    Notes: The data system for the advanced toroidal facility (ATF) is a logical extension of the system used for the Impurity Studies Experiment ISX-B. Based on the ISX-B concepts and hardware, it extends them to provide support for long-pulse or steady-state operation of ATF. The system is now network based rather than shared memory based and can dynamically add or remove processors. The hardware consists of a pair of VAX 8700 CPUs and an assortment of MicroVAX front ends. This hardware acquires all data, generates all control waveforms, and provides trending and logging services for the safety interlock and control systems. These systems are based on programmable logic controllers (PLCs) which are independent of the data system. The software consists of three major components: a master scheduling and monitoring system (SAMS) that provides synchronizing services and allocates files and memory; a signal-based data and file management package (DMG) that provides data access services; and the ORNL CAMAC driver package. All diagnostics are supported by data acquisition and analysis software (either generic or specialized) that is based on and shared by these services.

    Notes: Summary This paper discusses the computation of multiple solutions of various discretizations of the steady state incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Solution paths (α,R) satisfying the discrete system of equationsH(α,R)=0, where α represents the discrete flow field andR is the Reynolds number, are computed using a pseudo arc-length continuation procedure. For flows over the back end of an axially symmetric body with a cusped tail in a coaxial circular cylinder, the solution paths often exhibit “hairpin” turning points. Dependence of the paths on the mesh spacing and various selections for the discretizations of the convective and diffusive terms are presented.

    Notes: Conclusion The infinitesimal methods commonly used in the 17th and 18th centuries to solve analytical problems had a great deal of elegance and intuitive appeal. But the notion of infinitesimal itself was flawed by contradictions. These arose as a result of attempting to representchange in terms ofstatic conceptions. Now, one may regard infinitesimals as the residual traces of change after the process of change has been terminated. The difficulty was that these residual traces could not logically coexist with the static quantities traditionally employed by mathematics. The solution to this difficulty, as it turns out, is to regard these quantities asalso being subject to (a form of) change, for then they will have the same nature as the infinitesimals representing the residual traces of change, and will become,ipso facto, compatible with these latter. In fact, the category-theoretic models which realize the Principle of Infinitesimal Linearity may themselves be regarded as representations of a general concept of variation (cf. Bell (1986)). While the static set-theoretical models represent change or motion by making a detour through the actual (but static) infinite, the varying category-theoretic models enable such change to be representeddirectly, thus permitting the introduction of geometric infinitesimals and, as we have attempted to demonstrate in this paper, the virtually complete incorporation of the methods of the early calculus. It is surely a remarkable — even an ironic — fact that the contradiction between the flux of the objective world and the stasis of mathematical entities has found its resolution in category theory, a branch of mathematics commonly, and, as one now sees, mistakenly, regarded as the summit of gratuitous abstraction.

    Notes: Summary The variation of parameters for tests at high collision velocities during several years of experiment on dynamic plasticity at finite strain provided, as a by-product, a large collection of data from specimens that underwent dynamic plastic buckling. After efforts to correlate these observations with extant flexural analyses proved unsuccessful, the data are found to be unified when referred to a modification of the 19th century Euler-Engesser theory for the initiation of buckling in nonlinear struts. In the modification, the “fixed ends” propagate with the maximum stress of the plastic wave. This “fixity” is the subject of a new series of buckling experiments included in the present study.

    Notes: The static delamination behavior of graphite/epoxy composite specimens subjected to mode I tensile opening (using UDCBUniform double cantilever beam. specimens), and pure mode II shear loading (using ENFEnd-notched flexural. specimens) were studied. The graphite epoxy composites for the study were made from commercially treated fibers, with and without an electropolymerized interlayer. The mode I fracture energy (GIC) was found to be significantly higher (more than 50 percent) for the coated fibers. However, this improvement was accompanied by a high reduction (more than 3 times) in the mode II fracture energy (GIIC). This effect is apparently related to poor adhesion between the interlayer and the epoxy resin, which may be corrected by use of a “top layer” of appropriate composition to form chemical bonds between the phases. The fracture toughness (KIC) of composites made with commercially treated fibers was also evaluated, using double side-notched specimens.

    Notes: Diepoxides and in-chain carbonate groups react readily in the presence of quarternary ammonium salts, although reaction is not observed without this catalyst. Two moles of epoxide react with each mole of carbonate. When diepoxides and polycarbonates are reacted, a three-dimensional network of chains crosslinked with carbonate groups is produced; the crosslink density is controlled by adjusting the epoxy/carbonate ratio. Tertiary amines and alkoxides also catalyze the epoxy/carbonate reaction, but these have the undesirable attribute of promoting epoxy polymerization. The presence of oligocarbonates accelerates the epoxy-amine reaction.
