Notes: An adnexal tumor on the scalp of a 74-year-old woman is described. Histologically, the tumor was composed of cystic structures showing typical trichilemmal keratinization. The tumor cells in the cyst walls often formed duct-like or squamous eddy-like structures and occasionally showed vacuolation or poromalike change. Ultrastructurally, some tumor cells showed differentiation either toward the acrosyringium or sebaceous cells. From these findings, the present tumor is considered to differentiate toward various parts of the hair follicle including infundibulo-isthmus epithelium, apocrine acrosyringium, and sebaceous cells.

Notes: Summary By transferring a semidwarf gene (sd-1) from Taichung Native 1 into a tall Japanese cultivar, Norin 29, through seven backcrosses, a semidwarf near-isogenic line SC-TN1 was obtained. The proteins of the embryo in Norin 29 and SC-TN1 were separated by two-dimensional electrophoresis. Most of the proteins showed the same electrophoretic pattern. However, it was found that there was a difference in the appearance of two basic glycoproteins designated as SRP-1 and SRP-2. These proteins exhibited the same molecular mass, but different isoelectric points. Hybridization results indicated that a single locus controls SRP-1 and SRP-2 with codominant alleles. The gene symbol Srp was given to this locus, with alleles Srp-1 and Srp-2 responsible for SRP-1 and SRP-2, respectively. Srp-2 was found in all of the semidwarf cultivars and lines having sd-1, except a tall cultivar Tsaiyuan-chung. This finding suggests that Srp-2 may be closely linked with sd-1. The amounts of these proteins markedly increased after water absorption of the seed, suggesting that these proteins may be related to the early development of the plant.

Notes: Summary Two semidwarfism-related proteins, SRP-1 and SRP-2, were detected as major spots in a long-culm rice cultivar, Norin 29 and its semidwarf near-isogenic line, SC-TN1, respectively, by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE). The testcross showed that SRP-1 and SRP-2 are controlled by codominant alleles, Srp-1 and Srp-2, respectively, at a single locus Srp. This locus was considered to be closely linked with the semidwarfing gene locus sd-1. SRP-1 and SRP-2 were separated by 2D-PAGE, electroblotted onto a polyvinylidene difluoride membrane, and sequenced by a gas-phase protein sequencer. The N-terminal amino acid sequences, however, could not be determined due to the blockage of the N-terminals of these proteins. After removal of the N-terminal residue with pyroglutamyl peptidase given to the membrane, the amino acid sequence in the N-terminal region was determined. The N-terminal and internal amino acid sequences of SRP-1 and SRP-2 were highly homologous with those of the glutelin α-subunits of seed endosperm storage protein, which were deduced by the cDNA sequences. In the seed endosperms of Norin 29 and SC-TN1, a total of eight glutelin α-subunits was identified by 2D-PAGE. The amino acid sequences in the N-terminal and internal regions of these proteins were determined. This experiment confirmed that SRP-1 and SRP-2 are almost identical in structure with the glutelin α5a- and α5b-subunits, respectively, which were identified in several organs such as endosperms, embryos, and leaves, unlike the other glutelin α-subunits.

Notes: Abstract We investigate the topological vacuum structure inSU(2) lattice gauge theory with Wilson fermions on 44 and 64 lattices at various values of the hopping parameter. We use an effective action given by the hopping parameter expansion up to the 6-th order. To check the reliability of this approximation we compare it with the outcomes of an exact algorithm on the smaller lattice. The topological charge is measured according to the geometric prescription of Phillips and Stone applied to Monte Carlo equilibrium configurations.

Notes: The biocompatibility of nine different materials, including positive and negative references, 4 polyurethane based and 3 latex based materials was investigated by (1) cytotoxic assay using V79 Chinese hamster cells, (2) the thickness of inflammatory layer at 3 and 7 days after intramuscular implantation test, and (3) the course of the blood flow in tissue reaction around subcutaneously implanted materials using Laser Doppler Flowmetry (LDF) over 14 days following implantation. In addition, for some materials, different modes of sterilization were compared. Although the three methods explore different reactive systems, the material ranking obtained was highly similar for the three methods, suggesting a relative accuracy between them. For one latex however, an absence of cytotoxic effect in culture and a highly intense response by LDF investigation of the same order of magnitude as for the positive reference implant suggest that bioincompatibility may result from the material itself and cannot be exclusively investigated by the leaching of toxic components.
