Notes: First, an overview of the present state of art of imaging of three-dimensional particle (or damage) distributions in the field of ion implantation is given. Usually, the direct measurement of three-dimensional distributions in the field of ion implantation is restricted to cases when the impinging ion beam diameter is small against the size of the corresponding distributions, i.e., to ion energies above typically 100 MeV and to microbeams of a few μm diameter. To gain information also for lower ion energies without the restriction in the beam diameter, a modified tomographic reconstruction technique has been developed recently by us and is described here in detail. Three-dimensional distributions are reconstructed from a number of one-dimensional depth profiles, implanted under various angles. Competing algorithms for the solution are discussed. For the mathematical technique chosen, some consistency tests are presented. Good accuracy of a sufficient number of input profiles is vital for the quality of the three-dimensional reconstruction

Notes: For the heavy ion accelerator Unilac Penning ionization gauge (PIG) ion sources are used to deliver multiply charged ions (〈10+) of nearly any element of the periodic table. Typical operational ion currents are given. In the future electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources will play a dominant role for the Unilac. The development of a new 14-GHz ECR ion source for very high charge states (〈28+ ) was carried out by Centre d'Études Nucléaires de Grenoble at Grenoble for a new Unilac injector. For the new heavy ion synchrotron Schwen Ionen synchrotron higher ion currents than those available from the PIG sources are required. The high current source CHORDIS was developed at Gesellschaft für schwerionenforschung (GSI) to deliver singly charged ions in the 10–100 mA range. In comparison to CHORDIS a Metal vapor vacuum arc ion source is being studied at GSI in cooperation with Lawrence Berkeley Lab. Typical operation conditions and ion yields are given for the different ion sources.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Unter 600 tödlichen Verkehrsunfällen beobachteten wir Schädelbasiscondylenverletzungen bei 10 Zweiradfahrern, 12 Pkw-Fahrern und 3 Fußgängern.

Notes: Abstract Pyloric atresia is a very rare malformation. Up to 1987, 140 cases of complete pyloric obstruction had been described in the available medical literature [9]. Four patients with congenital pyloric atresia are presented. On the basis of our own cases and those described in the literature, clinical features, diagnostic procedures, and therapy are summarized and discussed. The typical radiological and clinical signs should in most cases lead to the correct diagnosis.

Notes: Summary Whereas tissue factor (TF), a 47 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein, is constitutively present in certain tissues such as epithelial tissue, brain, and placenta, it is normally not expressed by cells within the vasculature. However, inflammatory mediators including bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) can stimulate the expression of cell surface procoagulant activity (PCA) on monocytes. In our present study the kinetics (over 24 h) of molecular TF expression on LPS-stimulated monocytes analyzed by flow cytometry corresponds closely to functional PCA of human mononuclear blood cells (MBC). Both PCA and TF expression on monocytes were rapid events reaching their maximum after about 6 h of stimulation. At this time approximately 70–80% of monocytes had also achieved maximum anti-TF MAb receptor density. For certain analytical applications, monitoring of molecular TF expression on monocytes by flow cytometry using anti-TF MAb is favorable because there is no influence by PCA inhibitors.

Notes: Summary Frequency representation in the auditory brainstem nuclei of the fattailed gerbil (Pachyuromys duprasi) was studied by focal iontophoretic HRP injections into the cochlear nucleus at physiologically characterized positions. Tuning curves of cochlear nucleus neurons were determined by extracellular recording of multi-unit spike activity prior to HRP application. Neurons with characteristic frequencies of 0.55 to 17.5 kHz were recorded. Anterograde labeling of synaptic terminal fields demonstrated a tonotopic arrangement of frequencies within the cochlear nucleus subdivisions and the lateral and medial superior olivary nuclei. In all nuclei investigated terminal fields were arranged in isofrequency planes. In the subdivisions of the cochlear nucleus and in the lateral superior olive the frequency range from 0.55 to 17.5 kHz was represented. In the medial superior olive on the other hand, frequency representation was restricted to frequencies below 3.5 kHz. Quantitative evaluation of tonotopy showed that the frequency representation in the anteroventral and posteroventral cochlear nucleus and lateral superior olive were very similar. The amount of tissue-volume processing one octave varied within the hearing range. The frequency range of highest auditory sensitivity (between 1 and 5 kHz) occupied up to 25% nuclear tissue/octave, while at the upper and lower limits of the hearing range, frequencies were represented by a ratio of 10–15% nuclear tissue/octave. The frequency representation pattern in these brainstem nuclei reflected exactly the frequency place map of the cochlea.

Notes: Summary The expression of the synapsin I gene was studied during postnatal development of the rat retina at the mRNA and protein levels. In situ hybridization histochemistry showed that synapsin I mRNA was expressed already in nerve cells in the ganglion cell layer of the neonatal retina, while it appeared in neurons of the inner nuclear layer from postnatal day 4 onward. Maximal expression of synapsin I mRNA was observed at P12 in ganglion cells and in neurons of the inner nuclear layer followed by moderate expression in the adult. At the protein level a shift of synapsin I appearance was observed from cytoplasmic to terminal localization during retinal development by immunohistochemistry. In early stages (P4 and P8), synapsin I was seen in neurons of the ganglion cell layer and in neurons of the developing inner nuclear layer as well as in the developing inner plexiform layer. In the developing outer plexiform layer synapsin I was localized only in horizontal cells and in their processes. Its early appearance at P4 indicated the early maturation of this cell type. A shift and strong increase of labelling to the plexiform layers at P12 indicated the localization of synapsin I in synaptic terminals. The inner plexiform layer exhibited a characteristic stratified pattern. Photoreceptor cells never exhibited synapsin I mRNA or synapsin I protein throughout development.

Notes: Abstract Using crossed beams of metastable rare gas atoms Rg*(ms3 P 2,3 P 0) (Rg=Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe) and ground state sodium atoms Na(3s 2 S 1/2), we have measured the energy spectra of electrons released in the respective Penning ionization processes at thermal collision energies. For Rg*(3 P 2)+Na(3s), the spectra are quite similar for the different rare gases, both in width and shape; they reflect attractive interactions in the entrance channel with well depthsD* e [meV] decreasing slowly from Rg=Ne to Xe as follows: 676(18); 602(23); 565(26); 555(30). For Rg*(3 P 0)+Na(3s), the spectra vary strongly with the rare gas, indicating a change in the character of the interaction from van der Waals type attraction (Ne) to chemical binding for Kr and Xe with well depthsD* e [meV] of: 51(19); 107(25); 432(30); 530(50). These findings are explained through model calculations of the respective potential curves, in which the exchange and the spin orbit interaction in the excited rare gas and the molecular interaction between the two valences-electrons in terms of suitably chosen singlet and triplet potentials are taken into account. These calculations also explain qualitatively the experimental finding that the ratiosq 2/q 0 of the ionization cross sections for Rg*(3 P 2)+Na and Rg*(3 P 0)+Na vary strongly with the rare gas from Ne to Xe as follows: 15.8(3.2); 2.6(4); 1.4(2); 1.6(4).
