Notes: Superconducting thin films of Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4−y (NCCO) were grown at 720–820 °C by pulsed laser deposition in N2O atmosphere. The reduction subsequent to the deposition was found to be critical, and was studied systematically for various temperature, atmosphere, and duration. An ac susceptibility technique was used to stringently characterize the film quality. Very high quality films were made with optimized reduction conditions which showed a Tc(R=0) of 22.4 K, with a transition width of 0.2 K and a Jc (4.2 K) of 8×105/cm2 at zero field. Microwave surface resistance Rs was measured at 9.6 GHz and a value of ∼3 mΩ was obtained at 4.2 K in a 5000 A(ring) thick NCCO film.

Notes: A multilayer high Tc superconducting field-effect transistor-like structure was made from ultrathin YBa2Cu3O7−x films. An epitaxially grown dielectric SrTiO3 insulation layer, which had a forward bias breakdown voltage of about 20 V, allowed an electric field induced change in the channel layer of 1.25×1013 carrier/cm2 per volt of the gate voltage. A significant modulation of the normal state and superconducting properties was observed in samples with YBa2Cu3O7−x channel layers of a few unit cells thick. By applying gate voltage of different polarities, Tc was both suppressed and enhanced by ∼1 K. The resistance was modulated by as much as 20% in the normal state and by over 1500% near the zero resistance temperature.

Notes: Thin films of Sr2AlTaO6 (SAT) and multilayers of YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO)/SAT have been grown by pulsed laser deposition on [001] LaAlO3 substrates. X-ray diffraction shows that SAT grows on [001] LaAlO3 with the c-axis oriented normal to the substrate plane. X-ray rocking curve and Rutherford backscattering channeling measurements on SAT films yield full width at half maximum of 〈0.3° and minimum backscattering yield χmin of 5%–7%, respectively, indicating good crystallinity. The real part of the dielectric constant εr is found to be ∼23–30, with ∼6×107 V/m static breakdown electric field. Both the dielectric constant and the static breakdown field show negligible temperature dependence between 10 and 300 K. A 100 nm×10 μm×50 μm YBCO film on SAT shows zero-field critical current density of ∼1.3×106 A/cm2 at 77 K, with a superconducting transition temperature Tc0 of ∼89.2 K.

Notes: We report a rare complication following transfusion of a large volume of blood in an adult patient. An electrophysiological disturbance of the cardiac cycle with prolongation of the QT interval developed, which was followed by recurrent episodes of torsade de pointes, a unique form of ventricular tachycardia. The most likely cause of this acquired long QT syndrome was hypomagnesaemia secondary to massive blood transfusion. Treatment with a magnesium infusion restored the QT interval to normal and temporary ventricular pacing prevented further ventricular arrhythmias.

Notes: The surface motion in a plane multilayered half-space has been considered. Layer matrices of SH and P-SV motions are written as sums of matrices. Using these it is seen that when shear wave velocity of a layer, say the lth, is greater than the phase velocity, and layer thickness is large compared to wavelength, the surface motion can be written with the lth layer as the terminating half-space. Thus in computation of surface motion, the depth of the terminating half-space in a given structure depends on phase velocity and frequency. Further, if the source is below the terminating half-space, it has no contribution to surface motion at that phase velocity and frequency for which the terminating half-space has been obtained. This layer reduction formulation is applied in the generation of synthetic seismograms. As this generation requires computation over large ranges of phase velocity and frequency, the present method is important in avoiding excess computation time for unnecessary layers and in avoiding overflow due to the above mentioned lth layer. The method is most useful in low phase velocity and high frequency ranges.

Notes: Summary The effects of some muscarinic M1 and M2 receptor agonists and antagonists on two dopamine-mediated behavioural paradigms, namely postswim grooming response and apormorphine-induced climbing behaviour, was investigated in mice. The M1 agonists and M2 receptor antagonists attenuated both paradigms, whereas the M1 receptor antagonists and M2 receptor agonists facilitated both behaviours. However, carbachol and physostigmine, exhibited a similar dose-dependent dual effect with the lower doses augmenting and the higher doses inhibiting both the behaviours, suggesting that the M2 agonist receptor specificity is lost on dose increment. The findings indicate that the central cholinergic muscarinic heteroreceptors, like the other muscarinic receptors, are functionally divisible into M1 and M2 receptor subtypes in their modulation of dopaminergic activity.

Notes: Abstract Densities and ultrasonic velocities in aqueous solutions of cis-K[Cr(ox)2(H2O)2], K3[Cr(ox)3] and KSSCOC2H5 and a mixed ligand complex K2[Cr(ox)2SSCOC2H5], where SSCOC2H5 is the ethylxanthate ligand, have been measured at 25, 35 and 45°C. Limiting partial molar volumes, partial molar adiabatic compressibilities and hydration numbers of the complex salts as well as of the ligand have been calculated. The implication of the findings are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Group velocities of fundamental mode Rayleigh and Love waves have been obtained across the central highlands in the northwestern part of the Indian peninsula and across the plateau region of the peninsula. Such data across the latter region were also obtained earlier and revealed model lithosphere IP11 for this region. Data of the two regions are similar and show that the lithospheric model IP11 continues from the plateau region to the central highlands. The model IP11 has been verified by comparing observed Love wave forms with synthetics ones.
