Notes: Formation of a straight helical magnetic field is attempted by using ferromagnetic material. A shaped ferromagnetic cylinder, which modifies an external uniform magnetic field, is demonstrated to realize an l=3 helical magnetic field that is suitable for plasma experiments. The measured values for the angle of rotational transform and shear length agree with the predictions within a factor of 2, which is calculated without taking account of the self-demagnetization. This indicates that a rough configuration of magnetic field can be obtained even if the self-demagnetization is not known accurately. It is also suggested that this method is widely applicable to the formation of other complicated configurations of magnetic field.

Notes: Abstract This paper deals with a new anti-fouling method by hydrogen peroxide with ferrous ion for a marine cooling water system. Emphasis is on macrofouling which decreased less than 10% of the amount of the control after the chemical treatment of seawater. The duration of the chemical effectiveness was examined with 60-m unheated model channels from April to July 1986. Since hydrogen peroxide and ferrous ion were reduced by 20% and 40%, respectively, within 10 min, the retention period of seawater in the system is necessary to extrapolate test results from pilot studies to actual application. It is suggested that the active oxygen radical produced in seawater from the reaction of hydrogen peroxide with ferrous ion, affects attachment and subsequent growth of sedentary larvae of marine animals. The results indicated that for barnacles, the chemicals did not disturb the settling behavior of the cyprid, but inhibited the growth of the young after settling. For mussels, on the other hand, which were collected offshore of Tokushima Prefecture from March to June 1986, the chemicals hampered the pelagic pediveliger or plantigrade substantially during the exploratory phase.

Notes: Abstract In order to establish small quadrupole splittings the double resonance NMR/ON method was applied to185IrNi and188IrFe at 7 and 8.6 mK, respectively. With r.f. power applied at the strongest resonance frequency, a second frequency was used to simultaneously investigate the second resonance component, where the splitting is caused by an electric quadrupole interaction. Enhanced quadrupole subresonances were observed. In these experiments we have demonstrated the powerful capability of the double resonance NMR/ON method to observe a small quadrupole interaction when the resulting subresonances are well resolved.

Notes: An apparatus for continuous preparative method of polymer beads was investigated. Monomer droplets formed in glycerol were continuously introduced to a rotating glass tube which was filled with warmed glycerol and polymerized. Polymer beads of around 4 mm diameter were obtained. As an application of the polymer beads, urease was immobilized on the beads and their properties were evaluated. Macroreticular type of beads prepared with a mixture of maleic anhydride, styrene, and divinylbenzene showed the highest enzymatic activity among the beads tested, and the urease immobilized beads could be successfully applied for determination of blood urea nitrogen in human sera.

Notes: Abstract The quadrupole splitting of oriented188Ir in iron was studied at 8.6 mK using a double resonance NMR-ON method. With r.f. power applied at the strongest resonance frequency, a second frequency was used to simultaneously investigate the second resonance component, where the splitting is caused by an electric quadrupole interaction. The electric hyperfine splitting frequency νQ=e 2 qQ/h was measured to be 3.37(11) MHz. With the known electric field gradient of −0.283(6)×1017 V/cm2 at Ir in iron, the spectroscopic quadrupole moment of188Ir was deduced to be 0.492(26)b. The present results show that the double resonance method is a powerful tool in establishing the quadrupole splitting, if it leads to well-resolved NMR-ON resonance components.
