    Notes: The postoperative analgesic management of a patient who was intolerant of morphine and pethidine is described. An epidural infusion of fentanyl up to 1 μg/kg/hour was ineffective for analgesia in the first 18 hours. Subsequently. 50-μg boluses and an infusion of 0.5 μg/kg/hour sufentanil provided satisfactory analgesia with minimal side effects for 28 hours.

    Notes: Abstract The reaction of racemization in which the L amino acids are reversibly converted into the corresponding D amino acids, proceeds in geological environment at such a slow rate that it may be used as a geochronometer. However, in fossils several parameters may affect the rate of racemization, i.e. moisture, surface, pH buffer and metal cations. This work consists of a systematic study of total amino acid content in fossil bones from two neanderthalian sites. The amino acid distributions of all specimens were determined and compared to that of fresh bone. The D/L amino acid were quantified and expressed in terms of age as a function of the temperature. The results led us to consider the «La Roquette» site older than «Les Canalettes» site.

    Notes: The site specificities for intercalation of steffimycin B, adriamycin, echinomycin, and ethidium bromide with DNA have been determined by CD first-neighbor analysis. The first three, which are antineoplastic antibiotics, all exhibit preferential binding to sites comprised of guanine and cytosine (GpC, CpG, and CpC or its complement GpG). Ethidium bromide displays nonspecific intercalation. The results are compared with findings from “footprinting” studies.

    Notes: Weak acids and hydrogen ions in different concentration combinations affect the intracellular pH value (pHi) of Zygosaccharomyces bailii. The lowest pHi value measured was not at the most extreme, but at intermediate conditions of inhibition. Proton and organic-acid ejection, on a cell volume basis, is greater in cells grown under inhibitory conditions and is stimulated by weak acids, whilst in cells not grown under inhibitory conditions acid efflux is lower and is depressed by weak acids; this may be important in the maintenance of tolerable pHi values in the presence of weak acids. The concentration of benzoic acid measured internally is identical to the value expected from its pK, external pH and pHi. Addition of fructose to starved cells causes both a decreased pHi and a concomitant efflux of previously loaded benzoic acid, quantitatively in accord with the shift in equilibrium of the freely permeable undissociated acid. There is no evidence that weak acids are actively extruded. Protoplast volume also varies with hydrogen-ion and weak-acid concentration and this too may play a role in intracellular pH maintenace.
