    Notes: To determine intrinsic properties of the newly discovered Bi-Ca-Sr-Cu-O high Tc superconductors, single crystals are necessary. Compositions in this system have been heat treated to survey the melting temperatures and phase field in which superconductivity is detected. The nucleation and growth of the 85 K phase from the melted composition Bi4Ca3Sr3Cu4O16+x is observed to be a kinetically slow process which can be precluded by a sufficiently rapid quench, but post-anneals produce the 85 and 110 K phases in the quenched material. The melted composition (23% Bi2O3-46% CaO,SrO-31% CuO), after subsequent slow cooling, results in large discrete crystals of the 85 K superconducting phase and a residual flux.

    Notes: We have investigated the effect of the post-deposition processing ambient on the preparation of YBa2Cu3O7−x thin films from a BaF2 source. The role of H2O vapor during the high-temperature anneal is understood through a thermodynamic analysis of the fluorine removal reaction. The role of a HF getter (e.g., SiO2) is understood through the same type of analysis. We have demonstrated that a zero resistance transition temperature at 77 K can be obtained for an annealing temperature as low as 690 °C for films deposited on SrTiO3 substrates by increasing the PH2O and decreasing PHF during the high-temperature soak cycle.

    Notes: Abstract The authors report the case of a 2-year-old infant who presented with paroxysm and short changes characterized by acute drowsiness, cold sweats, ocular reversion, facial cyanosis, and bradycardia. Between these attacks, the condition was normal, suggesting diencephalic seizures. Over 2 months five fits were observed by the parents when some to-and-fro bobbing of the head onto the trunk appeared during drowsiness. One electroencephalogram was normal without a slow background or spikes discharges. As the skull radiographs showed erosion of the jugum and chronic intracranial hypertension features, a CT scan was performed and showed hydrocephalus associated with a congenital suprasellar cyst. The cyst was opened into basal cisterns with cystoperitoneal shunt. The histological examination revealed that it was an arachnoid cyst. Six months later, the infant was free of diencephalic seizures and head bobbing. Thus, we can assert that there was a direct relationship between this cyst and the diencephalic seizures. From this case, the authors make a review of the clinical features of diencephalic epilepsy, and their different causes and show that both diencephalic epilepsy and suprasellar arachnoid cysts are not common.

    Notes: Abstract Levels of SP-like immunoreactivity were assessed by enzyme immunoassay in exudates induced in the rat by intrapleural injection of either calcium pyrophosphate (CaPP) or carrageenan. SP-like levels increased during the first hour, up to approximately 2 ng/ml, and remained significantly higher than control values from 1 to 6 h after the induction of pleurisy by CaPP. With carrageenan as the irritant, SP-like levels rose during the first 4 h, up to 3 ng/ml, and remained significantly higher than control values from 4 to 24 h. In terms of the total volume of exudate induced by carrageenan, total amounts increased up to 8 ng/rat at 16 h after the beginning of the reaction. Our data demonstrate a detectable release of SP-like material in these pleural exudates and suggest its involvement in the inflammatory response, either directly, or through other mediators, or simply by acting on nociceptive fibers and inducing vascular changes.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of oral administration of various doses of indomethacin, ibuprofen, and flurbiprofen were studied in acute nonimmune pleurisy induced by calcium pyrophosphate crystals (CaPP) in the rat. Drug effects on pleurisy development, as measured by the pleural fluid volume, the number of emigrating leukocytes, and the in vitro oxygen uptake and hydrogen peroxide production of elicited polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) were investigated. Indomethacin (1.5, 3, and 6 mg/kg) induced a dose-dependent reduction of both exudate volume and number of emigrating leukocytes which reached approximately 50% of control values. A similar inhibition of these two inflammation parameters was observed for the three doses of ibuprofen (6, 18, and 54 mg/kg) and flurbiprofen (0.5, 1.5, and 4.5 mg/kg). The ability of elicited neutrophils to consume oxygen upon stimulation by serum-treated zymosan particles (STZ) was not altered in PMNs derived from animals treated with indomethacin or flurbiprofen, whereas a 35% decrease was induced by ibuprofen. Ibuprofen, but not indomethacin or flurbiprofen, also impaired STZ-induced PMN production of hydrogen peroxide. Furthermore, this inhibition was inversely related to ibuprofen doses. These data indicate that, in addition to their common properties to reduce leukocyte emigration at inflammatory sites, certain NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, but not flurbiprofen or indomethacin, impair particle-induced oxygen-dependent killing activities of elicited PMNs.

    Notes: Abstract The molar volumes of three binuclear copper (II) alkanoates (cupric octadecanoate, docosanoate, and tetracosanoate) were measured over the temperature range 30°–200 °C, which encompasses their phase transition to a columnar mesophase. A sharp volume increase in a narrow temperature interval about the transition was observed, consistent with a first-order phase transition. Values obtained for the partial molar volume of a methylene group in the columnar mesophase (16.9±0.3 cm3/mol) are between those for crystalline paraffins and for other smectic or discotic mesogens, respectively, indicating a disordered state, but not a complete fusion, of the aliphatic chains of the copper soaps in their columnar mesophase. The stacking period of the binuclear copper complexes in a column was derived from a combination of dilatometric and X-ray data. Its value, 4.64±0.08 Å, is independent of the chain length of the complex and of the temperature.
