    Notes: Line-focus-beam (LFB) acoustic microscopy is applied to quantitative characterization of piezoelectric LiNbO3 crystals to demonstrate the usefulness of this new analytical technique. Experimental relations between chemical composition ratios of Li/Nb and leaky surface acoustic wave (LSAW) velocities for 128°YX LiNbO3 wafers are determined. LSAW velocity measurements are carried out for commercial wafers obtained from a series of crystal growths. Small changes of 0.092% are detected due to the compositional variation. It is estimated that the "effective'' congruent composition in the production line is 48.440 Li2O mol% with the density of 4647.4 kg/m3.

    Notes: The line-focus-beam acoustic microscope system is applied to investigate the elastic properties of LiTaO3. Elastic inhomogeneities are detected quantitatively as a significant variation of leaky surface acoustic wave (LSAW) velocities in X-112.2°Y LiTaO3 wafers. Large changes, about 2.5%, in LSAW velocities are observed in some wafers, which correspond to a difference between the velocities for single and multidomains. One of the causes is found to be in the poling process during wafer fabrication.

    Notes: Monoclonal antibodies against human Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Mn-SOD were used to stain frozen sections of normal and abnormal human skin. In normal human epidermis, the Cu, Zn-SOD antibody almost exclusively stained the basal cells. Mn-SOD antibody weakly stained the whole of the epidermis but more predominantly the basal cell layer. In psoriasis, Cu, Zn-SOD antibody mainly stained the basal cells of the lowest parts of the elongated rete ridges. Basal cells corresponding to the tip of the dermal papillae were weakly stained. Mn-SOD staining was considerably decreased in the psoriatic epidermis. In squamous cell carcinoma, staining with both Cu, Zn-SOD and Mn-SOD antibodies was decreased, and single cells positive for Cu, Zn-SOD were scattered throughout the tumour nests. In basal cell epithelioma, Cu, Zn-SOD staining was intense and diffusely distributed throughout the tumour nests, while Mn-SOD staining was absent.

    Notes: The ammo-terminal pro-sequence consisting of 77 amino acid residues is required to guide the folding of secreted subtilisin E, a serine protease, into active, mature enzyme (Ikemura et al., 1987). Furthermore, denatured subtilisin E can be folded to active enzyme in an intermolecular process with the aid of an exogenously added pro-subtilisin E, the active site of which was mutated (Zhu et al., 1989). In this report, we have synthesized the pro-peptide of 77 residues (corresponding to -1 to -77 in the sequence, where residue +1 is the N-terminal amino acid residue of the mature protein), and have found that it could intermolecularly complement the folding of denatured subtilisin E to active enzyme. Furthermore, we have found that the synthetic pro-peptide exhibits specific strong binding to the active mature enzyme by inhibiting it competitively at its active centre with an upper limit to a Ki of 5.4 × 10−7. In contrast, synthetic pro-peptides corresponding to -44 to -77, -1 to 64 and -1 to -43 inhibited the enzyme with Ki values weaker by two orders of magnitude. The results indicate that the sequence extending from -1 to -77 is essential for specificity of interaction, perhaps generating a conformation that accounts for both roles found hitherto, i.e. specific binding to the active centre, and guiding of the refolding to active enzyme. Thus these results suggest that the pro-peptide functions as an intermolecular chaperone.

    Notes: Abstract Ultrafast optical response in the films of poly(3-dodecylthiophene) (P3DT) and blue-and red-phase polydiacetylenes (PDA-4BCMU) has been investigated by femtosecond absorption and picosecond luminescence spectroscopies. Several nonlinear optical processes, i.e., hole burning, Raman gain, inverse Raman scattering, and induced-frequency shift, have been observed. The relaxation processes from photoexcited free excitons to self-trapped excitons (STEs) has been observed. The time constant is estimated as 140±40 fs in the blue-phase PDA-4BCMU and 100±50 fs in P3DT. The generated unthermalized STEs thermalize with the time constant of about 1 ps. The STEs in the blue-phase PDA-4BCMU decay exponentially with lifetime of 1.6±0.1 ps at 290 K and 2.1±0.2 ps at 10 K. The decay curves in the red-phase PDA-4BCMU and P3DT are not single exponential but can be fitted to biexponential functions with time constants of slightly shorter than 1 ps and about 5 ps. These two decay time constants correspond to relaxations to the ground state, respectively, from the free exciton and unthermalized STE and from the thermalized STE.
