Notes: Reduced doping concentrations proximate to the active region in single quantum well (Al)GaAs lasers have been used to improve the external quantum efficiency. A substantial enhancement is observed in a structure in which, by design, the mode overlap with the doped confining regions is large. For a structure in which the mode is tightly confined, doping modifications have no measurable effect.

Notes: X-ray photoemission spectroscopy was used to examine the reactivity of clean YBa2Cu3O6.9 and Bi2Ca1+xSr2−xCu2O8+y surfaces with adatoms of vapor-deposited bismuth. For YBa2Cu3O6.9, depositions ≤8 A(ring) of Bi induce O 1s, Cu 2p3/2, and Bi 4f line-shape changes due to BiO bonding, limited oxygen loss from the substrate, partial conversion of Cu2+ to Cu1+, and growth of Bi metal. For coverages greater than 8 A(ring), there is no reaction and only Bi metal growth is observed. For Bi deposition onto Bi1Ca1+xSr2−xCu2O8+y, there is minimal reaction with only subtle O 1s and Cu 2p3/2 line-shape changes and the nucleation and growth of Bi metal starting at low coverages (≥2 A(ring)). Comparison shows that Bi is less reactive than other metals, except Ag and Au, and that Bi2Ca1+xSr2−xCu2O8+y is more stable toward Bi deposition than YBa2Cu3O6.9.

Notes: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to investigate passivation of the high-temperature superconductors YBa2Cu3O7−x and Bi2Ca1+xSr2−xCu2O8+y involving overlayer materials deposited in vacuum onto freshly cleaved surfaces. CaF2 was found to be completely inert and to form uniform overlayers on the surface. Deposition of Bi, Si, and Al in activated oxygen produced oxides and exhibited minimal reaction and disruption of the superconductor surface. In contrast, results for Bi, Si, and Al deposition in nonactivated oxygen or ultrahigh vacuum showed extensive substrate disruption due to surface reactions and oxygen withdrawal. This indicates that the activation technique provides oxygen from the gas phase for oxide formation and facilitates nondisruptive overlayer growth, even for reactive metals.

Notes: Performance of graded-index separate-confinement heterostructure single quantum well lasers especially designed for cw optical-pumping applications is reported and is compared to that of conventional double-heterostructure devices. The quantum well devices have the advantage of lower threshold current, higher slope efficiency, and can be operated at longer cavity lengths, leading to lower diode-series resistance and reduced cooling requirements. Quantum wells of aluminum composition ranging from 6.7% to 12% and thicknesses of 12 and 20 nm were investigated. Useful lasing wavelengths between 780 and 820 nm were achieved.

Notes: The power flow to the DIII-D divertor targets is routinely measured using infrared (IR) thermography. An IR television camera sensitive to radiation in the 8–12-μm range views the divertor region using a set of germanium optics. Digital signal processing is used to extract the desired surface temperature profiles from the analog data ((approximately-equal-to)12 Mbytes) stored on videotape. Inversion of these data using a simple matrix formulation of the inverse heat conduction problem then yields the incident heat flux as a function of space and time. Results from a DIII-D discharge are included.

Notes: In a study of cows’ milk allergy (CMA) in infancy, 135 consecutive challenges were performed on children with a good clinical history of the disorder. Of these, only half of the patients were shown to have the disease. Highly atopic patients responded rapidly to small volumes of milk with acute urticaria, wheezing, stridor and eczema, whereas patients who were relatively non-atopic developed symptoms of eczema, bronchitis and wheezing over several hours or days. In a statistical evaluation of the diagnostic value of skin tests and RAST it was shown for the extracts used in this investigation, and for the population studied, all patients with SPT 〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:09547894:CEA481:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉 4 had CMA. The results highlight the potential diagnostic value of SPT in the identification of children with some forms of CMA if standardized cows’ milk allergen extracts can be prepared.

Notes: In this study 51 children who presented with symptoms of cows’ milk allergy (CMA) were categorized clinically by their response to cows’ milk challenge. Forty-two patients had unequivocal evidence of CMA and nine were milk tolerant. Of the patients with CMA two groups were identified. The first, made up of 32 patients, had immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions to milk associated with both positive skin-prick test (SPT) and RAST. The second group of 10 late reacting patients developed symptoms of CMA over several hours or days; significant increases in irritability, frequency of bowel actions, and rhinitis following milk ingestion were noted in this group. Leucocyte inhibition factor (LIF) produced in response to α-lactalbumin, β-lactoglobulin and α-casein was assessed in the immediate and late reacting CMA patients as well as in the milk-tolerant group. There was no difference in LIF production between the milk-tolerant group and those with immediate reactions. However, these two groups produced less LIF than the late reacting patients for α-lactalbumin (P= 002), α-casein (P= 0.03) and β-lactoglobulin (P= 0.05). A clinical diary score card was found to be a useful instrument to assess the response of non-immediate reactions to milk ingestion.

Notes: In order to test the hypothesis that rotavirus infection leads to IgE hypersensitivity to cows’ milk, evidence of past rotavirus infection, as reflected by the presence of antibodies, was sought in two groups of children with cows’ milk allergy. The groups were defined according to the time to react to milk challenge. In group I there were fifteen children with an adverse reaction within 40 min of milk challenge. The twenty-one children in group II had gastrointestinal reactions between 1 hr and 24 hr after milk challenge. The results showed a higher incidence of antibodies to rotavirus in group II than group I (P 〈 0.05). Although group I patients had significantly higher levels of total and milk-specific IgE antibodies to cows’ milk than those in group II, both patient groups had lower levels of serum IgG, IgA and IgM than a control population. No association between the presence of rotavirus antibodies and IgE hypersensitivity to cows’ milk was found. However, an association between non-IgE milk enteropathy and previous rotavirus antibodies was demonstrated.
