Notes: Summary We have recorded the direction of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) elicited by moving plaid patterns in order to dissociate the pathways that mediate horizontal OKN. The plaids used comprised two drifting sinusoidal gratings arranged such that their individual directions of drift were very different from the direction of coherent motion of the overall pattern. The direction of OKN with binocular viewing was close to the mean of the component directions, suggesting a dominant influence of cortical visual neurons that respond to oriented one-dimensional components of the image. But the direction of OKN was consistently shifted slightly towards the direction of motion of the overall pattern, suggesting a secondary influence responsive to pattern direction. OKN recordings obtained during monocular viewing suggest that this secondary influence reflects the direct retinal pathway to the brainstem structures mediating OKN.

Notes: Summary Intravenous infusion of the nucleoside adenosine stimulates respiration, probably at least partly by an action in the carotid bodies, and also potentiates the ventilatory response to hypoxia, suggesting that it might be involved in the control of breathing. Whether the effects of adenosine occur at concentrations likely to be achieved in vivo is unknown and was investigated in 7 patients with arterial catheters inserted for diagnostic purposes. During intravenous infusion of adenosine (Maximum dose per min: mean 130 μg kg−1) mean minute ventilation increased from 5.5 to 10.9 l min−1 while mean plasma adenosine concentration in the aortic arch increased from 0.07 to 1.2 μM. In 3 patients ventilation first increased without a detectable increase in aortic adenosine concentration, suggesting a possible intra-pulmonary effect of adenosine, although increased concentrations were apparent at higher doses. Micromolar concentrations of adenosine are probably achieved in vivo in tissues during hypoxia. The present results show that at such concentrations adenosine stimulates respiration and are consistent with the suggestion that adenosine release may mediate or modulate the ventilatory response to hypoxia. A possible intra-pulmonary effect of adenosine merits further study.

Notes: Summary Interstitial cytogenetic deletions involving the paternally derived chromosome 15q11–13 have been described in patients with the Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). We report a child with PWS and a de novo unbalanced karyotype −45,XY,−9,−15,+der(9)t(9;15)(q34;q13). Molecular studies with the DNA probe pML34 confirmed that only a single Prader Willi critical region (PWCR: 15q11.2-q12) copy was present. Hybridisation of patient and parental DNA with the multi-allelic probe CMW1, which maps to pter-15q13, showed that the chromosome involved in the translocation was paternal in origin. This is the first example of a paternally-derived PWCR allele loss caused by an unbalanced translocation that has arisen de novo.

Notes: Abstract Improvements to the conventional ratio-of-uniforms method for random variate generation are proposed. A generalized radio-of-uniforms method is introduced, and it is demonstrated that relocation of the required density via the mode can greatly improve the computational efficiency of the method. We describe a multivariate version of the basic method and summarize a general strategy for efficient ratio-of-uniforms generation. Illustrative examples are given.

Notes: Summary The run-down and closure of psychiatric hospitals can be stressful for both staff and patients. Interviews with approximately 50% of over 100 long-stay psychiatric patients during an 18 month period preceeding a hospital closure show them to be generally ill-informed as to reasons for closure and future plans for their care. However, repeat measures of behavioural functioning (CAPE and REHAB) during this running-down period show no significant changes in patients' behaviour.

Notes: Abstract The mechanical properties of wheat starch and the effects of plasticizers upon them are studied in flexure at 293 K. For compositions low in water and glucose the material is glassy, with a flexural modulus between 0.7 and 5.0 GPa. The addition of water and glucose to wheat starch plasticizes the material through its glass transition into a rubbery state. The flexural moduli of the rubbery samples are in the range 50 to 200 MPa, which is indicative of a partially crystalline polymer. For starch-water mixtures the glass transition occur in the water content range 18 to 20%. The addition of glucose progressively shifts the glass transition to lower water contents. At strains below 0.04 brittle failure is only observed in the glassy samples. The surface morphology of the fractured samples shows features typical of pure synthetic glassy polymers.
