Notes: [Auszug] In the summer of 1959, a colony of white laboratory mice, Mus musculus L., was divided into two parts: one part was maintained as a control; in the other, each generation was subjected to treatment with DDT. DDT dissolved in sesame oil was administered by intraperitoneal injection at the rate of ...

Notes: A review is given of ceramic and single-crystal thin film ferroelectric oxides, emphasizing perovskite phases, together with some new developments on hafnia films. It is shown that single-crystal barium titanate films behave as bulk down to at least 77 nm, with no finite size effects, no phase transition temperature shifts, and no dielectric peak broadening or change from first- to second-order transitions, suggesting that the gradient defect model of Bratkovsky and Levanyuk correctly describes such effects as extrinsic in experimental studies of equally thin ceramic thin films. In ceramic barium–strontium titanate (BST) thin films, it is shown that there is also no intrinsic broadening or shifts in phase transitions, with sharp, unshifted, bulk-like transitions observed only as re-entrant upon warming from cryogenic temperatures; this shows that phase transitions in ceramic thin films are dominated by kinetics and not thermodynamics and are definitely not equilibrium measurements. At high fields (〉1 GV/m), the films exhibit space charge-limited conduction; no variable-range hopping is observed, contrary to recent studies on SrTiO3. Some novel, unconventional switching processes are discussed, comparing the “perimeter effect” (non-equilibrium, ballistic) with Molotskii's equilibrium model. Theory and experiment are described for [3D] nanotubes, nanorods, and nano-ribbons (or micro-ribbons). The layered-structure-perovskite–pyrochlore conversion in bismuth titanate is described together with the PbO+TiO2 phase separation in lead zirconate titanate during electrical breakdown, as are novel HfO2 precursors that demonstrate enhanced temperature crystallization from the amorphous state and hence commercial advantages for front-end processing.

Notes: [Auszug] Several types of micro-organism were isolated from the gut of a DDT-resistant female mouse5 by serial dilution and streakplate methods on agarbrainheartinfusion media. An ethanol solution of pure p,p'-DDT was placed in sterile test-tubes and evaporated over a hot-water bath. Sterile brainheart ...

Notes: Summary One hundred and forty one patients were treated in a combined Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group and Southwest Oncology Group phase-III study evaluating low-dose cytarabine (LDAC) versus supportive therapy for the treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Patients were randomized to either cytarabine 10 mg/m2 subcutaneously BID or supportive therapy. Central pathology review was required. All patients were classified according to the FAB criteria for MDS. The overall concordance rate for the MDS subtype was 52%, and 25 patients were pathology exclusions, including 20 with AML. The overall response rate to a single cycle of LDAC was 32%, with 11% complete and 21% partial responses. The median duration of response was 5.9 months, with a range of 1.4–33.5 months. Responses were seen in all subtypes. Infections were more common in the LDAC arm. There was no difference in the time to progression or the overall survival for patients treated with LDAC or supportive therapy. The incidence of leukemic transformation was similar in both arms at 15%, but it differed according to the MDS subtype. Patients receiving LDAC had a decreased transfusion requirement after 3 months. There was a significant correlation between the degree of cytoreduction after receiving a single cycle of LDAC and survival. This survival difference was most marked in patients with the RAEB and RAEB-T subtypes. Although LDAC produced responses in all subtypes of the MDS, there was no effect on overall survival or transformation to AML. However, selected patients benefited from a single cycle of LDAC with durable responses. A cytoreductive effect appears to be required for a durable response. Future studies should include pathology review and must address the clinical and biological heterogeneity of MDS.

Notes: Abstract Spark-plasma-sintering (SPS) has been applied to BaTiO3 to prepare dense ceramics consisting of submicrometre-sized powder. Relatively dense (typically 97% of the theoretical X-ray density) pellets with an average grain size remaining similar to that of the starting powder, approximately 0.6 μm, were obtained by the SPS process. Fixed frequency (1 kHz) measurements show the room temperature permittivity of SPS ceramics to be relatively high, approximately 3500, and at least double the value of conventionally sintered ceramics, approximately 1500. Alternating current (a.c.) impedance spectroscopy measurements show that SPS is an effective process to reduce the influence of intergranular (grain boundary) effects on the permittivity and direct current (d.c.) resistance characteristics of BaTiO3 ceramics substantially.

Notes: Linear viscoelastic properties are found to be a sensitive measure of flow-induced structural changes in a block copolymer. Styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SBS) with 26% polystyrene (PS) forms a macrostructure in the quiescent state with grains of the order of 1-10 μm. Within each grain, phase separation gives rise to a regular two-phase microstructure with cylindrical PS domains with radius of the order of 200 Å. Large-amplitude oscillatory shear (γ = 4.5) at temperatures between 139 and 181°C was applied to after the grain structure with the objectives of removing the discontinuities at the grain boundaries and of aligning the domains into a continuous ultrastructure. The SBS behaved like a solid (tan δ 〈 1 at low ω) before and like a liquid (tan δ 〉 1) after shear modification. This change expressed itself in the removal of the long relaxation times from the linear viscoelastic spectrum; the intermediate and low relaxation times were not affected by the shear modification. The viscoelastic spectrum slowly recovered during annealing with recovery times of the order of the longest relaxation time of the quiescent structure. Birefringence studies showed that the SBS did not recover into its original grain structure but into a highly oriented domain structure. The discontinuities at the grain boundaries could not be removed completely.
