    Notes: A rapid growth of magnetic fluctuations resulting from the m=1 and m=2 modes and succeeding stop of rotation of these modes have been found as the precursor phenomena of current termination in the STP-3(M) [Trans. Inst. Elec. Eng. Jpn. 107-B, 469 (1987)] reversed field pinch. By deepening the field reversal at the wall, these precursors disappear and the current duration becomes much longer. It is found that sudden current termination is caused by a rapid growth of resistive tearing modes mainly because of nonlinear coupling of the m=1 mode.

    Notes: The lipid content of human sweat was determined in thermally induced sweat collected over a Vaseline® or silicone barrier placed on the skin (clean sweat) and in sweat scraped from the skin surface without a barrier coating (scraped sweat). Lipids were extracted from concentrated sweat samples into chloroform:methanol and estimated by thin-layer chromatography in conjunction with photodensitometry. Scraped sweat contained 4 to 10 times more lipid than clean sweat and included cholesterol sulphate and ceramides resembling those found in the stratum corneum. In contrast, clean sweat contained only small amounts of free fatty acids and sterol. A marked individual and daily variation in sweat lipid content was also noted. The study indicates the importance of avoiding epidermal contamination when collecting sweat and the usefulness of our sweat collection method.

    Notes: Summary The effect of dibutyryladenosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate (dibutyryl cAMP) on the expression of glutathione S-transferase placental type (GST-P) was examined in rat glioma cell line using an immunohistochemical technique. Cultured T9 glioma cells were negative for GST-P activity under normal conditions. However, treatment with 1 mM dibutyryl cAMP produced GST-P expression in about 50% of the cells, as well as some morphological changes. The expression of GST-P was increased with addition of dibutyryl cAMP together with 1 μg/ml allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) or 0.1 μg/ml benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC). With these combinated treatments, almost all cultured cells showed a strong positive reaction for GST-P, although AITC or BITC alone elicited GST-P in only 5% of the cultured cells. The results of the present study indicate that dibutyryl cAMP causes functional as well as morphological differentiation of T9 glioma cells.

    Notes: Abstract On January 29ty, 1986, the third largest gas outburst in Japan took place at Sunagawa Coal Mine, which is the only hydraulic mine in Japan. It occurred at a face of a cross-cut, just after a coal seam was outcropped by blasting for drivage of the cross-cut. The site of the gas outburst was located 1,180 m below the surface. No workers were injured, but the cross-cut was plugged with 1,600 m3 of coal fragments extending over 100 m behind the face and 60,000 m3 of methane gas was emitted. The site of the gas outburst was investigated in detail to clarify the geological features. A normal and a reverse fault existed at the site. The area of the ejected zone was about 400 m2 and extended upward along the normal fault. The shape of the ejected zone suggests a great role of the normal fault on the gas outburst. Digital seismograms, recorded by a mine-wide seismic array at the coal mine, consisting of 27 microseismic events were used to investigate the gas outburst. Magnitude, seismic energy release, distribution of hypocenter and focal mechanism were analyzed. Taking the shape of the ejected zone together with results of the seismological investigation into consideration, it appears that the seismicity started with left-lateral faulting of the reverse fault and then right-lateral faulting of the normal fault followed. The faulting of the normal fault might be the direct cause and be the predominant mechanism of the gas outburst.

    Notes: Abstract In this study, the jump phenomena and the chaotic motion are investigated. Firstly, it is found that the jump phenomenon occurs under the harmonic excitation by means of computer simulation, and that it occurs under the narrow band random excitation by the averaging method, too. And the conditions for the occurrence of jump phenomena, the probability density function of dynamic response and the resonance curves are shown, respectively. Furthermore, the phenomena are considered from the viewpoint of mean square value, where the statistical linearization method and Liapunov matrix equation are used. Consequently, it seems that the method of equivalent linearization for smooth hysteretic systems under random excitation is versatile and has a great potential in the analysis of hysteretic system, but that it is impertinent to the research of jump phenomena. Secondly, the occurrence of chaotic motion is disscussed by means of the method of mapping and the averaging method. As the results, it is found that the chaotic motion occurs under the various parameters.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of the realistic one-body spectrum is included in calculating the average partial level density, which has been so far obtained assuming degenerate one-body spectrum and GDE for the residual interaction. We show that such partial level densities are obtained by solving the extended saddle point equations which need inputs of the realistic one-body spectrum as well as the second moment of the ensemble. It is seen that the average partial level density is expressed in a convolution form of the partial level density for realistic one-body spectrum with the distribution which describes the effect by the random residual interaction. Calculations numerically performed show the improvement over the previous results. The effect of particle escape on the level density is also investigated and turns out to be practically negligible in precompound reactions.
