Notes: A novel process for the direct laser writing of thin-film high Tc patterns is demonstrated. The process consists of deposition of a high quality film (308 nm laser ablation from a YBa2Cu3Ox target with a 750 °C substrate temperature and a 150 mTorr O2 ambient), annealing in an inert atmosphere (Ar at 400 °C for 5–20 min) to reduce the oxygen content and depress or eliminate the superconducting transition temperature, and direct-write laser heating (1.06 μm at ≈0.5 kW/cm2 for ≈5 min) in an oxygen atmosphere at ≈590 Torr to selectively regenerate the high Tc material. rf eddy current and four-point resistivity probe results confirm this process for both SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates. Scanning electron micrographs indicate that this is a very mild processing sequence with no observable changes in film morphology.

Notes: : Ten patients with fully treated pauchibacillary leprosy, mainly tuberculoid, had asymptomatic nodules present along the peripheral nerves that persisted even after the skin lesions had completely subsided and treatment was stopped. Histopathology of the nodules revealed no signs of activity of the disease. The evolution, follow-up care, and significance of these nodules are discussed.

Notes: Two leprosy patients with neuritis caused by giant abscesses involving almost the entire ulnar nerve are described. One patient, who also had skin lesions, was diagnosed histopathologically as having borderline tuberculoid leprosy both on skin and nerve biopsy, and the other, with only nerve involvement, belonged to the pure neuritic group. The lepromin test was strongly positive (with a vesicular reaction in one patient) and lymphocyte transformation to Mycobacterium leprae antigen was raised. These lesions can be easily mistaken for a peripheral nerve tumour in places where leprosy is uncommon. A brief account of the management of nerve abscess in leprosy is given.

Notes: Abstract Chromosomal RNA synthesis of the three heat shock puffs 87A, 87C and 93D examined in trisomic3L (T3L) and trisomic2L (T2L) strains ofDrosophila melanogaster and compared with that of Oregon R + and compound stocks of the3rd [C(3L) VGI ru st; F(3R) VDI e s/F(3R) VDI es] and2nd [C(2L) SHI+; F(2R) bw] chromosomes. The activity at two different temperatures (22° and 37° C) was monitored by [3H]uridine autoradiography. The results that while in the controlT3L andT2L nuclei (22° C), the 93D puff shows a higher level of transcriptional activity than in the Oregon R+ or compound stocks used as controls, inT3L andT2L nuclei from heat-shocked sets (37° C), 93D does not show further induction compared with heatshocked controls, and the 87C puff is 2.8 times more active than the 87A puff. These results suggest that there may be a direct functional and/or regulatory relationship between the activity of 93D and certain sequence specific activity of 87C, and that an optimum level of activity delimits the activity of the heat shock puff 93D inD. melanogaster.

Notes: Abstract Leprosy patients undergoing phase II trials in two hospitals of New Delhi, India, were HLA typed to see the association of HLA with differential responsiveness toMycobacterium w vaccine. The vaccine comprises an atypical, nonpathogenic mycobacterium,Mycobacterium w, which has cross-reactive antigens withM. leprae. Multibacillary patients who are lepromin negative are vaccinated at an interval of 3 months. Considerable improvement is evident in the patients in terms of a decline in bacterial indices and histopathological and immunological upgrading. But all the patients do not respond to the vaccine in the same manner; some are slow responders, while others are good responders. HLA-A28 and DQw3 (DQw8+9) were found to be associated with slow responsiveness, while DQw1 and DQw7 were found to be associated with a more rapid responsiveness to theM. w vaccine. However, these associations were not significant afterP correction for the number of antigens tested for each locus except for HLA-DQw3 (DQw8 and DQw9) and DQw7. DQw7, a new defined split of HLA-DQw3, seems to be associated with the responsiveness toM. w vaccine.

Notes: Abstract The microstructures of polycrystalline nickel, deformed in compression at temperatures of 1000–1500 K at high pressure (1500 MPa) and at ambient (0.1 MPa) pressure, were compared. Dynamic recrystallization and strain-induced grain growth were observed to occur during creep tests at both pressure levels. Our experimental results at ambient pressure are in good agreement with Sandstrom and Lagneborg's theory on dynamic recrystallization. However, high-pressure application considerably retarded recrystallization and grain-growth kinetics. This behaviour was attributed to an increase in the activation energy for grainboundary migration at high pressure.

Notes: Abstract The tensile behaviour of mechanically alloyed (dispersion strengthened) IN90211 was characterized at strain rates between 0.0001 and 340 sec−1 at temperatures between 425 and 475 ° C, At strain rates above 0.1 sec−1, superplastic elongations were obtained (maximum elongation 525% at 475 ° C, 2.5sec−1. Large elongations were possible due to the lack of cavitation, even though the strain-rate sensitivity was lower (m ≈ 0.25) than usually found in superplasticity. Cavitation was precluded by the morphology of the platelet-shaped grains in which low-angle subgrain boundaries were predominantly perpendicular to the tensile axis. Grain-boundary sliding was observed along high-angle grain boundaries which were generally parallel to the tensile axis. At the high homologous testing temperatures (0.76 to 0.81), concurrent grain-boundary sliding and lattice slip was made possible by the rapid lattice diffusivity and easy climb of lattice dislocations over dispersions in the matrix and grain boundaries.

Notes: Abstract Fine-grained AA7475 aluminium alloy sheets were produced in this study by a thermomechanical treatment involving solution anneal, overageing, rolling and recrystallization steps. It has been found that the cooling rate after the intermediate overageing treatment should be fast to obtain the finest grain size. The fast cooling rate ensured the presence of relatively large particles of MgZn2 and some supersaturation prior to cold rolling. Generally, the final grain structure was heterogeneous, with bands of fine grains lying parallel to the rolling direction. In material rapidly cooled after overageing, bands of fine grains were also observed in the transverse direction and these bands were associated with shear bands formed during rolling. The fine-grained AA7475 alloy sheets with an average grain size of about 9 μm showed large tensile elongations of about 800% when deformed at 516 °C and with an initial strain rate of 5×10−4s−1.

Notes: Thermal behavior of brominated atactic polypropylene (BAPP), obtained by thermal bromination of atactic polypropylene (APP), was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). It was found that the initial decomposition temperature (IDT) and char yield increase with the increase in bromine content while integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT) showed a decreasing trend. A comparative study of these value in inert and oxidative atmospheres has been made. DTA study shows that onset decomposition temperature (ODT) and glass transition temperature (Tg) increase with the increase in degree of bromination. The possible reasons for the occurring phenomena have been discussed.

Notes: Glycidyl methacrylate and N-vinyl pyrrolidone have been grafted onto natural rubber at 32°C using the simultaneous cobalt-60 irradiation technique. The natural rubber samples were swollen in the monomers for 24 h and thereafter subjected to gamma irradiation. The homopolymers formed in the graft copolymerization reactions and unreacted monomer were removed by solvent extraction using acetone and methanol for glycidyl methacrylate and N-vinyl pyrrolidone monomer, respectively. The influence of total dose and monomer concentration on the graft parameters was investigated. The dependence of the rate of grafting on the monomer concentration was found to be 0.93 and 0.80 for glycidyl methacrylate and N-vinyl pyrrolidone, respectively. DSC and TGA studies of the polymers were undertaken. Grafted copolymers based on glycidyl methacrylate were relatively less thermally stable compared with ungrafted natural rubber.
