Notes: The point groups which have C2h as a subgroup are frequently observed in crystal data. A random-generation model of point groups gives a possible reason for the statistical distribution among the point groups in the class of crystals containing elements and alloys. By the addition of possible symmetry operations to point group C2h, new point groups of higher symmetry can be generated. The computer simulation of the random-generation model seems to explain the higher frequencies of occurrence of Oh and D6h, the lower frequencies of C4h and C6h and the moderately high frequencies of the remaining five point groups which have C2h as a subgroup.

Notes: Summary Superoxide anion (O2 −) production and expression of cytochrome b558 by neutrophils were determined in 20 patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). The reduction of O2 − production was noted in eight of the 20 patients and an increase was noted in four patients when neutrophils were stimulated byn-formylmethionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (FMLP), while a low level of O2 − production was found in 11 and an increase in six MDS patients when they were stimulated by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). Among them, seven patients showed a decrease and four an increase in O2 − production on stimulation with either FMLP or PMA. Expression of cytochrome b 558 was found to be at low levels in patients who had neutrophils showing decreased O2 − production when stimulated with FMLP, indicating that decreased expression of cytochrome b558 might contribute to the impairment of O2 − production in some MDS patients. In this study, no significant differences in O2 − production were noted among subtypes of MDS; however, the patients who had received prednisolone showed lower levels of O2 − production than those who had not received prednisolone. Patients manifesting episodes of infection had reduced levels of O2 − production compared with those without infection. Furthermore, the fact that one patient who exhibited a marked reduction in neutrophil counts together with reduced O2 − production died of fatal infection, suggests that the determination of O2 − production, in combination with hematological features, may be of some help in predicting severe infection.

Notes: Abstract The clinical usefulness of an auxiliary pad-weighing test to supplement the 60-min pad-weighing test, which has been recommended by the International Continence Society, and the patient's impression about the amount of urine loss are reported. Our use of the 60-min test revealed that 134 (53%) of 253 patients lost more than 2.1 g/h of urine and 119 (47%) lost less than 2.0 g/h. Our auxiliary test was indicated in 153 patients who lost urine of less than 5.0 g/h. This test involved jumping 20 times with legs apart and rope-skipping 60 times. The use of this additional test increased the detection rate of urinary incontinence (more than 2.1 g/h) from 53% (134/253) to 75% (191/253). The patients' subjective impression was in accordance with the objective amount of urine loss in approximately half the cases. However, those patients whose leakage was less than 10.0 g/h claimed more often than other groups that their loss was less than usual. On the other hand, the patients with more than 10.1 g/h, tended to describe their loss as being overestimated.
