Abstract Diffusion coefficients of C2 radicals in Ar and H2 were determined experimentally for the first time. The C2 radicals were generated by a multi-photon laser photolysis and the spatial behaviour was observed by laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. Spatial distributions measured were compared with a theory to determine diffusion coefficients. It is shown that the present technique is suitable to measure diffusion coefficients of short-lived radicals that are difficult to measure by any other means.
