    Notes: Storage stability of quail eggs pickled in 50% vinegar solution and subsequently stored in glass jars with pickling solution or in flexible pouches without the solution at mean ambient (24°C, 58% RH) and refrigeration (5°C, 80% RH) temperatures was investigated. Pickle solution, egg white and yolk reached equilibrium pH (4.26–4.31) within 2 and 5 days of ambient and refrigeration storage, respectively. Eggs lost up to 12.2 and 8.8% of their weight within 48 h of ageing under ambient and refrigeration storage, respectively. Polypropylene (PP)-packed pickles suffered maximum weight loss followed by high-density polyethylene (HDPE)-packed eggs; losses were negligible in polyester/foil/polyethylene (PFP) laminate-packed samples. A decrease in phosphatidyl choline and phosphatidyl ethanolamine with simultaneous increase in lysophosphatidyl choline and lysophosphatidyl ethanolamine plus sphingomyelin occurred in pickled eggs during storage. Thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value increased and sensory quality declined with storage time. Aerobic plate counts remained fairly low throughout storage. HDPE (84 μm) was found to be an economic and efficient alternative packaging to glass jar for storage of pickled eggs without the pickle solution for up to 4 and 12 months of ambient and refrigerated storage, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of micro-environment on the growth and yield of cowpea, castor and sorghum was investigated in a 10 m wide alley cropping system. The alleys were formed by Leucaena hedgerows pruned for both fodder and pole production. Below-ground interaction was examined by installing a polythene root barrier between the root systems of crops and Leucaena and by measurements of both soil moisture and root growth. Microclimate measurements included light, wind speed, humidity and temperature. Growth and yield of crops declined from 150 to 30% of sole crop as the distance from the hedgerows decreased from 5 to 0.3 m. The presence of the root barrier had a marked effect on crop growth and completely eliminated any reduction in crop yield, although shading by the hedgerows reached 30 to 85% of full sunlight. There was some modification of the microclimate in the alleys but the changes were not great enough to significantly influence crop yield. The substantial increase in crop yield in the middle of the alleys was explained by the residual effect of a previous hedgerow, removed 12 months previously, on probably the infiltration rate and nutrient status of the soil. These results clearly showed that alley cropping in the semi-arid tropics induces competition for moisture between the trees and crops which may severely reduce crop yield.

    Notes: Abstract Spermine and spermidine were found to be the principal polyamines in the bovine filarial parasiteSetaria cervi, whereas putrescine was observed in very low amounts. Studies conducted on the enzymes of polyamine biosynthesis revealed low activity for S-adenosyl-methionine decarboxylase, questionable and negligible activities for the decarboxylation of ornithine and arginine, and appreciable activity for ornithine aminotransferase. Uptake studies with radiolabeled putrescine, spermidine and spermine showed that these amines are rapidly taken up from the medium by an active uptake process. The uptake was temperature-sensitive and abolished at 0–4°C. The questionable presence of biosynthetic enzymes such as ornithine and arginine decarboxylase and, on the other hand, an effective uptake mechanism indicate that the parasite may depend on the host for its polyamine requirement, thereby indicating a possible target for chemotherapy.

    Notes: Attempts have been made to obtain high impact polystyrene by Lewis-acid-initiated degradation process in the melt reactions of PS and EPDM. It is found that impact strength improves whereas tensile strength decreases. This can be interpreted by the increased solubility of the coupled rubber molecules in the continuous phase.

    Notes: A graft copolymer [chlororubber-20-gp-styrene-acrylonitrile (2 : 1)] has been synthesized by a solution precipitation polymerization technique grafting styrene and acrylonitrile onto chlororubber-20 main chain. The graft copolymer has been characterised by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, and viscometry. It has been blended with PVC by melt mixing using a Brabender plasticorder and extrusiograph. The mechanical properties such as flexural and tensile strengths and impact strength of the blends have been studied to evaluate its performance as an impact modifier. The behavior of PVC-chlororubber-20-gp-styrene-acrylonitrile (2 : 1) blends has also been compared with PVC-chlororubber-20 and PVC-KM-365B (a commercial acrylate modifier) blends. The thermal behavior of these blends has also been studied. It has been found that PVC-chlororubber-20-gp-styrene-acrylonitrile (2 : 1) blends have higher impact strength than PVC-chlororubber-20-gp blends though the PVC-KM-365B blends have the highest impact strength. Based on the authors' previous compatibility studies along with present X-ray diffraction studies and the morphological investigation of the fractured surface by scanning electron microscopy, the mechanical behavior of these blends have been explained in the framework of existing theories. A model has been proposed to account for the optimum dispersion and adhesion of graft polyblends of chlororubber-20 in PVC matrix.

    Notes: A number of graft copolymers of xanthan gum and polyacrylamide have been synthesized by grafting acrylamide onto xanthan gum using the ceric-ion-initiated solution polymerization technique. The effects of various synthesis parameters such as amount of catalyst, reaction time, and ratio of xanthan and acrylamide on drag reduction effectiveness of the graft copolymers have been studied. The scaling up of grafting reaction has been accomplished in 40-L reactor. The drag reduction effectiveness of the graft copolymers is investigated over a wide range of concentrations and Reynolds numbers. It is shown that the maximum drag reduction obtainable in xanthan gum solutions above 300 ppm can be obtained in solutions of graft copolymers at concentrations of 100-150 ppm. The grafting also improves the shear stability at higher Reynolds numbers. The shear stability of the graft copolymers at constant wall stress has been found to be superior to polyacrylamide and the mixtures of polyacrylamide and xanthan gum. In general, the shear stability of graft copolymers and polyacrylamide is shown to increase with concentration. The drag reduction characteristics and shear stability have been discussed in terms of structural features of the graft copolymers. The drag reduction characteristics of the graft copolymers are found to be similar to those of flexible polymers.
