Notes: Summary We investigated whether the polymorphism of the β 3-adrenergic receptor (β 3-AR) gene, which is associated with insulin resistance in non-diabetic subjects and an earlier onset of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in Pima Indians, was associated with visceral fat obesity and features of the insulin resistance syndrome in Japanese premenopausal obese women. There was no difference between 131 obese women and 256 control subjects (0.23 vs 0.17, p = 0.112) in the frequency of the Arg64 allele. The visceral fat area measured by computerised tomography scan was greater in homozygous Arg64Arg (172 ± 17 cm2, n = 6) and heterozygous Trp64Arg (178 ± 47 cm2, n = 48) women than in women homozygous for the Trp64Trp (121 ± 46 cm2, n = 77) genotype (p 〈 0.01). This was also reflected by increased total body fat but not by increased body mass index. The association between the Trp64 allele and visceral fat mass by multiple regression analysis, was independent of age, body mass index and total fat mass (p 〈 0.004). Moreover, homozygous carriers of the Arg64 allele had higher systolic blood pressure, higher fasting and post-load glucose and insulin concentrations, higher cholesterol, and triglyceride and lower HDL-cholesterol concentrations than homozygous carriers of the Trp64 allele. Some of these differences were also observed between heterozygous Trp64Arg and homozygous Trp64Trp genotypes (glucose tolerance, insulin and cholesterol concentration). We conclude that in obese women the β 3-AR polymorphism may be used as a genetic marker for visceral fat obesity and the insulin resistance syndrome. [Diabetologia (1997) 40: 200–204]

Notes: Abstract The recently developed High Aspect Ratio Si Etch (HARSE) process is widely used for applications requiring silicon structures with high aspect ratios. This process relies on the alternation of sidewall passivation and silicon etching phases and enables the obtainment of high silicon etch rates and highly anisotropic profiles. This paper reports an innovative approach to improve the sidewall roughness through a multiple-step HARSE process using an ICP system. Unlike the standard HARSE process, the etching conditions for this new process are gradually altered in order to reinforce the silicon etch efficiency as a function of the silicon depth previously etched. Trenches with aspect ratios as high as 40 can be achieved. The sidewall roughness along the entire etching depth is less than 8 nm rms. In comparison with the standard HARSE process in which ripples appear on the trenches sidewall, the sidewall roughness is improved by a factor of 4.

Notes: Summary Physostigmine (less than 0.3 mg/kg, i. v.) was administered systemically to cats, and the effect studied on the electrical activities of trigeminal motoneurones. Physostigmine depressed the monosynaptic reflex evoked by stimulation of the mesencephalic trigeminal tract and recorded from the masseter nerve, and potentiated the inhibition of this monosynaptic reflex by volleys in skin nerves. This effect began within 1–2 min after the injection of physostigmine, reached a maximum at 5–12 min and thereafter decayed gradually. Skin nerve stimulation induced inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (IPSPs) in trigeminal motoneurones. After physostigmine administration these IPSPs were increased in amplitude, and were accompanied by a prolonged, late hyperpolarization. The early phase of this IPSP and the late hyperpolarization showed different sensitivities to the intracellular injection of chloride ions and to polarizing currents, indicating different mechanisms for their production. The effect of physostigmine was blocked by atropine (1 mg/kg, i.v.) but not by dihydro-β-erythroidine (0.5 mg/kg, i.v.).

Notes: Abstract We investigated the histological and molecular characteristics of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) in two siblings (a brother and sister) who did not exhibit respiratory distress at birth but who each developed symptoms during infancy. Histological analysis of lung specimens showed positive staining for surfactant proteins in both patients. The polymerase chain reaction revealed expression of messenger RNA for surfactant protein B (SP-B) in the lung specimens. No defect in SP-B which is characteristic of the congenital form of PAP was observed. The concentration of surfactant protein A (SP-A) in bronchial alveolar lavage (BAL) fluid was elevated in patient 1 suggesting the BAL concentration of SP-A may be a clue to the diagnosis of this form of PAP. Conclusion The accumulation of surfactant protein A in two siblings with an infantile form of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis could be a clue to the diagnosis.

Notes: The Mulliken electron population analysis has been a standard feature of computer output from the quantum mechanical molecular calculation. An extension of the original analysis is proposed here. It produces a point-charge model of a molecule that retains the same electric dipole moment as calculated with the molecular wave function. The analysis offers visually more interesting information than the original Mulliken analysis. The extension can be made easily by extracting and printing out some additional numerical data usually once computed but discarded after being processed in molecular calculations.

Notes: Skin care cosmetics and emulsions are related closely. The recent emulsion technology has advanced the quality of cosmetics, and cosmetics technology has advanced the study of emulsion. Therefore, cosmetic or emulsion researchers including the author were able to develop highly functional cosmetics by studying the chemical structure of oils and the form of emulsions which are both main factors for emulsion. As for the chemical structure of oils, a study has shown that a high polar oil with unique properties was synthesized, and applied to make-up remover. This study was worthy of notice to connect the properties of the oil and emulsion with the organic conceptual diagram. As for the form of emulsion, it was reported that multiple type emulsion stabilized active ingredients and helped to permeate the skin markedly and employing a high-pressure homogenizer brought even higher efficiency.
