Abstract The interaction between a pulsed laser beam and the surface of a carbon steel has been investigated. The variables of the irradiation were the power intensity of the laser beam and the number of pulses. At the area of impact of the incoming laser beam concentric ripples were observed. The number of ripples and their displacement was found to be dependent on both the above parameters. No transformation products, such as martensite or bainite, or any evidence of a heat affected zone have been observed at the immediate vicinity of the impact area.
