Notes: We evaluated the magnitude of broadening factors of ground-state exciton absorption peaks in In1−xGaxAsyP1−y/InP (x=0.47y) multiple quantum wells (MQW's) with about 10 nm wells. The absorption peaks broadened with a decrease of y. Analyzing the absorption peak broadening with increasing temperature, the thermal broadening factor at 300 K was found to be about 9 meV and composition independent. Analyzing the photoluminescence linewidth at 4.2 K, it was found that composition fluctuations in the well caused an inhomogeneity of the exciton energy level of 4.4 meV for the y=1.0 MQW and 7.5 meV for the y=0.6 MQW, being the greatest contributors to inhomogeneous broadening. We conclude that the exciton absorption peak broadening with a decrease of y is primarily due to the increase of composition fluctuations.

Notes: Magnetic properties of glassy oxide films which exhibit ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity simultaneously above room temperature prepared by reactive rf sputtering are presented. Nominal film composition is the solid solution compound system expressed by (1−x)BiFeO3-x ABO3, x=0–1 where ABO3 denotes ferro- (antiferro-) electric perovskites, such as BaTiO3, PbTiO3, and PbZrO3. Spontaneous magnetization 4πMs for as-deposited films is small behaving paramagnetically and does not show the compositional dependence. After annealing at temperatures of 600–700 °C in either air or PbO atmosphere, considerably large 4πMs exceeding 1 kG appears at the solid solution composition. All samples with large 4πMs are x-ray amorphous and a rapid decrease in 4πMs takes place after annealing at higher temperatures ((approximately-greater-than)800 °C), where still unidentified crystallites are precipitated. Mössbauer absorption spectra were done to understand the origin of ferromagnetism. Besides pronounced magnetic (and/or dielectric) properties, these films have a high transmittance from visible through near-infrared regions, so that they are expected to be useful as optoelectronic device materials.

Notes: Transparent iron-oxide films were fabricated by sol-gel synthesis using a solution of ferric nitrate (III) dissolved in ethylene glycol.1 The solution was kept at 80 °C and stirred constantly in a nitrogen atmosphere. The gel with an appropriate viscosity was spin coated on soft glass plates, then dried and heated in air at various temperatures for 5 h. The films thus prepared are about 0.2 μm thick, amber colored, and especially transparent in the near-infrared region, whose transmittance exceeds 90%. Maximum saturation magnetization 4πMs=0.74 kG [curve (a)] was obtained by annealing at 450 °C, which is still insufficient to use practical application. Reduction heat treatment in a hydrogen atmosphere is found to be very effective to improve magnetic properties: 4πMs is increased to 3 kG [curve (b)], which is about four times as large as the previous one, but the films become semitransparent due to formation of magnetite particles. Original high transmittance recovers by successive annealing in air at 400 °C without any degradation of magnetic properties [curve (c)], where diffraction peaks of maghemite were observed. This strongly suggests that magnetic anisotropy may be arbitrarily controlled by forming linear chains of ferromagnetic particle clusters through reduction heat treatment in a magnetic field. Faraday rotation θF of the samples was also measured. These films are promising as a new type magneto-optic material.

Notes: Improving daily-life habits is considered to be effective in treating obesity. We have examined obesity in regular physical examinations in university students since 1974. In this study, the subjects were 199 students regarded as obese (Broca's index: more than 120%) and 326 non-obese students randomly selected (525 subjects in total) among students who underwent regular physical examinations at Nagoya University, Japan, between 1974 and 1978. Here we report our follow-up survey of obese university students and non-obese individuals who were students of the same university during the same period. This study was carried out for the purpose of clarifying the relationship between changes in lifestyle and body weight 20 years after graduation. Concerning eating behavior, a higher proportion of subjects cared about diet intake in the current non-obese group than in the current obese group (P 〈 0.05). The meal-time in the obese was shorter than that in the non-obese group (P 〈 0.01). Ten percent of subjects in the obese group and 24.4% of subjects in the non-obese group selected class II (moderate) or higher as indicative of the intensity of their daily physical activity. There was a significant difference in distribution between the groups (P 〈 0.05). In the group showing improvement in obesity over time, a higher proportion of subjects cared about diet intake than in the group with continued obesity (P 〈 0.05). Concerning intensity of physical activity, 11.8% of subjects in the group with continued obesity selected class II (moderate) or higher, while 45.5% of subjects in the group showing improvement in obesity chose class II (moderate) or higher. A significant difference in distribution existed between the groups (P 〈 0.01). These findings suggest that the eating behavior of ending meals before feeling satiety and a lifestyle change to enhance the intensity of daily physical activity including walking, even if not having any special sports habits, are effective in decreasing body weight.

Notes: To establish whether MIB-1 and p53 staining are useful for differentiating pilocytic astrocytomas and astrocytomas from anaplastic astrocytomas and glioblastomas. This study was restricted to children and young adults under 30 years of age because of the differences in p53 mutations between paediatric and adult astrocytomas.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods and resultsForty-five astrocytic tumours, including 18 pilocytic astrocytomas, 14 astrocytomas, four anaplastic astrocytomas and nine glioblastomas, from 45 children and young adults, between 1 and 29 years (mean 11 years) of age, were examined pathologically, and sections from paraffin-embedded blocks were used for MIB-1 and p53 immunostaining. The MIB-1 labelling index and the frequency and intensity of p53 staining in both the pilocytic astrocytoma and the astrocytoma group were significantly lower than in the anaplastic astrocytoma plus glioblastoma group (P 〈 0.001). In 11.1% (two of 18) of pilocytic astrocytomas and 42.9% (six of 14) of astrocytomas, immunoreactivity of either MIB-1 or p53 staining was of almost the same intensity as that of anaplastic astrocytomas and glioblastomas. However, in these cases, results using both MIB-1 and p53 stain differed from those for anaplastic astrocytomas and glioblastomas.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉ConclusionsMIB-1 and p53 co-staining is very useful for differentiating pilocytic astrocytomas and astrocytomas from anaplastic astrocytomas and glioblastomas. However, MIB-1 or p53 staining alone cannot differentiate pilocytic astrocytomas and astrocytomas from anaplastic astrocytomas and glioblastomas.

Notes: Abstract. The objective of our study was to clarify the radiologic spectrum of disease entities belonging to the SAPHO syndrome (SAPHO being an acronym for synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis). A retrospective analysis of radiologic data was undertaken to determine the relationship of the osteoarthritic changes seen in palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP, n = 179), acne (n = 3), psoriasis vulgaris (PsV, n = 355), generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP, n = 25), and chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO, n = 4). Osseous changes of PPP, acne, and CRMO overlap each other; 7 PPP, 2 acne, and 3 CRMO patients manifested stenocostoclavicular hyperostosis as well as hyperostosis of the spine, pelvis, and/or femur. These findings were not seen in either PsV or GPP patients. Thirteen PsV and 4 GPP patients had peripheral arthritis and/or symmetrical sacroiliitis, which were not observed in the PPP, acne, and CRMO patients. The PPP, acne, and CRMO patients may be grouped as belonging to the single disease entity, namely SAPHO syndrome. Our findings do not support the inclusion of PsV and GPP in the spectrum of this syndrome.

Notes: Abstract  In sexual reproduction of Closterium ehrenbergii, pairing with the sexual partner cells is the first process observed. A cell migration-inducing activity, specific for mating-type plus (mt+; NIES-228) cells, was detected in the culture medium of mating-type minus (mt–; NIES-229) cells. Light was necessary for production of the active substance by mt– cells and for migration of mt+ cells. The active substance was heat-labile and had an apparent molecular mass of 20 kDa, as determined by gel filtration. A protein of 20 kDa was detected in the active fraction of gel filtration after sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Based on these results, it is proposed that a chemotactic sexual pheromone involved in the formation of sexual pairs of cells is secreted by mt– cells of C. ehrenbergii and is proteinaceous, like other sexual pheromones secreted by Closterium species.
