    Notes: We report on an analyzer for elliptically polarized Lyman-α radiation (λ=121.6 nm) which has a high transmission (14%) and can be used in ultrahigh vacuum. The analyzer consists of a pile of four MgF2 plates and a MgF2 quarter-wave plate for Lyman-α light. We discuss examples for the application of this device by measurements of polarized Lyman-α light emitted after ion-atom and ion-surface collisions.

    Notes: Abstract Nine patients, 6 weeks to 17 years of age with esophageal atresia (EA), developed esophageal strictures and were treated with 26 balloon catheter dilatations over a period of 3 years; 6 are now asymptomatic. Five of the 9 patients had suspected reflux esophagitis, confirmed in 3 by biopsy and treated medically prior to dilatation. Seven of the 9 patients had a primary anastomosis, 1 a gastric tube, and 1 a colonic interposition. Most dilatations in the group of 7 were performed with balloon (B) ≥ the diameter of the distal esophagus (E) (B/E≥1). The 3 residually symptomatic patients include an infant dilated conservatively (B/E〈1) to facilitate later bouginage, 1 patient with a recurrent stricture after stopping medical therapy and home bouginage, and 1 infant who had a persistent anastomotic stricture, suspected but untreated reflux esophagitis, and a perforation during the second balloon dilatation. Balloon catheter esophageal dilatation, as an alternative to bouginage, is usually a safe and effective procedure when reflux esophagitis is diagnosed and treated prior to dilatation.

    Notes: Abstract Rheology is a sensitive measure of the evolving molecular structure in a crosslinking polymer. Dynamic mechanical experiments in small amplitude oscillatory shear give the storage modulus G′(ω, p) and the loss modulus G″(ω, p) as a function of frequencyω. The extent of crosslinking, p(t), changes with reaction time. Dynamic mechanical experiments allow detection of the gel point (GP) and give a macroscopic description of thecritical gel state (network polymer at GP). This critical gel state is used as a reference for describing the entire evolution of rheology. The most surprising discovery of these experiments was that critical gels exhibit stress relaxation in a power law, i. e. the relaxation modulus is given asG()=St −n. The relaxation exponent,n, depends on network structure. The power law behavior is an expression of mechanical self similarity (fractal behavior). The range of self similarity is defined between an upper and a lower frequency limit. The lower frequency limit (reciprocal of characteristic relaxation time) corresponds to an upper scaling length, thecorrelation length, which is of the order of the linear size of the largest molecular cluster (of pre-gel) or of the largest remaining percolation cluster (of post-gel). High frequencies probe relaxation within single chains. The upper frequency limit corresponds to a lower scaling length, theglass length, which is given by the dimension of the molecular network units responsible for glassy behavior. The correlation length and, hence, the characteristic relaxation time increase in the approach of the gel point, diverge to infinity at the gel point, and then decrease again with increasing extent of crosslinking. The critical gel has no characteristic length or time scale. All observations are restricted to polymers at a temperature above the glass transition temperature and at frequencies much below the glass frequency.

    Notes: Abstract Soft X-ray emission experiments on Cu x Rh1−x alloys for the compositionsx=0.0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.80 and 1.0, have been performed. In this paper we present the spectra of Cu-and Rh-L III core level-conduction band transitions. Using the data of recent self-consistent KKR-CPA electronic structure calculations we evaluate the corresponding SXS-cross sections and compare these theoretical results to our measurements.

    Notes: Abstract Experimental cross sections for single electron capture and target atom resonance line emission in impact of singly charged ions (He+, Ne+, Ar+, C+, N+, O+) on respectively Li(2s) and Na(3s) are presented and compared with semiempirical calculations of the Demkov-Olson type. It is shown that such calculations can still be useful despite involvement of metastable primary ion admixtures and several final states. In addition, observed undulations in the impact energy dependence of electron capture — and target excitation cross sections are discussed.

    Notes: Dynamic mechanical measurements allow direct determination of the instant at which a network polymer gels. In such an experiment, the evolution of G′(t,ω0) and G″ (t,ω0) is measured in small amplitude oscillatory shear as a function of cross-linking time t. The frequency ω0 is kept constant throughout. At the beginning of the experiment, G″ is orders of magnitude larger than G′, and at completion of reaction, this order is reversed. It recently has been suggested by Tung and Dynes that the gel point (GP) might occur at the time at which G′ and G″ cross each other. However, there is much dispute whether GP occurs exactly at the crossover or just somewhere in its vicinity. This study resolves the dispute by modeling the rheological behavior at GP: There is only one class of network polymers for which GP coincides with the crossover. This class of polymers exhibits, when reaching GP, power law relaxation G(t) ∼ t-n with a specific exponent value n = 1/2. Examples are stoichiometrically balanced network polymers and networks with excess cross-linker, however, only at temperatures much above the glass transition. Otherwise, the power law behavior would be masked by vitrification. Power law relaxation seems to be property of polymers at GP in general. However, some polymers have a different exponent value, n ≠ 1/2, in which case the crossover occurs before GP (for n 〈 1/2) or after GP (for n 〉 1/2); i.e. the crossover cannot be used for detecting GP. While there are no networks known to us with n 〈 1/2, recent experiments showed that network polymers that are lean on cross-linker exhibit power law relaxation with n 〉 1/2. A new method is suggested for measuring GP of these imbalanced networks.

    Notes: A numerical method is described for calculating the stress a viscoelastic melt exhibits in a flow, based on approximate kinematics. The method assumes that the kinematics are reasonably close to those of a shear-thinning fluid such as the Carreau model. The strain history of a given flow and the resulting stress are calculated via a tracking method from finite element kinematics. Fullfield flow birefringence experiments were done for lowdensity polyethylene and polystyrene flowing past a thin plate divider in a 1.254-mm planar slit die. By digitally analyzing birefringence photographs of the flow field, the birefringence was measured over two dimensions. These birefringence results are in good agreement with birefringence fields calculated from the numerical simulations and the stress-optical law. The flow fields were most highly oriented in a region surrounding the weld interface just downstream of the plate divider. This orientation relaxed farther downstream, with polystyrene relaxing faster than low-density polyethylene.

    Notes: Linear viscoelastic properties are found to be a sensitive measure of flow-induced structural changes in a block copolymer. Styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SBS) with 26% polystyrene (PS) forms a macrostructure in the quiescent state with grains of the order of 1-10 μm. Within each grain, phase separation gives rise to a regular two-phase microstructure with cylindrical PS domains with radius of the order of 200 Å. Large-amplitude oscillatory shear (γ = 4.5) at temperatures between 139 and 181°C was applied to after the grain structure with the objectives of removing the discontinuities at the grain boundaries and of aligning the domains into a continuous ultrastructure. The SBS behaved like a solid (tan δ 〈 1 at low ω) before and like a liquid (tan δ 〉 1) after shear modification. This change expressed itself in the removal of the long relaxation times from the linear viscoelastic spectrum; the intermediate and low relaxation times were not affected by the shear modification. The viscoelastic spectrum slowly recovered during annealing with recovery times of the order of the longest relaxation time of the quiescent structure. Birefringence studies showed that the SBS did not recover into its original grain structure but into a highly oriented domain structure. The discontinuities at the grain boundaries could not be removed completely.
