    Notes: High-resolution x-ray photoemission has been used to study the reaction between vapor deposited Ti and La1.85Sr0.15CuO4. For low Ti coverages we observe a sharp decrease in electron emission within ∼2 eV of the Fermi level because of disruption of hybrid Cu 3dx2−y2-O 2px,y orbitals, the loss of metallic character of the surface region, and the loss of superconductivity. Ti 2p and O 1s core level results show that oxygen is removed from the superconductor to form TiO2 at low coverages. At higher coverage, the reaction becomes diffusion limited; a Ti-rich oxide or solution grows. The Cu 2p3/2 emission shows that oxygen withdrawal rapidly reduces the Cu2+ configuration. Ti metal forms after ∼10 A(ring) deposition.

    Notes: X-ray photoemission results make it possible to compare Ti adatom reactivity with clean surfaces of CuO, Y2BaCuO5, and YBa2Cu3O7−x. Changes in the Ti 2p1/2,3/2 and O 1s core level emission during overlayer growth are related to surface reactions between the Ti adatoms and oxygen atoms leached from the substrates. The results show the growth of a TiO2-like reaction species at initial Ti depositions, the formation of Ti suboxides at intermediate coverages, and the onset of metallic behavior at higher Ti coverages. The Ti-O reaction products grow in a layer-by-layer fashion initially, but Ti metal overlayer growth occurs as clusters on this Ti-O reacted region. Substrate modifications associated with Ti-O reactions result in significant changes in the chemical environments of Cu, Ba, and Y for Y2BaCuO5 and YBa2Cu3O7−x.

    Notes: Interface reactions of adatoms of Y, Ba, Cu, and Ti with ordered and disordered SrTiO3 (100) surfaces were examined with x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, Auger spectroscopy, and low-energy electron diffraction. Atomic distributions for these interfaces before and after annealing at 500 °C were determined using Ar ion sputter depth profiling. We observed strong reactions of Y and Ba with O extracted from the substrate for both ordered and disordered SrTiO3, with the strongest interactions occurring for Y on the disordered surface. These reactions were diffusion limited at 300 K, and the growth of a metal overlayer was observed with increasing coverage. Comparison of these results to those for Ti/SrTiO3 made it possible to determine the extent of the reactions and the reaction products. At elevated temperatures, more extended out-diffusion of O from the substrate into the overlayer was observed, completing the conversion to the respective metal oxides. In contrast, Cu deposited on SrTiO3 formed clusters on the surface and did not react with the substrate. O out-diffusion was not observed for the Cu overlayer at elevated temperatures, but clustering was enhanced. The implications of these results are discussed in terms of Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductor synthesis on SrTiO3.

    Notes: X-ray photoemission spectroscopy was used to examine the reactivity of clean YBa2Cu3O6.9 and Bi2Ca1+xSr2−xCu2O8+y surfaces with adatoms of vapor-deposited bismuth. For YBa2Cu3O6.9, depositions ≤8 A(ring) of Bi induce O 1s, Cu 2p3/2, and Bi 4f line-shape changes due to BiO bonding, limited oxygen loss from the substrate, partial conversion of Cu2+ to Cu1+, and growth of Bi metal. For coverages greater than 8 A(ring), there is no reaction and only Bi metal growth is observed. For Bi deposition onto Bi1Ca1+xSr2−xCu2O8+y, there is minimal reaction with only subtle O 1s and Cu 2p3/2 line-shape changes and the nucleation and growth of Bi metal starting at low coverages (≥2 A(ring)). Comparison shows that Bi is less reactive than other metals, except Ag and Au, and that Bi2Ca1+xSr2−xCu2O8+y is more stable toward Bi deposition than YBa2Cu3O6.9.

    Notes: High-resolution x-ray photoemission and inverse photoemission have been used to study the microscopic formation of Au overlayers on the high Tc superconductor La1.85Sr0.15CuO4. Our results indicate that Au does not induce disruption or surface reaction, unlike the reactive transition metals. The electronic states of the superconductor are attenuated as the Au overlayer covers the surface. We conclude that Au is a promising material for metallization and for passivation.

    Notes: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to investigate passivation of the high-temperature superconductors YBa2Cu3O7−x and Bi2Ca1+xSr2−xCu2O8+y involving overlayer materials deposited in vacuum onto freshly cleaved surfaces. CaF2 was found to be completely inert and to form uniform overlayers on the surface. Deposition of Bi, Si, and Al in activated oxygen produced oxides and exhibited minimal reaction and disruption of the superconductor surface. In contrast, results for Bi, Si, and Al deposition in nonactivated oxygen or ultrahigh vacuum showed extensive substrate disruption due to surface reactions and oxygen withdrawal. This indicates that the activation technique provides oxygen from the gas phase for oxide formation and facilitates nondisruptive overlayer growth, even for reactive metals.

    Notes: Metal/single-crystal-silicide interface evolution has been examined for Ti/MoSi2 (001) using high-resolution synchrotron radiation and x-ray photoemission. Reaction between Ti and Si was observed for temperatures 300≤T≤873 K. At 300 K, it was limited to Ti interaction with the single Si layer terminating the cleaved MoSi2 (001) surface. Analysis of the Si 2p core level line shape showed two different interfacial reaction products with bonding characteristics of TiSi and a disordered solution of Si in Ti. Interfacial development was dominated by Si outdiffusion at higher temperatures with Si enrichment of the overlayer but not conversion to a silicide.

    Notes: Abstract An in vivo model system to study the initiation of embryo development is presented. From the so-called Salmon system of wheat (alloplasmic lines with a 1BL-1RS chromosome translocation), three completely isogenic and homozygous lines were produced by selection for uniformity in about 20 selfing/backcross generations as well as between sublines of doubled haploids. The line (aestivum)-Salmon is male fertile and sexual. The lines (caudata)-Salmon and (kotschyi)-Salmon are male sterile and have a parthenogenetic capacity of about 90%. The expression of nuclear-cytoplasmic male sterility is different for the two parthenogenetic lines. The initiation of autonomous embryo development at defined developmental stages of the ovaries and the maximum degree of parthenogenesis are identical in both parthenogenetic lines as proved by the auxin test and progeny analyses. The protein patterns from ovary extracts of the three isogenic lines were identical for more than 200 spots of 2-D polyacrylamide gels, confirming their homogeneity. However, one protein (P 115.1) was found 3 days before and during anthesis only in ovaries of the parthenogenetic lines. It seems to be involved in the initiation of parthenogenesis.
