 77 K has been tested successfully as a compact Dewar to achieve the necessary cryogenic temperatures to operate optically pumped semiconductor lasers in an external cavity. Using this system in a mode-locked CdSe laser resulted in a stable average output power of up to 10 mW. Tunability from 7015 to 7160 A(ring) was achieved by changing the temperature from 77 to 111 K.

Notes: Patterns of laminar flow development in the entrance region of an elliptical slit have been determined experimentally by hot-wire anemometry. The inlet cross section is circular, tapering downstream into elliptical sections of increasing eccentricity. The cross-sectional area is maintained constant throughout, to facilitate an assessment of wall effects on the developing flow patterns. Flow development along the major axis is found to lag the change in geometric contour, so that axisymmetric inlet profiles do not acquire the elliptical symmetry predicted by conformal mapping. Nevertheless, flow distributions are invariant in the mean: axial partial flows through downstream elliptical rings are nearly the same as on corresponding circular rings at the inlet. This near-invariance holds approximately even for uniformly-curved pipe sections in which intense swirl is present, and so may have more general application to conduit flows than just for the examples reported here.

Notes: The effects of low dose (100 krad) irradiation on microflora, sensory characteristics, and development of oxidative rancidity of vacuum packaged pork loins was investigated after irradiation and during low temperature (4°C) storage up to 21 days. Irradiation reduced numbers of mesophiles, psychrotrophs, anaerobic bacteria (P〈0.01), and staphylococci (P〈0.05), with the effect on mesophiles and psychrotrophic spoilage organisms the greatest. Effect of irradiation on sensory characteristics of pork loin was minimal with no detectable differences between irradiated and nonirradiated pork after 14 days of storage. Irradiation of pork did not affect cooking loss or thiobarbituric acid values.

Notes: Survival and growth of inoculated Clostridium sporogenes PA3679 and natural aerobic and anaerobic bacterial flora were studied in refrigerated (5°C) and subsequently temperature abused (24–25°C), cooked, vacuum-packaged bratwurst containing 0.5% sodium acid pyrophosphate (SAPP) or sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) with or without sodium nitrite. Phosphates alone or combined with nitrite did not affect aerobic bacterial counts but resulted in reduced clostridial and anaerobic counts at 5°C. Upon temperature abuse, inhibition of all bacteria by SAPP was significant (P〈0.05) for up to 48 hr and greatly enhanced by 100 ppm but not by 50 ppm sodium nitrite, whereas STPP lost its antimicrobial properties after 24 hr. Soluble orthophosphate levels had a positive correlation with bacterial inhibition in SAPP-treated bratwurst.

Notes: Abstract The effect of a 15 vol% zirconia dispersion on the critical current density for failure initiation of beta″-alumina solid electrolyte was examined. Single phase and composite electrolytes were tested in standard sodium-sodium test cells and subjected to increasing ionic currents. Onset of degradation in the electrolyte was detected by monitoring acoustic emissions from the cell. Preliminary examination of the electrolyte material showed that the problem of producing a uniform dispersion of zirconia in pure beta″-alumina had not been solved. However, the electrolytes were of sufficient quality to draw important conclusions about the potential of transformation toughening for improving electrolyte performance.
