    Notes: The infection of pea (Pisum sativum) by Colletotrichum truncatum was studied by light and electron microscopy. These investigations were facilitated by use of an Argenteum pea mutant, which has a readily detachable epidermis. Infection pegs emerging from appressoria penetrated epidermal cells directly. Large intracellular primary hyphae formed a dense stromatic mycelium confined within a single epidermal cell. Primary mycelia gave rise to thinner secondary hyphae which radiated into surrounding cells and caused extensive wall dissolution. Melanized sclerotia developed in the centre of chlorotic water-soaked lesions. Acervuli were not observed. Epidermal cells survived initial penetration by primary hyphae, as shown by their ability to plasmolyse and accumulate Neutral red, but all infected cells were dead when the secondary hyphae had formed. Six cultivars of pea were susceptible, but seven other legumes were resistant. A single isoform of polygalacturonase with a pI of 8·3 and apparent Mr of 40000 was purified from culture filtrates and the TV-terminal amino acid sequence determined. The relevance of the results to the taxonomy of C. truncatum and the relationships between infection process and host range are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes and evaluates a thermal transient anemometer, a novel fluid flow (mass flux) measuring device having a thermocouple probe which is utilized to measure the change in temperature over a period of time to provide a measure of fluid flow velocity. The thermocouple probe (sensor) is periodically heated by the application of an electrical pulse and its rate of cooling between pulses is related to the local mean flow velocity. The theory of operation, device description, comparison with other similar fluid flow devices, and laboratory tests including measurements under different turbulence levels and different fluid temperatures are presented and discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Whole-rock (major- and trace-element) and mineral chemical data are presented for basaltic rocks from the main evolutionary stages of the Kurile island arc, NW Pacific. An outer, inactive arc contains a Cretaceous-Lower Tertiary sequence of tholeiitic, calcalkaline and shoshonitic basalts. The main arc (Miocene-Quaternary) is dominated by weakly tholeiitic, with lesser, alkalic basalts. The mineralogy of Kuriles basalts is characterised by An-rich plagioclases, a continuous transition from chromites to titanomagnetites, pyroxenes with low Fe3+ contents and without strong Fe-enrichment, abundance of groundmass pigeonites and the absence of amphiboles. There is an increase in K2O contents both along-arc (northwards) and towards the reararc side. The basalts show an exceptionally wide but continuous range of K2O contents (0.1–4.7%) which correlate with other LIL element contents. Tholeiitic basalts with low LIL element contents, La/Yb and Th/U, but high K/ Rb, P2O5/La and Zr/Nb were derived from depleted, lherzolitic mantle which had suffered fluid metasomatism by K, Rb, Cs, Sr, Ba, Pb and H2O only. Alkali basalts are also thought to be derived from depleted mantle but melt metasomatism involved addition of all LIL elements to a garnet lherzolite mantle. The Kuriles basalts and their mantle sources range continuously between these two end-member compositions. The metasomatic fluids/melts were probably released by early dehydration and later melting within subducted oceanic lithosphere though the process is not adequately constrained.

    Notes: Abstract Transmission electron microscopy has been used to determine the composition and characterize the molecular structure of the early calcium silicate hydrates formed in the paste hydration of 3CaO · SiO2. The initial surface hydrates were found to have a wide range of CaO/SiO2 compositions, consistent with the rapid and variable rate of dissolution of Ca2+ ions from only specific reactive surface sites. The very early surface hydrates appear disordered on a 1 nm scale. At later ages these become microheterogeneous, with more structurally ordered sheet-like fragments and regions developing within the disordered regions. Discrete 3 nm long and 1 nm thick fragments and more structurally ordered assemblies of these were observed. The basic molecular core structure was found to be a 1 nm thick sheet consisting of a protonated CaO x polyhedral layer sandwiched between short-chain silicate groups. In these paste hydrates, this layer extends for only 3 nm before disordering recurs.

    Notes: Abstract We examined data from a large cohort of homosexual and heterosexual females and males concerning their siblings' sexual orientations. As in previous studies, both male and female homosexuality were familial. Homosexual females had an excess of homosexual brothers compared to heteroxual subjects, thus providing evidence that similar familial factors influence both male and female homosexuality. Furthermore, despite the large sample size, homosexual females and males did not differ significantly from each other in their proportions of either homosexual sisters or homosexual brothers. Thus, results were most consistent with the possibility that similar familial factors influence male and female sexual orientation. However, because results conflicted with those of some other studies, and because siblings' sexual orientations were obtained in a manner likely to yield more errors than in these other, smaller studies, further work is needed using large samples and more careful methods before the degree of cofamiliality of male and female homosexuality can be resolved definitively. We also examined whether some parental influences comprised shared environmental effects on sexual orientation. Scales attempting to measure such influences failed to distinguish subjects with homosexual siblings from subjects with only heterosexual siblings and, thus, did not appear to measure shared environmental determinants of sexual orientation.

    Notes: Abstract An in vitro growth system was used to determine the virulence of two samples of Striga gesnerioides from Zakpota in southern Benin. Cowpea variety B301, previously considered resistant to all races of S. gesnerioides, was susceptible to both samples of the parasite. Two other cowpea varieties, 58–57 and IT81D-994, were totally resistant. Resistance in 58–57 was associated with a hypersensitive necrosis of infected roots, whilst IT81D-994 supported production of small S. gesnerioides tubercles with stems which failed to develop. Striga gesnerioides from southern Benin is the fourth race of the parasite to be identified, and the first with virulence on variety B301. The implications for breeding cowpeas with resistance to S. gesnerioides are discussed.
