Notes: Abstract The floor of the western Solomon Sea (for new bathymetric map see inside back cover of this issue) is dominated by the arched and ridged basement of the Solomon Sea Basin, the partly-sediment-filled New Britain Trench, and a more completely filled trench, the Trobriand Trough. There is a deep basin where the trenches join (149° Embayment), and a silled basin west of the New Britain Trench (Finsch Deep). Submarine canyons descend from the west and south to the 149° Embayment. Abyssal fans and plains are structurally defined and locally disturbed by young faults. Probable submerged pinnacle reefs stand in water depths as great as 1,200 m.

Notes: Abstract By utilizing the characteristics of amorphous alloys capable of possessing specific electrocatalytic activity and corrosion resistance by alloying and surface activation treatment, an attempt was made to find amorphous alloys which are active as the anode material for production of sodium hypochlorite by electrolysis of seawater. Amorphous Ni-Nb and Ni-Ta alloys containing only 0.5–2.0 at % palladium and other platinum group metals showed a very high activity for chlorine production by electrolysis of 0.5M NaCl at 30°C when they were previously immersed in 46% HF for surface activation. The current efficiency of these surface-activated alloys for chlorine evolution considerably exceeded that of the currently used, most active Pt-Ir/Ti electrode for electrolysis of seawater. The surface activation treatment resulted in preferential dissolution of alloy constituents unnecessary for the electrocatalytic activity, i.e. nickel and valve metals, with a consequent enrichment of electrocatalytically active platinum group elements in the surface-activated layer. The corrosion weight loss of the surface-activated amorphous alloys under the steady state conditions for chlorine production was undetectable by a microbalance.

Notes: Abstract The dependence of the dissolution temperature (T sol) of isotactic polyacrylonitrile (PAN) on tacticity was studied for three dinitrile solvents. A linear relationship was obtained in the inverse plots of the tacticity dependence of the T sol of PAN. A phenomenological analogy between the tacticity dependence of the T sol of isotactic PAN and the molecular-weight dependence of the glass-transition temperature of amorphous polystyrene is discussed from a thermodynamic point of view. The linear relationships in both phenomena are explained in terms of a common mechanism: a breakdown of thermodynamic competition, enthalpy, and entropy through the segment mobility. The significance of segment concept and molecular mobility at elevated temperatures are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The recoil reactions of technetium produced by100Ru/γ, p/99mTc reaction were studied in γ-irradiated mer- and fac-Ru/ba/3 targets. Yields of mer- and fac-Tc/ba/3 were determined by column chromatographic separation developed in our previous work. In the initial recoil reaction yields mer-form of Tc/ba/3 was much more abundant than fac-form in the mer-Ru/ba/3, but the reverse held good in the fac-Ru/ba/3 showing selectivity in recoil replacement reactions in geometrical isomers. In the annealing reactions, however, such selectivity disappeared and the fac/mer ratio for the annealed portions could be explained by the following mixed mechanisms of ligand incorporation. $$\begin{gathered} Tc/ba/_2^ + + ba^ - \to Tc/ba/_3 \hfill \\ Tc/ba/^{2 + } orTc^{3 + } + xba \to Tc/ba/_3 \hfill \\ /x = 2or3/. \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$

Notes: Abstract The Borg (binder of Rho GTPases) family proteins interact with CDC42 and TC10 in a guanosine triphosphate (GTP)-dependent manner. We have isolated a full-length cDNA of the mouse Borg4 gene, which is a member of this family. Sequence analysis revealed that this gene encoded a putative 349-amino acid protein. By reverse transcription — coupled polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis, we observed that Borg4 was expressed ubiquitously in adult tissues. Additionally, we determined the entire cDNA sequence of the putative human Borg4 orthologue. By fluorescence in situ hybridization, mouse Borg4 and the putative human orthologue have been assigned to mouse chromosome 11E and human chromosome 17q24–25, which has been described as syntenic to the mouse region.

Notes: Abstract We identified a novel interstitial deletion that spanned from exons 5 to 10 of KAL1 in two Japanese brothers with X-linked Kallmann syndrome (KS; MIM no. 308700). Both brothers had hypogonadism, unilateral renal agenesis, and disturbance of the sense of smell, but they had no other neurological manifestations, including mental disturbance. Their mother was confirmed to be an asymptomatic carrier, by use of a comparative multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. The present patients are further examples of patients with KS without mental disturbance caused by a mutation confined to KAL1.
