    Notes: Detailed analytical transmission electron microscopy investigations were performed on a well-known diffusion barrier system for very-large-scale integration metallization. It will be demonstrated that interfacial reactions are of great importance for the barrier mechanism. Both Ti and TiN act as diffusion barrier for the semiconductor and the metallization, respectively. For an aluminum-based metallization, TiN has a "spongelike'' function due to its ability to absorb several amounts of aluminum at elevated temperatures and therefore inhibits diffusion towards the substrate. Ti acts for silicon as a compound forming barrier according to Nicolet's classification [in Tungsten and Other Refractory Metals for Very Large Scale Integration Applications II, edited by E. K. Broadbent (Materials Research Society, Pittsburgh, 1987); pp. 19–26].

    Notes: This letter critically discusses the topographical information obtained by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) on surfaces with a mesoscopic roughness, i.e., in the range of some nm's. In a foregoing publication [J. Appl. Phys. 67, 1156 (1990)], we already treated the evaluation of constant current images based on the knowledge of the real surface and the shape of the tunneling tip ("tip shape limited resolution''). Now we deal with the invers problem: the reconstruction of the real surface topography based on the corresponding STM image and the tip shape, using a simple, straightforward formalism.

    Notes: This paper discusses the reliability of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images of mesoscopically rough surfaces. The specific structure of these images represents a convolution between the real surface topography and the shape of the tip. In order to interpret these images quantitatively, the line scans of steep and high steps can be used to obtain an image of the tip itself. This image shows tip radii ranging typically from 5 to 15 nm and cone angles of about 30° over a length of 80 nm, and can in turn be used to recognize the limits of STM resolution on a rough surface: High-resolution transmission electron microscopy cross-section images of Au island films on a Au-Nb double layer are convoluted with the experimentally observed tip shape; the resulting line scans correspond very well with STM graphs of the same samples. Finally an overall criterion for the resolution of the STM on such surfaces is proposed.

    Notes: Summary Hemodialysis treatment is associated with activation of neutrophil granulocytes. Pentoxifylline has been shown to inhibit neutrophil activation in vitro and in vivo. We investigated the effect of pentoxifylline on leukocyte and platelet counts and on plasma levels of extracellularly released neutrophil elastase and lactoferrin during a four-hour hemodialysis treatment. Eight patients received 400 mg of pentoxifylline or placebo orally twice a day over 14 days and an additional dose of 400 mg of pentoxifylline intravenously during hemodialysis. Each subject served as his own control in a randomized, double-blind, cross-over study. Combined oral and intravenous treatment with pentoxifylline prevented neither leukopenia nor neutrophil degranulation during the time interval studied. Elastase plasma levels paralleled the drop in leucocyte counts and thereafter increased similarly in both groups. Lactoferrin plasma levels exhibited less increase in the treated group; however, this effect was not statistically significant. This may be due to the small number of cases studied and to difficulties in reaching effective plasma levels without side effects.

    Notes: Abstract Aqueous solutions of blockcopolymers, consisting of a polyoxypropyleneblock (POP) with a polyoxyethylene-block (POE) at each side, were studied using surface and interfacial tension measurements, static and dynamic light scattering and smallangle neutron scattering techniques, electric birefringence, rheological and DSC-measurements. The compounds were commercial samples and had an approximate average composition EO20PO70EO20, EO18PO58EO18, and EO106PO69EO106. All three compounds formed micelles above a critical concentration. The size of the micellar core is determined by the length of the hydrophobic poly-propyleneoxide block. The transfer energy of a propyleneoxide unit from the aqueous to the micellar phase is about 0.3 kT at room temperature and hence a quarter of the corresponding value for a CH2-group. The aggregation number of the micelles increases strongly with increasing temperature while the hydrodynamic radius remains constant in first approximation. The smallangle neutron scattering (SANS) data show at higher concentrations a strong correlation peak. Both the SANS- and the light-scattering data can be interpreted on the basis of the theory of hard sphere particles. Solutions with a volume fraction beyond about 0.2 gellifie when the temperature is raised above a characteristic value that is at the lowest concentrations slightly above room temperature, shift to lower values with increasing concentrations. Below this gelation temperature DSC-measurements show a phase transition with enthalpies between 40J/g and 80J/g, which is probably due to the dehydration of the PO-groups; this transition can also be observed at low concentrations where no gelation takes place. The position of the correlation peak of the SANS-data is not affected by the gel formation. Some samples, however, show clear evidence of long-range order and seem therefore to consist of cubic liquid crystalline phases. The shear moduli of the gels can qualitatively be understood on the basis of hard sphere models.

    Notes: Abstract The phase diagram of the ternary surfactant system which consists of dimethyltetradecylaminoxide, hydrocarbon, and water contains a highly elastic gel phase which borders on the micellarL 1-phase. This gel phase is transparent, optically isotropic, and shows the ringing phenomena when it is excited to mechanical vibrations. From SANS and light-scattering measurements it is shown that this phase consists of the same spherical microemulsion droplets which are present in the adjacent micellar solution. Even in the micellar solution the droplets are fairly monodisperse and in the SANS scattering functions a second scattering maximum was observed. Both the light scattering and SANS data can be described quantitatively on the basis of hard sphere interactions between the particles. Furthermore, it is shown that elasticity and shear modulus of the gel phase, which were determined experimentally, correlate with the compressibility modulus as calculated from the scattering data. The elasticity modulus and hence the osmotic compressibility modulus are related to the Laplace pressure inside the globules. For the calculation of this pressure it is possible to take the interfacial tension, which is obtained from a dilute micellar solution against the hydrocarbon which is used for the system. The radius of the particles and the hydrocarbon content in the system can be increased when some of the dimethyltetradecylaminoxide is replaced by dimethyltetradecylphosphinoxide.
