    Notes: Magnetic compression of S-1 spheromak plasmas [Nucl. Fusion 22, 1407 (1982)] was performed to extend the investigation of confinement properties of the spheromak to plasmas with larger current density and higher plasma pressure than obtained before. Evolution of the magnetic configuration was mapped using internal-probe-based flux plots, and it was found that the plasma compression was approximately self-similar. The Taylor equilibrium state was maintained without flux conversion or relaxation phenomena. With a compression factor of up to 1.6, a significant increase of plasma pressure was observed. The peak electron temperature rose from approximately 40 eV before compression to about 100 eV, and the peak density increased somewhat less than the adiabaticity based scaling, which suggests the presence of an enhanced particle loss mechanism. In general, the electron's beta value was approximately constant during the compression; that is, ne0Te0∝B20. This result is consistent with the S-1 scaling obtained earlier without compression. The ion temperature measured by Doppler broadening of low Z impurity line radiation was observed to rise as high as 0.5 keV.

    Notes: Neutral density profiles are calculated for plasma and edge conditions consistent with those of the S-1 spheromak [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, 1984 (IAEA, Vienna, 1985), Vol. 2, p. 535]. Multiple generation charge exchange is the dominant transport mechanism for edge neutrals to the plasma center. Central neutral densities may be as high as 1%–5% of the electron density. The high-edge neutral population makes it possible to explain the value and scaling of resistivity in decaying spheromaks. Large neutral components also provide an ion energy-loss mechanism through charge exchange.

    Notes: The mechanism of the occurrence of natural antikeratin antibodies in human sera was studied using hybrid spleen cells obtained from experimentally naive or from immunized mice. Antikeratin antibodies were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 5·9–9·5% of the culture supcrnatants of fused spleen cells taken from naive mice. When mice were immunized with keratins, the number of supernatants containing antikeratin antibodies was increased to eight out of 51 (15.7%). When immunized with non-keratin materials such as activated human T cells, adult T-cell leukaemia cell lysates, and human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1), 16·7–20·8% of the supernatants were found to contain antikeratin antibodies by ELISA.The antikeratin antibodies in the supernatants showed cytoplasmic staining of keratinocytes in human as well as mouse skin by indirect immunofluorescence. The antibodies reacted with extracted human epidermal keratins by dot-blot and Western blot analysis. Most antikeratin antibodies in the supernatants did not show cross-reactivity with exogenous antigens used for immunization and vimentin-type intermediate-sized filaments.The findings demonsrate that B cells producing antikeratin antibodies are common in naive mice, and produce various type of antikeratin antibodies following specific activation with epidermal keratins and non-specific immunological stimuli.

    Notes: Summary We characterized the properties of herpes-type viruses which grew well in a Marek's disease lymphoblastoid cell line, MSB1-41C, inducing cytopathic effect characterized by the formation of syncytial giant cells. Examination of the infectious virus by field inversion gel electrophoresis revealed the presence of DNA of about 180 kbp in both the culture fluid and cell fractions of the infected MSB-41C cells. The DNA was found to consist of Marek's disease virus (MDV) serotype 2 (MDV2) and MDV serotype 1 (MDV1) DNA by Southern blot hybridization. The MDV1 DNA consisted of sequences mainly from the long inverted repeats including multiple copies of 132 bp direct tandem repeats. Molecular cloning of BamHI digests of the MDV2 DNA revealed a fragment of MDV1 DNA and MDV2 DNA fused together, indicating that the recombinant MDV2 DNA had been generated by genetic recombination with the latent MDV1 DNA.

    Notes: Summary Cone-driven external H1 horizontal cells (H1 HCs) in the cyprinid fish retina hyperpolarize in response to all visible lights, and their synaptic inputs have been widely believed to be excitatory. Recent experiments indicate, however, that short- and long-λ, (wavelength)-sensitive cone photoreceptors have different types of synaptic mechanisms; a conductance-decreasing, signreversing and short-λ-mediating type, and a more conventional conductance-increasing class of excitatory (sign-conserving) synapse transmitting mainly long-λ signals to H1 HCs. Here, a new set of evidence is presented for such spectrally segregated synaptic multiplicity, which also supports the notion that H1 HCs are actually color-opponent units where the depolarizing response component due to short-λ-sensitive cones is normally overshadowed by the dominant hyperpolarizing component ascribed to long-λ-mediating synaptic inputs. Application of dopamine to the retina preferentially enhanced the H1 HC responses to long-λ flashes, and also depolarized the resting membrane potential in the dark. The spectral response was also examined after applying APB (2-amino-4-phosphonobutyric acid), in the presence of dopamine included to avoid polysynaptic effects of APB. This treatment enhanced the H1 HC responses to short-λ stimuli and hyperpolarized the resting potential. These results are consistent with the suggestion that dopamine potentiates the conductance-increasing and long-λ-mediating excitatory transmitter action, whereas APB acts as an agonist at the receptor involved in the conductance-decreasing and short-λ-mediating transmitter action.

    Notes: Abstract An eye pointer was developed as a new line-of-sight displacement analyser. It analyses an observer's eye movements and superimposes their line of vision on a TV image which is the same as their view. A newly developed miniature colour field camera and very compact eye-movement sensors are attached to a translucent reinforced plastic goggle affording a wide view and excellent safety. A small case is provided for the eye-movement detecting circuit and the camera controller unit etc. Its weight is only 1·2 kg and one can easily participate in sports activities while wearing it. Eye-movement data are transmitted with the VHF video signal. The receiver, which analyses the eye movements and processes the TV image, is also compact and easy to carry. The calibration is automatic and completed within 1 min with a high degree of accuracy. By showing the tennis player's line of vision as an example, we were able to obtain good results with application in broadcasting programmes.
