Notes: This is a retrospective study on the use of postoperative opioids in neonates admitted to the surgical intensive care unit at Great Ormond Street over a 5-year period (1980 84). A total of 131 (14%) babies received opioids out of 933 neonates admitted to the unit. The use of opioids increased from 9.7% to 27.2% of admitted cases during the survey period. Postoperative ventilation of the lungs was necessary in 240 (25.7%) cases and 88 (36.6%) of these were given opioids. Four babies initially failed to wean from controlled ventilation as a result of opioid induced respiratory depression. A total of 51 (7.35%) spontaneously breathing neonates received opioids and seven (13.7%) of these developed apnoea or respiratory failure thought to be induced by opioids. The administration of opioids by nurses occurred most frequently in the late evening and early hours of the morning, when medical cover is at its lowest level.

Notes: Laser selective excitation and optical absorption studies of hydrogenated CaF2:0.05% Er3+ crystals have revealed 16 Er3+ ion sites involving H− or D− ion charge compensation. The relative occurrence of these sites can be controlled over a wide range by varying the duration of the hydrogenation treatment. The hydrogenic nature of these sites is established by the observation of local mode absorption lines in the infrared, Er3+ ion electronic line isotope shifts and associated local mode vibronic lines involving the H− and D− ions. Local mode infrared absorption frequencies of four sites are reported for most rare-earth ions. Five new Er3+−F− sites were identified in the laser selective excitation study. For 〈100〉 and 〈111〉 oriented crystals the fluorescence spectra of several of the sites exhibit well-defined polarization which determines their Er3+ ion site symmetries. Symmetry confirmations are also established for the two previously reported single Er3+ ion sites involving fluoride ion compensation. Eleven of the hydrogenic sites reported here are classified into two families, each derived from a single Er3+ ion site of the parent crystal, while three others are attributed to sites of nearly cubic Er3+ ion symmetry. Detailed spectroscopic results for these sites are presented, together with a crystal-field analysis for the C4v symmetry sites and some model assignments.

Notes: Summary Nickel-copper mineralization occurs near the base of a diorite intrusion close to its contact with hornfelsed Ordovician and Silurian shales and greywackes. The principal ore minerals are nickeline, gersdorffite, pyrrhotine, pentlandite and chalcopyrite with minor amounts of molybdenite, tellurobismutite, gold, sphalerite and argentopentlandite. Pyrite, marcasite, violarite and goethite also occur but are interpreted as later alteration products. Much of the pyrrhotine-rich mineralization at the base of the intrusion is in the form of blebs and interstitial aggregates with amphiboles, plagioclase feldspar, biotite, chlorite and quartz. Chalcopyrite-rich and nickeline-gersdorffite-rich mineralization occurs above this and immediately below unmineralized diorite in the form of patches, lenticular masses and stringers along joints and fractures. Whole rock and ore analyses and electron microprobe data on the silicates, sulphides and sulpharsenides are presented. The unmineralized diorite has low SiO2 and high MgO contents compared to typical diorites and relatively high Cr, Ni and Ti trace element values. In the mineralized diorite, platinum-group elements occur in very low concentrations in the pyrrhotineand chalcopyrite-rich assemblages but Pt, Pd and Au show significant enrichment in the nickeline-gersdorffite-rich mineralization. A magmatic origin for the mineralization is proposed rather than formation by hydrothermal solutions or metasomatism.

Notes: Summary Membrane inlet mass spectrometry was used to directly measure the concentrations of CH4 and H2 in a mesophilic (37°C) completely mixed, laboratory scale, anaerobic digester, continuously fed at a retention time of 7 days with a glucose (50 mM) mineral salts medium. When the digester was overloaded by an increase in the influent substrate concentration, equivalent to 15.5 kg (COD) m-3 (digester) day-1 the concentrations of H2 and short chain fatty acids increased with a concomitant decline in the pH: following an initial stimulation methanogenesis was inhibited. Regulation of the H2 signal from the mass spectrometer in a closed feedback loop by controlled addition of carbon source under a potential overload condition, enabled the H2 concentration to the controlled around 1μM and a high steady state rate of methanogenesis of 42 μM min-1 to be maintained; this is equivalent to 1.4 volumes of CH4 per culture volume per day. The hydrogen-dependent control system was also used to prevent inhibition of methanogenesis when the digester was subject to volumetric overloading potentially equivalent to a retention time of 1 day.
