    Notes: A novel magnetostriction measurement tool is developed for a thin soft-magnetic film on a nonmagnetostrictive substrate. The sensitivity is at least an order of magnitude better than prior art, and is adequate to measure a magnetostriction coefficient as small as 10−7–10−8 for a film as thin as 30 nm on a glass wafer of thickness 200 μm. To make a measurement, the sample wafer in the form of a rectangle is clamped near an edge, and a saturating rotating magnetic field of constant amplitude is applied in its plane; this rotating field causes the film to expand/contract in the direction of magnetization for a positive/negative magnetostriction coefficient and results in a periodic "warpage'' of the sample at a frequency that is twice the rotation frequency of the field. A continuous helium-neon laser beam incident on the sample is used to sense this small periodic warpage. The reflected laser beam is detected by a position sensor; its output is normalized to the laser beam intensity to account for intensity fluctuation effects, and then fed to a phase-sensitive lock-in amplifier that is referenced to twice the field rotation frequency. This tool has been developed, characterized, optimized for noise reduction by suitable selection of frequencies and suspension techniques, and applied to measure the saturated magnetostriction coefficients of ultrathin soft-magnetic Permalloy-based films.

    Notes: Moisture adsorbed on a gold, copper, or silicon surface in atmospheric conditions can be detected by using a pulsed laser-induced heating of the surface (transient temperature rise (approximately-less-than)100 °C), and a continuous probe laser beam parallel to the surface to detect the transient refractive-index changes. The probe deflection signal can be interpreted as due to a compression pulse (produced by the heating and moisture desorption at the sample surface), followed by a rarefraction (produced by cooling and diffusional moisture readsorption). Using this interpretation of the transient probe deflection signal, the amount of moisture adsorbed at the samples for various surface temperatures and absolute moisture content in an ambient gas (e.g., nitrogen) can be monitored.

    Notes: Summary The natural killer (NK) cell activity of mice in the peritoneal cavity is very low or undetectable and testing peritoneal NK cells is a useful model for studying the influence of activating substances upon local injection. Injection of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) at doses of 10–200 ng caused a marked activation of NK cell activity which was maximal after 24 h and declined rapidly on day 2. A similar effect was observed when interferons alpha and beta were injected, and there were additive results when interferon was injected together with TNF. The NK cell nature of the effector cells activated by TNF was substantiated by the finding that previous injection with anti-asialo GM 1 antibody prevented activation. Interferon could not be detected in the peritoneal wash fluid after injection of TNF suggesting interferon-independent activation. In further experiments after i.p. injection of TNF peritoneal exudate cells (PECs) only killed YAC-1 targets in a 4-h assay. There was no additional killing in an 18-h assay towards neither YAC-1 cells or P815 cells, suggesting that macrophages were not involved. Furthermore TNF was also active in vitro by activating NK cells in isolated human peripheral blood cells. However in the PECs stimulated in vitro no significant induction of cytotoxic capacities by TNF was measured. Our data suggest that the action of TNF is not restricted to the lysis of tumor cells but can also induce immunological properties in the host defense against virus infections and neoplasms.

    Notes: Summary By using a plethora of region-specific antisera, this light microscopic immunohistochemical study revealed that derivatives from the three opioid precursors, i.e. proenkephalin, prodynorphin and proopiomelanocortin are differentially distributed in the pineal gland of guinea pig. Various molecular forms of immunoreactive opioid peptides derived from proenkephalin or prodynorphin were prosent in a minority of pinealocytes as well as in nerves. In contrast to this dual distribution pattern of opioid-active peptides, the opioid-inactive derivative from proopiomelanocortin, alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone, was exclusively present in a large proportion of pinealocytes. A multiple and differential origin and function of opioidergic pineal innervation involving sympathetic, parasympathetic and sensory components is suggested. α-MSH is proposed as a pineal hormone which may act in concert with melatonin to regulate pineal rhythms or may function like MSH of pituitary origin.

    Notes: Summary We present the results of light microscopic, available electron microscopic and immunohistochemical investigations of 79 adenocarcinomas occurring in the noses of wood workers following exposure to beechwood and oakwood dust. Three types of adenocarcinomas can be differentiated. The most frequently occurring form is the papillary tubular cylinder cell adenocarcinoma, while the mucus-producing alveolar goblet cell adenocarcinoma and signet ring cell adenocarcinoma are rarer types. Transitional stages suggest the common origin of these tumors from mucus-secreting cylinder cells of the respiratory epithelium. The grade of differentiation and the tumor type are definitely related to the prognosis of these tumors. Similar to the tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry prove the existence of a number of various polypeptide hormones, the significance of which has not yet been clarified.

    Notes: Abstract The production cross sections for the Λ, Σ0, Ξ−, Σ0 (1385), Ξ0 (1530) and Ω− hyperons have been measured, both in the continuum and in direct ϒ decays. Baryon rates in direct ϒ decays are enhanced by a factor of 2.5 or more compared to the continuum. Such a large baryon enhancement cannot be explained by standard fragmentation models. The strangeness suppression for baryons and mesons turns out to be the same. A strong suppression of spin 3/2 states is observed.

    Notes: Aspen (Populus tremuloides) and black cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa) organosolv pulps produced in a wide range of solvent composition (between 30 and 70% by volume of methanol) and catalysts (H2SO4 and H3PO4) such that the cooking liquor pH ≤ 3 are easily digested by enzymes. The total yields of hydrolysis residues (pulps) are in the 40-60% range; the acid-catalyzed delignification followed by enzyme hydrolysis can generate 70-88% of the original six-carbon sugars contained in the wood. Glucomannan and arablnogalactan are dissolved into the pulping liquor in the pH range of 2-4.5. Lower pH (≤3) leads to additional solubilization of six-carbon sugars. These sugars may be fermented directly. From the insoluble hydrolysis residues, 36-41% conversions of wood into fermentable sugars were obtained after enzyme hydrolysis; the starting feedstocks contain 50.8 and 46.6% hexosans, respectively, for aspen and black cotton-wood. The kinetics of enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose can be formally treated as two simultaneous pseudo-first-order reactions in which fast and slow hydrolyses of cellulose occur. Correlations between the glucan digestibility and the effect of the pretreatment have been made. The higher residual xylan content reduces the amount of the rapidly hydrolyzable glucan fraction and lowers the glucan digestibility. The proposed simple kinetic treatment is very helpful in assessing the effect of the pretreatment on pulp enzyme hydrolyzability.

    Notes: Synthesis and Structure Elucidation of Sulfamoyl GuanidinesA series of sulfamoyl guanidines 2a--hyphen;p and 4 was synthesized by addition of sulfurylchloride to dialkylcyanoamides and subsequent aminolysis of the N,N-dialkyl-N′-chlorosulfonyl-chloroformamidines with primary or secondary amines. Advantageously, the aminolysis can be performed with trimethylsilylamines as amine component by continuous withdrawing of the formed trimethylchlorosilane.Phase transfer catalyzed methylation led to a specific alkylation of the sulfamoyl group to form the 2-(aryl-methyl-sulfamoyl)-guanidines (5a--hyphen;5g, 5h). All compounds were characterized by m.s.-, i.r.-, 1H-n.m.r.- and 13C-n.m.r.-spectra. I.r. and 1H-n.m.r. data show the existence of an intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the guanidine NH group and the SO2 group.
