Notes: Abstract Mechanisms of heavy-ion induced nuclear reactions in mass-asymmetric systems were studied by focusing on the nucleon transfer reaction. Excitation functions and projected mean recoil ranges for the target-like products in37-,16O-,14N-, and12C-induced reactions on197Au were measured by means ofγ-ray spectrometry. The energy range studied was near the Coulomb barrier of the systems with incident energies below 10 MeV/u. Nucleon transfer reactions were discussed by distinguishing the products from quasi-elastic transfer (QET) and those from deep inelastic transfer (DIT). The tendency towards equilibration of theN/Z value and the energy damping, which are the characteristic features of DIT, were found in the production of Au isotopes. Observations are consistent with the generally accepted concept that QET takes place along a trajectory near the Coulomb trajectory. QET was made to be connected with the interaction radius and most of the cross section ratios were reproduced well by an extended tunneling model.

Notes: Abstract A new nuclear excitation process,99Tc (γ, γ′)99mTc reaction, was applied for the first time to radioactivation analysis of technetium. Bremsstrahlung irradiation of99Tc samples gave the reaction product99mTc which emits γ-ray measurable with ease by a semiconductor detector. The production rate of99mTc per μg99Tc was linearly correlated with the flux of bremsstrahlung. The detection limit of99Tc was estimated to be nanogram order (0.63 Bq99Tc) under the optimum irradiation condition. Possible interference by100Ru(γ, p)99mTc reaction was also studied, which could be discriminated from the (γ, γ′) reaction by simultaneously occurring98Ru (γ, p)97Ru reaction.

Notes: Abstract Pionic X-ray intensity ratios in chromium compounds were compared with those from muonic X-rays. The ratios were found depending on the μ− capture ratio as on μ− capture. The difference of the ratios between Cr/H2O/6Cl3 and CrCl3 was attributed to the formation of pseudoneutron μ− by interaction of hydrogenic protons during passage of a pion in the hydrated compound.

Notes: Abstract In recoil implantation reaction of51Cr in Cr/acac/3 a polymer component which was sensitive to radiation dose was found. However, a ‘retention’ type component51Cr/acac/3 was not so sensitive to radiation dose. A remarkable dependence of the yield of51Cr/acac/3 on recoil energy was found in the range 102−106 eV in recoil implantation using a thin film technique. This suggests a special role of implantation reaction in solids.

Notes: Abstract A liquid scintillation counting technique was applied to measure the isotope103mRh /half life = 56.12 min/ which is difficult to detect because its γ-ray is of low energy and low emission probability. Tris-/2,4-pentanedionato/ rhodium /III/ /Rh/ acac/3/ was irradiated with bremsstrahlung of accelerated 3.2 MeV electrons by LINAC. The method has given a reliable calibration curve for the determination of103mRh radioactivity below Rh/acac/3 concentrations of 2 mM. The integrated cross section of103Rh/γ,γ′/103mRh determined by this method was found to be 6.8±3.4 μb MeV at 3.2 MeV.

Notes: Abstract Neutron emission has been examined in a system in which the recently reported phenomenon of fracto-fusion might be occurring. No positive evidence has been obtained for cold fusion. The upper limit of the fusion has been 0.0112 events/sec in each specimen containing 0.33 g D2O.

Notes: In Auger electron spectroscopy, the relative sensitivities of elements, which are widely used in quantitative analysis, are primarily obtained by measurement. Nevertheless, it is very tedious to collect all relative elemental sensitivity factors for different primary electron beam energies. In view of this, we have examined methods of deriving the relative sensitivity factor for an arbitrary electron beam energy from one experimental value determined at a set energy. For this calculation, we have to consider the contributions of the ionization cross-section and the electron backscattering factor. Several formulas for the ionization cross-section and the backscattering correction factor have been reported. We have performed experiments to examine their correction accuracy. It was found that when Gryziński's formula is used as the ionization cross-section and Love-Scott's formula as the backscattering correction factor, the difference between calculated sensitivity values and measured values was found to be 〈15% for excitation energies of 〈20 keV.
